Kindle Fire HD 7" runs very slowly after rooting

I recently rooted my Kindle Fire HD and it now runs very slowly. It was mentioned in the rooting instructions I was following that this would happen during the rooting process. I am wondering if this is a permanent consequence of rooting or if it is fixable. If it is something I can fix could you tell me how. Thanks for the help!

Here are the steps I followed:

  1. Download Root MANY ANDROID! to your desktop. Extract to your desktop. This package includes updated adb daemons.

  2. Download Qemu automated root to your desktop. Extract to your desktop. This package includes updated adb daemons.

NOTE WINDOWS 7 USERS: You need to open a command prompt "as Administrator" when running the above utility batch files RunMe.bat and RootQemu.bat - otherwise Windows will respond with "Permission Denied".

  3. Root Step 1: Run RunMe.bat from Root MANY ANDROID!. Choose option 1 Run Normal Method and ignore errors. Pay attention, you will need to answer "Restore" a dialogue box on the Kindle. Click on Restore. When the program has completed, the Kindle will Reboot.

  4. Root Step 2: When the Kindle reboots it will react VERY slowly, this is normal - leave it alone. Immediatly proceed to Step 3.

  5. Root Step 3: Run RootQemu.bat from Qemu automated root. Follow the instructions Step-by-Step allowing Windows to re-detect the Kindle between reboots (about 2 minutes). Let this utility complete to the end.

  6. Root Step 4: Click on Superuser.apk under the Apps tab.

Android Remote Desktop thru Wifi Only

I need a remote desktop solution, where it doesn't need an internet connection and I could see the desktop. So:

  • TeamViewer is not an option as it needs an Internet connection

  • Unified Remote is not an option as I cannot see my desktop

  • Same as Gmote

Any suggestions?

Answer

  1. Install Connectify on your PC, then open it (doesn't require net connection)

  2. Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network created by Connectify

  3. Use a Remote Desktop app to connect to your PC's IP address

Rooting Asus memo pad HD 7

Can any one show me a tutorial that how can I root my Asus memo pad hd7 ? Thanks in advance !

Answer

Please read the main How do I root my Android device from this site.

This is a blog on rooting the device and installing gApps on the device (if necessary).

This is the XDA thread on the root apk this should be a one click rooting process.

This is a recovery / ROM for the device

As always the disclaimer to this applies:

Rooting your phone may void your carrier and manufacturer warranty. You accept all responsibility if you brick your device. If you are ever in doubt STOP! This is not something to take lightly.

Read this also as it relates to the risk of rooting a device.

And once more I have to emphasise: ALWAYS backup everything, all the time. Then back it up again.

wi fi - Is 150 MB / month enough for limited use?

I've been thinking about getting a pre-owned Samsung Fascinate from Verizon for $40. I can't afford a $30/month unlimited data plan, but I was considering the $15/month 150MB data plan.

I'm planning on using it primarily as a phone/PMP, without heavy use of internet-related features. Most of my data usage will probably come from these things:

  • Downloading apps

  • Occassionally checking weather, maps, etc.

  • Texting through Google Voice. I plan all cancelling my texting plan and moving all my texting activities to Google Voice. I only use around ~300 texts (sent and received) per month.

Is it reasonable to expect these activities to remain within 150MB/month? On a related note, I am usually on my university's campus, which has wi-fi. Can I use the wi-fi network to avoid suffering data charges?

Update: Verizon ran a promotion this weekend. For upgrading to a smartphone with unlimited data plan, you got a $10/month credit for the next 24 months. So the $30/unlimited data plan effectively becomes $20/unlimited, and I went with that instead of the $15/150MB plan.

Answer

Yes. I agree with everything that Bryan has said but want to add...

You can use an app like Phone Usage that helps you monitor your network traffic. The Pro version ($2.35) also allows you to set data limits that will send you a notification if you go over. So you could set it to 125 MB and you'd know when you are getting close and you can throttle down your usage. Verizon has a 30 day return policy (although I think they are changing it to 15 days) so you can monitor your traffic and if you find that you are using waaay too much you can always cancel and go back to what ever you had before.

Another useful app (if you've rooted your device) if DroidWall which lets you set which apps can access your 3G connection. This would be useful if you identify that an app that requires background sync and uses a lot of data. It would also be good if you are getting close to you 150 MB limit and want to lock down your data usage.

Finally, many apps let you set a wifi only rule. For example BeyondPod has a setting in the apps that says "Only download podcasts when on Wifi" but if you really want to take control of your phone you can download Tasker and set an almost unlimited set of rules for how your phone operates.

rooting - What's next if Super One Click fails?

Possible Duplicate:

How do I root my Kindle Fire?

I want root, but not enough to reflash or do anything that has a significant chance of harming the phone. In the past I've always used Super One Click, but I've found the Kindle fire can't be rooted Super One Click (though it has specific instructions to root) and neither can my Motorola Electrify after the latest update.

Is there anything to try after Super One Click? It's an amazing catch-all solution but I realized I have never found another solution that doesn't require carrier and device specific roms, recovery mode and lots of other scary things.

Answer

The kindle fire was just recently updated and the update removed root from the device, and it broke the Super One Click root method used. Once another root method is found (it may have been already) the developer of Super One Click will most likely update the application to support the Kindle Fire again.

Here is an article from Engadget talking about the update.

Just when you thought it was safe to root your Kindle Fire with a single click, Amazon has clamped down on homebrewing enthusiasts. The company has begun pushing out an update for the $199 tablet that breaks the root, disabling the SuperOneClick utility in the process. If you've rooted your tablet and are still running a version of the Amazon-flavored Gingerbread, you're susceptible to the update any time you're connected to a WiFi network. However, if you've already made the leap to another version of Android, such as CM7, you can bypass this and any future software updates. There are some improvements with 6.2.1 though, as smoother scrolling, password protected WiFi use and the ability to remove recently used items from the home screen carousel are among the upgrades. If you're looking to read up on the issue before taking action, roll up your sleeves and hit the links below.

XDA-Developers Topic

From that thread, if you modify the hosts file and put the amazon update server to point to localhost (127.0.0.1) you will not receive the update, but If you cannot use Super One Click, it sounds like it is too late for you. You seem to already have the update.

Steps to disable the Kindle Automatic Silent Update:

  1. Modify /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 s3.amazonaws.com

  2. Disable OTASilentInstall
Use an app like Titanium Backup and Freeze the OTASilentInstall apk

  3. Rename OTASilentInstall (Optional)
Another option is to use a tool like RootExplorer and rename OTASilentInstall.apk to OTASilentInstall.bak.

As for your Electrify, I found some steps to root but I don't have the device so I do not know if they still work.

  1. Turn on USB Debugging in Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging - check the box.

  2. From the market download and install the Superuser App to your phone. You may be asked to update binaries but you can't till you're rooted. It's OK as is.

  3. Download and install the drivers to your PC from the link in step 9 below.

  4. Download both the ADB package and the torpedo root file to your PC from the link in step 9 below.

  5. Create a folder on your C: drive called Root.

  6. Unzip the ADB package to the Root folder and move the torpedo root file there as well.

  7. Plug your phone into your PC with the USB cable. Set USB Settings to Charge Only.

  8. From your PC click Start:Run: type CMD and click OK.

  9. Enter the prompts shown at How To: Root Motorola Photon 4G

sync - Disable syncing of contact that belongs to multiple groups

I have few Contact Groups.

Friends
Coworkers
Schoolmates

With someone whom I haven't communicated in many years, I add an additional group called Archived. So, for example, a person can be in multiple groups like Friends and Archived. Is there a way I disable syncing contacts to the Android device, which has the Archived group, but sync all other entries?

What I see is:
if the contact has only the Archived group attached to it,
=== then I can disable syncing that contact.
But if the contact has any other group present, along with the Archived group,
=== then I do not know how to disable it.

Answer

You could look at this the other way around and create another group called "not archived" or "active" or something like that, and put all of the contacts that you do want to appear on the phone in that group.

Then you could just sync this group to the phone (and don't select "Friends" "Family" or anything else to sync) and it should work.

wi fi - Play music from PC on Android

If I have shared a folder on my computer that has all my music in it, is it possible, when connected to the same Wifi network with my phone (Nexus One, Gingerbread), to play this music on my phone?

In case I need to use an application that mounts the shared folder on my phone, it would be extra awesome if it would mount automatically when connecting to that network.

virtualization - How to fix android-x86 install on VMware?

Using android-x86-4.4-r3.iso, I created a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 11.0.0 on Mac OS X. I just clicked Create virtual machine, chose my Android ISO, and just hit Next repeatedly until finished (just like I do to create Windows VMs).

I'm not a master at VMware. What did I do wrong in there? I ran into trouble, as in this picture:

rooting - How do I update my rooted Samsung galaxy s4?

This is a complex question for me so I appreciate anyone helping me through it. I have a galaxy s4 that hasn't been updated since purchase b/c I was afraid to lose root.

I'm in the process of backing everything up now.

My concerns are...

1 Should I unroot? Will I screw up unrooting. I'm not familiar with the latest tools available and I don't know if it's necessary b/c...

2 I assume I can just do a factory reset and that will negate the need to unroot? Am I wrong?

3 Again I assume after doing the factory reset I can do the updates via my device OTA. Here's my most significant concern, that I shouldn't do all the updates b/c the most recent update has somehow thwarted whatever rooting tools might be currently available.

4 reroot, install a current ROM, reset up device.

I've done this a number of times with a number of devices but I haven't done it since I got this galaxy s4 shortly after release. That's how long it's been. I know there are tutorials and videos and tools and forums but I think I have some unique issues and context here. Any help will be appreciated.

a2dp - Is it possible to be connected to two different bluetooth devices at the same time?

I'd like to be able to send A2DP to my car stereo while at the same time sending phone calls to the speakerphone I have in my car. I haven't bought the stereo adapter yet, since I wanted to find out if this setup would work, otherwise I would just try it. ;)

Thanks!

Answer

Yes, you can have multiple bluetooth devices connected to your phone.

Additionally, you can use Smart Bluetooth Widget Pro by MDR Tools, Inc. available from Google Play Store to help you manage those devices:

This is a must have widget for your android if you have any bluetooth devices.

It adds a bluetooth icon to your home screen, and by just clicking on it, It will display you the list of paired devices and you can just click and connect to your bluetooth devices. No need to go to settings screen, turn the bluetooth on, and connect to your devices.

When you walk away from your bluetooth device, this widget not just cancels the bluetooth connection, It also turns off the bluetooth to save more from the battery.

You can also connect to multiple bluetooth devices at the same time.
You can connect to your speaker, and your headset at the same time.

There's also a free version Smart Bluetooth Widget Free.

2.3 gingerbread - DroidX data encryption - which algorithm and how strong?

I have a follow-up to the question posted here. I recently got a 2.3 DroidX phone, and noticed that it as well has data encryption option. I pulled an SD card from device, and noticed that folder structure is intact. I tried reading file from the SD card, which was produced by a photo application, and it was unreadable, however the file itself contained some data which was not random, which to me indicated that not the whole file was AES'ed. I was also able to put an unencrypted file on SD card which was readable afterwards.

So, the question is: does anyone know what encryption methodology is being used here, what algorithms are in place, and how strong they are against experienced attacker?

EDIT: My friend got a droid2, which also runs gingerbread 2.3.3, and it has data encryption feature too. So... is data encryption an android feature or specific to Motorola devices?

Answer

Apparently, DroidX uses ecryptfs

Following are mount options on /data/data:

rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,nodiratime,ecryptfs_sig=****************,

ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=32,ecryptfs_passthrough

I would imagine this means that encryption key here is 32 bytes, which is 256 bits, which seems pretty good to me.

ebook reader - Are Google Books DRM protected?

In some countries Google Play offers ebooks. I was wondering if those are DRM protected.

Can I export them as e.g. epub? Or are they bound to be read within the Google Play Books application?

Answer

Some are DRM protected, others aren't.

One way I'm aware of to find out the ones that are DRM, is when you try to download the file for offline reading:

  • If the extension is .acsm then its a DRM protected book.

  • If the extension ends in .epub or .pdf then its not DRM. protected.

Related reading:

File types for reading on your device

Related to exporting the eBook to a certain format or have it restricted to be read on Google Play, the above first link answers your doubt, where they stat that you can read or download to read your eBook on other devices or applications.

applications - How to install from unknown sources on AT&T?

A friend of mine has an HTC Aria on AT&T. On his application settings screen, he does not have the option to allow installation of apps from unknown sources. Is there any way to change this option to allow him to install downloaded apps (*.apk files) without rooting the phone?

Answer

Unfortunately, it seems like the HTC Aria does have that ability, but AT&T has removed it.

What is best way to connect to multiple devices simultaneously?

Answer

This is one example, you have to make the split, it's doesn't seem to be an option,

root@kali:# adb devices
List of devices attached
4fddcdd8054fc421 device
5cf4b0890675d95c device

root@kali:# export DEVA=4fddcdd8054fc421 && export DEVB=5cf4b0890675d95c

root@kali:# adb -s $DEVA shell uname -a && adb -s $DEVB shell uname -a

Linux kali 3.4.0-Mina-my-love-33x--gdba1771-dirty #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 6 18:05:16 EDT 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux
root@kali:#

  • Export a variable for each device serial.

  • adb -s $VAR1 shell && adb -s $VAR2 shell

Note this is done without a hub. It might be the hub throwing things off?

Also apparently you dont need to && when exporting/echoing variables

root@kali:# export DEVA=4fddcdd8054fc421 DEVB=5cf4b0890675d95c
root@kali:# echo $DEVA $DEVB

samsung galaxy s - How can I take a photo when battery

How can I take photo when battery level is less than 20%? My Samsung Galaxy S always says "battery low" and then closes the camera application when I try to. Is there a way to get around this? Or is 19% not powerful enough to take a photograph (my camera has no flash).

Answer

Try downloading and using a third-camera app from the market. The restriction is apparently on the stock camera app, not on the hardware (the camera itself). I downloaded Retro Camera, and it is able to take a picture when my Galaxy S is on low battery. That might not be the app you want, so do a search on the market with the keyword "Camera".

Faulty battery status indication

I have a Huawei Honor U8860 with Android ICS. I use two Mugen Power batteries. I always use one battery until it's empty, then charge it to full while using the other battery. Recently Android battery level has started to behave incorrectly. The battery level drops dramatically, then stays at the same level for a long time. I experience similar behavior with all the three batteries I own: the Mugen Power batteries and the original battery.

Below is the battery status chart at this moment. Suddenly the battery level dropped to 3 % yesterday, but it stayed there and I've been able to use the phone actively for another day since then. Clearly the battery is still performing well, but Android gets incorrect information about the charge, sometimes even shuts the phone down.

I tried calibrating with Battery Calibration app, but the problem has only got worse. Any ideas what's causing the problem? How does Android get the battery level? From the electronics integrated into the battery or by deducing from the voltage level? What does the calibration actually do?

htc desire - What will be faster when moving to sd-ext via A2SD+ Data or Dalvik-cache? (or can I move both with no extra-penalty)

I'm using A2SD+ on my HTC Desire running on MIUI.

Currently only the app and app-private are under /sd-ext, but I'm running out of space very quickly :)

Currently my dalvik-cache consumes 46.3MB and the data takes 53.7MB of internal phone memory, so I think data will give me more value, but I'm not 100% sure of that either.

I know I can technically move both data and dalvik-cache to /sd-ext, but I understood there could be performance problems, but I need the space. So my question is which will have a lesser effect on performance? Moving the data or the dalvik-cache?

EDIT: Some tech info (if it helps):
My SD Card - Kingmax, Class 10, 16GB

I tested with SD Tools and got these results: Writing Speed: 8.7 MB/s
Reading Speed: 18.6 MB/s

Note that the test was on the FAT32 partition, I don't know if the EXT3 partition I use for the /sd-ext will be any faster. The /sd-ext partition is 1GB.

Answer

As Matthew already stated, there's no unique answer possible to your question -- all depends on your usage patterns. Generally spoken, I'd say moving app data should be preferred: If you move the Dalvik Cache, it would affect all your apps -- while moving the app data only affects apps which store some data (and by "some" I mean "data size exceeds their Dalvik-Cache size"), so a good guess is it affects only a few apps. But this can very well be those apps you are using most, and which heavily access their data -- so it may or may not be the better choice in some cases.

Guess you've got to try. I'd suggest starting with the app data. A class 10 card should provide sufficient speed -- so if the results are acceptable to you, stay with this. Otherwise, go back and try with the Dalvik Cache. If this isn't acceptable either, the only choice left is buying a new device with bigger internal storage...

applications - What's the difference between the various lost phone apps?

I want to get a security app for my phone. I mostly need something in case my phone gets lost or stolen.

htc evo - USB host mode with class compliant audio interfaces

I have an HTC EVO, and it is my understanding that the hardware supports USB host mode. I am still working to confirm this, but even if it doesn't, I understand other devices do, and that the Android kernel supports USB2Go.

Assuming the hardware is capable, what would it take to get Android to use a USB audio interface? I am only interested in trying to get it working for class-compliant interfaces, as anything else isn't worth the effort.

I understand this is a bit of an general question. I am hoping someone has already tried this. I'm a software developer but have not dug into Android much. This would be a heavy first project for me, but any information on how/if this could even be done would be much appreciated.

Edit: Seems this guy got it working on a Nexus One: http://sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/

Edit #2: So, since there seem to be drivers available... how would I load them? Is ADB the only way? Is a kernel update required, or can I simply drop the modules in place and load them? If a kernel update is required, can I replace the kernel without losing everything else?

Answer

Fortunately, Android 5.0 properly supports class-compliant USB audio capture! It doesn't seem to work in all applications, but many work just fine. I just used my Zoom H4n on a Galaxy S6 with the getUserMedia test page on Firefox.

Why does the Google Authenticator app have "obsolete" in its title on Play Store?

Why does the Google Authenticator app have "obsolete" in its title on Play Store?

Does it work? Can I still use it for two-factor authentication? Is there a preferred method?

Answer

Looks like Google has released a new version of Authenticator (as of March 21, 2012) under a new package name: com.google.android.apps.authenticator2.

Old version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.authenticator

New version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.authenticator2

Different package names means that you can have them both installed simultaneously, but my guess is that Google will eventually remove the old version from the Play Store.

Installing Authenticator 2 without uninstalling Authenticator allows Authenticator 2 to import your currently configured sites.

I've read a few posts from people claiming that Google lost their signing key, and this why they have to release a new app under a new package name. I want to emphasize that there is no evidence to support this claim. While it is true that signing keys cannot be changed with app updates and therefore require a completely new app/package name, a more plausible explanation could be that Google wants to integrate Authenticator more tightly (e.g., shared UIDs, signature permissions) with other apps (see below).

Additional info for those interested:

The signing key used on the old version of Google Authenticator (SHA1 fingerprint: 24:BB:24:C0:5E:47:E0:AE:FA:68:A5:8A:76:61:79:D9:B6:13:A6:00) is also used to sign: Scoreboard, Goggles, Finance, Google Voice, Shopper, Transalte, Chrometophone, Earth, Reader, and a few others.

The signing key used on the new version of Google Authenticator (SHA1 fingerprint: 38:91:8A:45:3D:07:19:93:54:F8:B1:9A:F0:5E:C6:56:2C:ED:57:88) is used to sign: Google Maps, Google Play Store, Gmail, Google+, Google Chrome and Google Music.

Update: Google has put up a blog post talking about the new up as well as the upgrade procedure.

tethering - automatically tether USB

Google Maps show location history where I've never even been

I have a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime and it has Google Maps downloaded on it as well as other Google apps. My husband went through my phone and in the Google Maps app, under timeline, apparently it showed that I had actually went to several places on days when I had never left the house, but the worse part is that it's saying I've been to places I've never even been.

This whole situation is frustrating because I love my husband very much but now he is completely convinced that I'm cheating on him, and I'm not; there has to be someone out there that can explain this total mess cause my husband doesn't believe a word I say.

Please help me figure this mess out and convince my husband that I'm not lying and in definitely not cheating!

insufficient memory - How to adjust the threshold for the "storage low" event?

There's almost no Android user (and certainly no regular visitor of our site) who hasn't heard of the "insufficient storage" error – or even experienced it him/herself. That there must be at least 10% of storage free on /data sounds ridiculous at least when the total space on that partition goes at or beyond 8 GB. Thus we quite frequently have questions on this topic here.

On one of the latest I've done some investigation of the relevant code, and discussed that in my answer. Let me quote the relevant code-block (taken from the latest code) here again:

 * This class implements a service to monitor the amount of disk
* storage space on the device. If the free storage on device is less
* than a tunable threshold value (a secure settings parameter;
* default 10%) a low memory notification is displayed to alert the
* user. If the user clicks on the low memory notification the
* Application Manager application gets launched to let the user free
* storage space.

Now please focus on lines 2+3:

If the free storage on device is less than a tunable threshold value (a secure settings parameter; default 10%)

(emphasis mine). So here comes my question:

TL;DR: If that threshold is tunable, how to tune it?

Is it something in settings we overlooked all those years? Is this supposed to be "tuned" by the "ROM bakers" only? Or, taking the hint of a "secure settings parameter", is there some app utilizing the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission to take care of that? By which means are we supposed to address this (if at all)?

How can I tell if I have root?

I've been attempting to root my phone (Samsung Intercept M910, but that probably doesn't matter).

How can I tell that I have actually, successfully gained root? I've run a few apps which require root, and some work and some don't, so I'm unclear if I've gained root or not.

Answer

Use terminal emulator (a popular free/open-source terminal emulator is Android Terminal Emulator, available from F-droid or Play Market), open the emulator and type

Disable lock-screen enter/return button?

Is there any way to have the lock-screen unlock as soon as I enter the correct code? For instance, on my iPod touch if I type the 4 digit passcode, it'll unlock as soon as I hit that fourth digit. Is there any equivalent of this on Android? On my Droid X2, I have to enter the PIN and then hit the arrow-like return button.

Answer

No, because unlike the iphone/ipod touch, the unlock PIN can be longer then 4 digits. Android allows between 4 and 16 digits for the lock screen. Since it is "unknown" what the length of your pin is, you have to press OK to indicate "you are done".

Answer

Go to Settings → Storage and tap on the overflow menu in the top right (on a device with a physical menu key, you may need to press that instead). This should bring up a menu item labeled "USB Computer Connection":

enter image description here

Tap on that, and it will give you a list with possible connection modes. Uncheck everything that you don't intend to use. On my N5/CM11 there are only two options on this page: MTP and PTP. Unchecking both causes the phone to simply charge when plugged into a PC. I have seen others that have an explicit "Charge Only" option, but I believe that is nonstandard.

Rooting an unbranded tablet

I bought one of these simple cheap Chinese no-name tablets: HDMI, Bluetooth, HD display, dual-core CPU. Unfortunately, it came without official Google apps such as Market and Gmail. I tried different ways to install these apps. Every time I got a Force Close error.

I'm using Ubuntu as my workstation and looked with adb for the device. Found one, good! The command lsusb gives me

Bus 001 Device 031: ID 18d1:4e22 Google Inc. Nexus S (debug)

I've tried obtaining root access on this device, without any success. Information about the hardware is attached as a screenshot, made with Quadrant Benchmark.

I have tried these tools:

  • SuperOneClick

  • UniversalAndroot

  • EasyRootICS

BusyBox is installed but without su. Cannot remount /system, because its not permitted.

Cannot login with adb root, it fails with the following message

> adbd cannot run as root in production builds

What is a widget?

What distinguishes a widget from an app or a shortcut? I can understand the concept of an app, as something that runs on Android to provide a particular use or function. I can also understand the concept of a shortcut, to provide a way of accessing an app.

Is a widget a special type of app or a special type of shortcut or is it characterised in a way that is distinct from both an app and a shortcut?

Answer

There are two different kinds of Widget in Android:

  • AppWidget: a small view of an application (e.g. Weather widget) that can be embedded inside another application (e.g. Home Screen)

  • GUI Widget: buttons, textbox, etc; any visual interface element.

I believe you're talking about the former (AppWidget). An AppWidget always belongs to an App. An App that acts as a AppWidgetHost (e.g. HomeScreen apps) can lend a part of its UI to be managed by the App that provides an AppWidget.

In short, it is a way of embedding an application inside another application.

An AppWidget is usually used as a "smart shortcut"; a shortcut that provides additional logic other than just being clickable and launching an Activity. Typical examples of AppWidget is Recent Email/SMS/Facebook/Twitter/whatever-your-favorite-messaging-app Widgets, Astrid's Task List, Calendar Widget, etc.

An AppWidget is conceptually a GUI Widget, except that AppWidget is a GUI Widget that is not provided by Android's framework, instead it is provided by some other application installed in the system.

htc sensation - How to debug a battery issue?

I have HTC Sensation 4G. I have a very peculiar issue with the battery. I've been using the phone for just over one year now. There are some periods (about 7 to 15 days) when battery performance is absolutely fine.

But then after certain days of good performance battery starts behaving weirdly: Phone gets switched off even at over 60% battery. Restarting it shows about 5% battery, again switches off, restart shows around 20% etc.

So I guessed there is some calibration issue. Taking out the battery at the time of this erratic behavior makes it work fine for a little while (half an hour to a couple of hours) then again the stupidity starts. I have tried draining the battery to 0% and then a full charge, tried various usage models (not using wifi, disabling animations to reduce usage etc.) nothing seems to work.

I can't properly debug this issue properly as connecting to computer starts charging and when its charging there are no such issues. This is REALLY frustrating, Any one has any idea how to debug it?

(I have come to know that certain batch of HTC sensation has this issue, not everyone has experienced similar problems but there are people and no one has been able to point me in the right direction)

uninstallation - How do I uninstall an application?

If I want to completely uninstall an application from the home screen or list of applications; how do I do it?

Answer

You can uninstall an application from the Market or from the Manage Applications settings screen.

From Marketplace:

  1. Start the Market app.

  2. Hit the menu button and select Downloads.

  3. Find the app you want to uninstall and select it.

  4. Hit the Uninstall button at the bottom.

From Manage Applications:

  1. From your Home screen hit the menu button and select Settings.

  2. Select "Applications"

  3. Select "Manage Applications"

  4. Find the app you want to uninstall and select it.

  5. Hit the Uninstall button at the top.

EDIT: I wanted to add a 3rd method that Rohan Singh had in his answer.

From your Home screen:

  1. Tap and hold on the icon of the application you want to uninstall.

  2. When the trash can appears near the bottom center of the screen, drag and hold the icon there.

  3. After the tap & hold / drag & hold some text will appear indicating that you can uninstall by dropping the application's icon on the trash can.

  4. Release your finger over the trash can and you'll be taken to the same uninstall screen you can get to through Manage Applications in your Settings.

samsung galaxy s - SMS thread message total doesn't increase past 201

I have a Samsung Galaxy S running firmware version 2.2 with pretty much the default configuration it came with from the shop. On it, the (Unread/All) counter with one of my contacts has been stuck at (0/201) for quite a while, even though I've been sending more messages to the contact in question so the All value should be increasing at the very least.

Screenshot

Any idea how to get this to refresh so it shows the updated total? Or is this a hard limit set somewhere or something like that?

Answer

It's because there's a threshold beyond which it starts deleting old messages. Go into messaging, hit the menu button & go to settings. The first option is Delete old messages (checked by default), and the next is Text message limit (set to 200 by default). So you've just hit that threshold & it's deleting your old messages.

Is There A Browser Which Makes It Easy/Possible To Search From The Address Bar?

For those familiar with the Google Chrome browser, I'm looking for the feature which basically treats the address bar as a search bar when not navigating to a site. I would find this handy since it's annoying to have to navigate to Google.com first (which is the only option on the stock browser) or using the search widget. Is there a browser for that?

Answer

Dolphin Browser HD allows you to search google from the address bar, and it shows suggestions as you type. It doesn't explicitly say that it has this feature but I use it all the time. If you type something in the address bar that's not a web address and hit go it will automatically search, just like Chrome does.

data transfer - Migrating to new rooted phone, how do you restore from your titanium backup from the saved cloud backups

I just purchased a new phone and rooted it to android 7.1 and i'm coming from android 6. I backed up my apps via titanium backup to my dropbox cloud. How can I restore all these apps on my new device from those titanium backup files? Or is there a better way to restore a setup like this? I need these apps as they have specific settings and can't just be downloaded again.

Handcent has forgotten half of my contacts

So I've noticed recently that some of my friends contact info has disappeared, at least when using Handcent. If I get a text from them, I only see their numbers, and if I try and send a message they aren't listed in my contacts. If I use the default Text Messaging tool all of my contacts are there, and if I send a message to someone from there, I'll see it in Handcent as well, but without the contact info.

external sd - Android device can support SD Card of up to 32 GB, so FAT32 is more suitable?

May I assume that there is no point to format your SD Card (assume you have the 32 GB size) to NTFS if the device can support SD Card of up to 32 GB and FAT32 maximum limit is also exactly 32 GB?

The reason for asking such question is that since the device can only support 32 GB, so I can assume that NTFS will likely not be supported by the device, or I cannot assume in this way? And this FAT32 will be more suitable and likely to be accepted by major android devices?

Answer

32GB is the limit imposed by the Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) specification, not FAT32.

FAT32 supports 2TB drives, with a standard 512 byte sector (or 16TB with 4.096 byte sectors) which is (coincidentally?) the same as the latest Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) specification, so FAT32 should be viable for some time to come.

The biggest restriction with a FAT32 formatted drive is the per file size restriction. Since FAT32 uses 32bit file pointers, which means that no single file can be larger than 4GB (actually 232-1). Most of the time this isn't a problem, but if you want to transport movies or virtual machines which aren't split into multiple smaller files, then this might cause you problems.

As an aside, in an answer like this, I can't help but illustrate it with a favorite picture of mine which compares 8 bytes of magnetic core memory from 1953 with 8GB (8 thousand million bytes) of flash from 2008:

enter image description here

In the same space as those 8 bytes from 1953 you could now fit 8x or 12x 32GB uSD cards (when you take into account thickness too) so who knows where we will be in another 55 years? Probably wondering how we got by with only a couple of terabytes in our phone. *8')

2.3 gingerbread - How to uninstall a device administrator app that wont deactivate?

My cousin decided to download an app on my phone as a joke. I tried to uninstall it but it just won't uninstall. It's an administrator app, I tried to deactivate it but it won't deactivate. Whenever I try to deactivate it, it shuts down my phone. What should I do? I tried to root my phone and delete it that didn't work either.

How can I uninstall this app?

sms - Message Memory Full, Incoming message rejected

I got this message on my phone:

Message Memory full
Incoming message rejected

I have deleted a lot of messages, and I have also run the memory cleaners I have on my phone.

What should I do?

Exactly which memory is used?

Are there alternate apps that will let me store the messages in a different location?

Answer

According to several sources (including a.o. TechniPages and AndroidCentral) the cause of this problem is lacking space in your device's internal memory, which must have at least 25MB free space left.

T-Mobile's support pages have a detailed instruction on how to solve the issue. Though for some steps it was not clear to me what Android version (and what menu option) they were referring to, as a basic abstract the most important points include:

  • Remove apps you no longer need
This is the fastest solution, as it will certainly reclaim larger amounts of space per single step. To do so, you can e.g. use Androids default app manager: Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Applications, select the Downloaded tab (you only can remove apps you downloaded yourself), check which apps you no longer need, tap their entry, and hit the Uninstall (or Remove) button. In case this is grayed out, you might need to Force Stop the app first.

  • Move apps to your sd card
This option is available with Android 2.2 and higher, but doesn't work with all apps. In short, apps must actively support this -- and must not provide widgets and some other things in order to be moved to sd card. The built-in "mover" only permits you to move apps applying to these rules.

  • Cleaning up caches
You can do so manually going to Settings → Applications → Manage Applications, select "All" (not just "Downloaded"), tap each app, and select the Clear Cache button.

  • Clear history
This is for your call-logs etc. I doubt this reclaims lots of space.

Having followed these essential steps (which I placed in the order of "most effective first"), your problem should be gone.

applications - Make website think you have a different size screen

I've been told that changing the user agent isn't enough.

I've been told asking for desktop version does not work 90% of the time.

The website measures the actual size of the screen. It does not care about DPI.

So, this Change the screen size and dpi does not answer this question.

How do you change the screen size in android. Or trick it. I'm open to any suggestions. I would like a rooted and unrooted method if possible. I don't mind downloading 3rd party applications either to get this to work.

End goal is to get desktop website to load.

applications - How to keep two versions of an app installed?

Android Market has just updated an app in my device. I liked the update, but its fully different from last version which was also my favorite. So, I want to keep last version too. I have last version's apk thanks to Titanium Backup. But, I can't install it without replacing current one (Android architecture sucks). Is there any way to do this? Hacks etc..
Note: I want to keep current version which must be connected with Market to receive future updates.

Answer

It can be done, but not simple for the reasons eldarerathis mentioned. You need apktool. Refer to this guide on how to use it. And this on signing the apk after you're done.

You need to modify the AndroidManifest.xml file. Find the line that looks like this:

manifest package="com.example.app"

and change it to something like:

"com.example.app.foo"

After you're finished, recompile then resign. To restore your data, try the following via adb:

adb rm /data/data/com.example.app.foo

adb push /data/data/com.example.app /data/data/com.example.app.foo

Where com.example.app is the package name of the original and com.example.app.foo is the modified.

There's always a slight chance that the app will break, or depending on the way the app is structured you may receive a dialog every time you change the screen prompting you to choose which app you want to launch, but it's definitely worth a try if you want it badly enough.

Of course, the two apps will not share the same settings and data.

4.0 ice cream sandwich - Prevent ICS From Mounting USB Storage

I have a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx running Android 4.0.4. I'd like to prevent ICS from mounting USB storage every time I plug it into a USB host. I just want it to charge by default. I am very dissatisfied that they took away this option in the upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS.

I am willing to do stuff in the terminal that requires root privilege to prevent this from happening, but I would be happier if there is an app for it. I want my phone to Charge Only when I plug it into a USB host.

Infinite boot animation screen Nexus 5

** SO I AM RENDERING THIS NEXUS 5 DEAD (BRICKED FOREVER)

My daughter was using this Nexus 5 device and the power button started causing her problems. Well I removed the power button and ordered a new one. So now the power button is not an issue. But I guess during the time that the phone constantly kept rebooting due to the bad power button, something got corrupt. Now the device gets to the boot animation and never goes any further. There are no options in recovery for me to use. I have working ADB and Fastboot on my PC. I can see the device with Fastboot but not ADB because I can't get the device to boot into the OS for me to enable USB debug. But I know ADB works because I used it just the other day on a Galaxy S5.

I have tried to run fastboot oem unlock, it unlocks the device then once you reboot the boot loader, it says locked again. I have tried using Nexus Root Toolkit and hit unlock and it unlocks then says the phone will reset itself and just be patient. It may appear to bootloop but just wait. I waited for an hour and still just sits at the boot animation.

What are my options without being able to enable USB debug since the device will not boot to the OS?

I am able to Temporarily boot to a custom recovery, but I can't mount data!!! With Temporary TWRP, I am able to use ADB and I get a success message when I push a new system image to it, and when I push twrp recovery to it, but when the phone reboots, I find out that neither the system image or recovery were actually installed.

I looked into bad partitions, tried some fixes, and nothing works. I am so far beyond frustrated with this thing. I guess I will wait one more day to see if anyone else has any other ideas for me to try, then I am just going to put it in the trash.

  • Bootloop

  • Bootloader doesn't stay unlocked

  • Unable to mount storage

  • USB Debugging is not enabled and can't be enabled

  • Can't install OS image

  • Can't install Recovery

  • Can run TWRP temporary

  • Can use ADB when TWRP Temporary is running, still can't mount anything

contacts - Number recognition of company number ranges

I would like it, if it was possible to program a number range of a company in my phone as a pseudo-contact.

For example, I know my company has a thousand telephone numbers in a block. I have a number in that range, as have all my co-workers. For some, the number is ofcourse in my address book, and their name shows up correctly. However, I would like to add the whole range, so that in absence of a more specific match, it would still show my company name as the caller.

I doubt if this is possible, but should anybody know of a way, I'd like to hear about it.

sync - Copy synced videos in/from Dailymotion

Is it possible to access the sync'ed DailyMotion videos somewhere else?

I know they're saved somewhere in the cache (\mnt\sdcard\Android\data\com.dailymotion.dailymotion\cache\videos). If you clear the cache, they're gone.

Is it possible to move them to somewhere else, e.g., on your SD card or even PC and watch them there?

windows - What options exist when the vendor does not supply an ADB driver for an Android device?

I bought an Android phone and the vendor does not offer any drivers whatsoever. The Android SDK and the drivers that come with it don't seem to work with the device, but the device itself reports as Android 2.2.1.

Other users have reported that the drivers of the Nook Color worked for them, but I cannot confirm this, after trying.

What options do I have to connect to the device (and ultimately to root it)?

Is it truly just the .inf file that I need to manipulate in order to make the device ID known to Windows? After all there are tools to figure out those strings while the device is connected (although "unknown") ...

The model in question is a Simvalley SP-60 GPS.

Note: The OS I need drivers for is either Windows 7 x64 or, if anyone has successfully done that, Windows XP 32bit (under VMware with the USB device connected to it).

Answer

I would try editing extras\google\usb_driver\android_winusb.inf in the Android SDK so that it recognizes your device.

The file should have a section like this that you can extend:

[Google.NTamd64]
; HTC Dream
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C01
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C02&MI_01

%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0FFF

If you go into the Windows Device Manager and view the properties for your device, you should see the ID you need. For example, my Vibrant says USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C under Device IDs and has 3 entries with that and &MI_00, &MI_02, and &MI_03 appended under Bus Relations. I would therefore add this to the .inf file:

; Samsung Vibrant
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C&MI_00
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C&MI_02
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_04E8&PID_681C&MI_03

You should also reboot into the bootloader, recovery mode, etc. and see if that provides more IDs. I know my Vibrant installs new drivers the first time it's connected in each mode, so likely there are more entries needed.

Then just update the driver and select this .inf file. It will probably give you an error about Driver Signature Verification. Depending on your version of Windows there are different ways to temporarily disable that; here is a good guide for Windows 8 and 10. Once it's disabled, install the .inf file and you should be good to go.

I think once you've done that then the USB Mass Storage drivers and so on will be auto-installed when you mount the device to the PC, but if not you could probably extend this process for that.

calls - Is there a way to easily record a phone conversation in-progress?

I do not own an Android device. I was thinking about getting one, and an important feature for me is the ability to record a phone conversation which is in progress - meaning, while I am in the middle of a conversation, I could touch a button which will save a two-sided audio recording of that conversation from the moment onward.

I am aware that recording a conversation I am participating in without notifying the other members is illegal in some places - I have already checked this and have verified that it is completely legal in my country.

Is there is such a functionality in Android, through core features or available applications?

EDIT:

  • I prefer a solution which does not notify the other side of the recording, though it's not a must.

  • I need a solution which works in any country.

Answer

There are a couple of apps to try. I use Ultimate Voice Recorder which costs $4.99 but works beautifully. You can start recording in the middle of a call.

A quick search on AppBrain brought up Record My Call which is free. I haven't used Record My Call so I can't comment on whether or not it can start in the middle of a call.

Update: Ultimate Voice Recorder does record both sides of the conversation.

nexus 7 - Transfer data from one user to another in 4.3

I have the Nexus 7, and I just updated to 4.3, and I'm creating restricted profiles for my kids. They use to play in my main profile, and they progressed a lot in several games and, when they access their new user, they have to start over. Is there anyway to migrate the application data from my main user to the restricted users? I'm not rooted. Tks

Answer

Had the same problem with my kids profile. Finally solved, but it required root grants!

This is what I did:

  1. close all running [app] instances.

  2. from command prompt start ADB shell:

    c:> adb shell

  3. switch to root user (your device must be rooted):

    shell> su

  4. go to in target profile directory:

    root> cd /data/user/[profile_user_id]

For example: profile_user_id==10 for first restricted profile.

  5. rename directory (to have a back up copy)

    root> mv [app_dir] [app_dir].old

  6. copy app data from main profile (id=0) to new profile:

    root> cp -r /data/user/0/[app_dir] .

  7. change owner for files just copied:

    root> find [app_dir] | xargs chown [app_user]:[app_group]

  8. restart device (not sure if it is really needed).

Hope this helps.

6.0 marshmallow - What happens to the already existing internal storage memory if I make SD card my internal storage marshamallow

I recently bought a phone (Lava P7) and upgraded it to Marshmallow. I need more internal memory space so I thought to make SD card my Internal storage. My SD card is 16Gb and internal storage is 8GB if I make SD card my Internal storage, then

My internal storage memory become 16+8 24Gb or 16Gb

if 16Gb, where does the already existing memory goes?

Answer

Let's say that 3 GB of your internal storage is used by the system, leaving you with 5 GB of usable space, and your SD card is empty.

Currently, you have 5 GB usable for apps (internal storage) and 21 GB usable for media (both the internal storage and the SD card). Note that the media storage will still be divided between the two storage locations, which makes it hard to manage. Installing apps/app data will reduce the available space for internal media, and vice versa.

Under adoptable storage, you will have 21 GB for apps (internal storage + SD card) and 16 GB usable for media (SD card). Note that each app is either fully on the internal storage, or fully on the adopted SD card. Installing/moving apps and their data to the SD card will reduce the available space for media on the SD card, and vice versa.

Essentially, your choice is: Allow media to also be on the internal storage, or allow apps to also be on the SD card. (Plus, in the latter case the SD card will no longer be accessible when removed from the device unless decrypted.) You cannot have both; both storage locations remain separate and are not combined into a single logical partition. The only difference is what is "allowed" in each spot and how it can be accessed.

Please refer to this reddit post for more background on how this works.

rom flashing - How to restore my phone, after replacing my systemui with a modded one?

I recently saw a thread about a modded systemui on XDA here and downloaded it. I replaced my present systemui with this one and rebooted my phone. I think that at first the replaced systemui didn't work so I got a systemui-less experience (You can learn about my experience by reading the comment I made on SO here ).

Then I learnt that I hadn't set the permissions rightly so I changed the permissions of the new systemui to 644 as said at XDA and rebooted my phone.

After the reboot my apps were optimized as it happens after an update. But this time the new systemui worked (probably) as I now have an all black screen after my phone boots normally.

I then tried to enter into recovery mode and wiped the data (factory reset option) and booted again, but that was of no use as the problem persisted.

What can I do now? Will I have to go all the way reflashing my phone? Could anyone suggest a better option as reflashing seems to be the last option for me. Thanks in advance.

Phone model: Lenovo Vibe C, 16 GB variant, currently running Android Lollipop.

EDIT

  • It was all my fault as the mods were meant for Samsung galaxy alpha (I did not read the title at XDA before messing up)

  • I don't have a custom recovery installed nor do I have a NANDROID backup made before. I'm completely helpless.😭😭

security - Apps trying to install in background

I recently wanted to install a metronome app, so I downloaded one from the Play Store, but in the "install" step nothing happened. The app just wasn't there. I installed another one and forgot about that strange issue.

Yesterday though, something started to happen. Every now and then (and it's getting more and more frequently), I get a notification that some app tried to install itself (!) but was blocked because it's from "unknown sources", and it's prompting me to disable the "block install from unknown sources" check from Settings.

It looks like there are more than one apps trying to install themselves: "Superb Cleaner". "com.android.helper.patch[...]" and some more.

At first I though these might be system updates and was tempted to disable the "unknown source" block, but now I am worried I might have some malware on my phone.

I do have some sensitive information (browser logins, credit card data), and I also don't want to factory reset my phone.

Where should I search for the APK that is trying to install itself (or the APKs)?

EDIT: It's this application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andymstone.metronome. I'm not entire sure the app is the cause, but it's strange that I don't have it installed, but in my google play account it appears as "Installed"...

My phone is an Allview X2 Soul Style with Android 5.1.

After I have unchecked the "block apps from unknown sources", now I keep getting prompted the install screen for these apps. I keep pressing "Cancel" but they come again every half an hour or so. :(

EDIT2: Here are the adb logs requested: Windows and Activities

EDIT3: Dumpsys log for the suspicious package: Dumpsys

It's not a notification but a dialog and it looks like this:

Yes, never enable that Unknown sources setting if you're in uncharted waters.

Where should I search for the APK that is trying to install itself (or the APKs)?

It's a bit difficult to find the app. I recommend finding the cause for the effect. In our case, the effect was the dialog hinting that the Unknown sources setting was blocked. That dialog is shown by Package Installer (a system-cum-core app). Package Installer is used by user or system apps which do not have the permission android.permission.INSTALL_PACKAGES to install an app. Since you did not attempt to side load an app, it stands to reason that an app called Package Installer without your consent. Our imminent goal is to find out that particular app.

The system service activity logs many important details. Among other things it shows the called package which in this case is Package Installer app with package name com.google.android.packageinstaller or com.android.packageinstaller. It also shows the calling package or the package which launched an another package.

Now, using in PC execute the command:

adb shell dumpsys activity activities # this command should be executed only when that dialog is in foreground

Demo output: notice the highlighted line:

enter image description here

In the highlighted line, the string after launchedFromPackage= and before userId is the package responsible for launching Package Installer app. In your case it would be a different package name. Note down that package name (henceforth denoted as ).

Now that we know the immediate cause we can hunt down the home or in other words, the apk. Execute the command:

Note: Finding the location of apk is required only for forensics. If you're not interested in that, I recommend you don't bother with this step and immediately jump to the heading Uninstall/Disable/Hide the app.

adb shell pm path

Demo output:

bash-4.2# adb shell pm path com.estrongs.android.pop

package:/data/app/com.estrongs.android.pop-1/base.apk

The string next to package: is the location of apk. You can also find the same information inter alia through the command:

adb shell dumpsys package

If you know the label of the package or can get to know it through any means (such as with AppXplore) then go into the application manager under Settings app which typically comes down Settings → Apps → All apps in stock Android, find the malware app and uninstall it.

Things to note

  • If Uninstall button is grayed out and so as the Force stop button then your app must be a device administrator. In that case, go into the Security settings, choose Device administrators option and revoke the administrator privilege from the app. Come back and attempt to uninstall the app.

  • If you don't find the Uninstall option then your malware app is a system app. Whether your vendor shipped it or the app exploited your system or tricked you to install itself is another matter to deal with. For a system app, the button Uninstall is replaced by Disable.

    • If both Force stop and Disable buttons are grayed out then the app may be a device administrator as well. In that case, revoke that privilege and then attempt to disable the app.

    • If the Disable button alone is grayed out, then:

      • For a rooted Android: use to disable the app through the commands:

        adb shell

        su
        pm disable

To enable the app, replace disable with enable in aforesaid command.

You can alternatively use an app, such as Titanium Backup, to disable/freeze the malware app. You can also consider removing the apk using a file manager app.

      • For a non-rooted Android: provided that you're using Android 4.4.x or above, use the commands:

        adb shell
pm block # for Android 4.4.x

pm hide # for Android 5.x and 6.x

To unblock/unhide the package replace block by unblock and hide by unhide in appropriate aforesaid command. In this particular case, hiding the package would achieve the same result as disabling would.

The package would remain disabled or hidden until you revert the changes.

Note for readers

It has been confirmed by question's author that the malware app in their phone has the package name com.android.tools.callassistant. I found its label as Caller ID and it has been reported as a malware by AVG.

samsung galaxy note 2 - Custom keyboard shortcuts for Android

I am trying to create some custom shortcuts for often-used words/phrases using the built in dictionary, but have run into a roadblock.

I'm trying to follow the instructions in this blog post, specifically:

  • Tap Settings, Language & Input, then “Personal dictionary.” (Note: the exact settings may differ depending on the make and model of your Android phone.)

  • Tap the “+” sign in the top-right corner of the screen, then enter the word or phrase (like “on my way”) you’d like to make a shortcut for.

  • Next, type a brief shortcut that’s easy to remember; for example, “omw” for “on my way.”

  • Tap the Back key, and you’ll see an entry for the shortcut you just added. Want to add more shortcuts? Tap the “+” sign again.

  • Now, go to the Messaging app, compose a new message, and tap one of your new shortcuts—and when you do, the phrase you entered will appear in the row of auto-correct options just above the keyboard. Tap the phrase to add it to your message.

However, I'm not able to find these settings on my Galaxy Note 2. How can I do this?

In the first step itself I am stuck. Didn't find any option for 'Personal Dictionary' sort of thing.

Tap Settings, Language & Input, then “Personal dictionary.”

rooting - How can I root my Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet?

Lenovo doesn't provide updates for the Thinkpad Tablet any more. I'd like to install a custom ROM and therefore need root.

How can I root my Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet?

Answer

The method "debugfs automated root" works for the latest official ROM of the Thinkpad Tablet. Like most other root methods, you need to have the Android SDK (or at least adb) installed and must be able to connect adb to your Lenovo Thinkpad (Enable debug mode).

  1. Download the exploit from the XDA Post.

  2. unzip DebugfsRoot_Generic_v2.3.zip

  3. adb push debugfs /data/local/

  4. adb push su /data/local/

  5. adb push debugfsinput /data/local/

  6. adb shell mv /data/local/tmp /data/local/tmp.bak

  7. adb shell ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /data/local/tmp

  8. adb reboot

  9. adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/debugfs

  10. Now run the exploit: adb shell "/data/local/debugfs -w /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 < /data/local/debugfsinput"

  11. Cleanup: adb shell rm /data/local/tmp && adb shell mv /data/local/tmp.bak /data/local/tmp

  12. Install superuser: adb install Superuser.apk

Just run the provided RootDebugfs.bat

How to select default application

How can I change the default application for a given file type or protocol? For example, I have multiple browsers on my smartphone and have selected "Internet" (the default browser) to be "the default browser" because it kept asking on every link.

How can I change that to ask me each time or at least select a different option?

Thank you.

Answer

Go to:

Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> All -> Web [or Internet]

Hit "Clear Defaults" and that will change it to again ask every time.

Cannot upload arbitrary files using Chrome

Using for the first time latest Chrome (v30.x) on Android 4.0.4 ICS on a 1st Gen. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. To my huge surprise am not able to upload any files other than images or camera videos? In any webmail when I click attach a list of apps is displayed that includes Gallery, Camera etc. But the in-built file manager (My Files) is nowhere to be seen. Thinking there was a problem with it I tried many other file manager apps but none of them show up either. In stock Android browser though the in-built file manager is visible and allows me to select and upload files with any extension.

What could be wrong with Chrome and if possible how can I fix it?

4.0 ice cream sandwich - How can I securely install an older version of Chrome on a device that won't support newer versions?

I have an Android device that runs Android 4.0.2 and can't be updated any further.

When I tried to install Chrome from the Play Store, I was told:

Your device isn't compatible with this version.

Indeed, Google says:

Chrome is available on phones and tablets running Android 4.1+ (Jelly Bean). If you're on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), Chrome version 42 and lower will work, but you won’t get any updates to Chrome.

Fine by me, I can run and older version of Chrome. But where can I download the APK? A Google search for Chrome 42 Android gives me a lot of domains that I don't trust. I generally try to avoid installing or running executables from sources I'm not familiar with.

From Googles quote above, they seem to recommend that people on 4.0 run older versions of Chrome. But do they provide the APK? Or does any other trustworthy source provide it?

Answer

Give this a try:

http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/chrome/chrome-42-0-2311-111-release/chrome-42-0-2311-111-4-android-apk-download/

I use APK mirror all the time and have never had any issues. You said 42 and below right? This is version 42

lg g3 - How to tell if a dual sim phone is dsds or dsfa?

I recently learnt that there are different types of dual sim; i.e. that having slots for 2 sims doesn't mean they're both fully active at the same time.

Looking through the documentation included with my phone & attempting a few searches I haven't been able to find the answer; before requesting my office provide me with a work sim I'd like to know that my phone can handle it.

Is there a way to tell if your phone is dsds or dsfa (i.e. without using a second sim to test)?

How do I update an OTA while retaining TWRP and Magisk, only with my phone?

I have a OnePlus 6 that uses the A/B partition schema.

Previously with my OnePlus 5 with TWRP, I normally download the OTA package, reboot into TWRP to install it, and then TWRP img and Magisk ZIP afterwards. Then I have a fully updated system with TWRP and Magisk.

Now with A/B partition, the OTA gets installed immediately after downloading. I can only flash Magisk before rebooting, by manually extracting the boot image using command-line tools and Magisk's "Patch Boot Image" function, before flashing the patched boot image back. However, I see no option to install TWRP in this way (I'm currently not able to apply the ZIP using CLI tools). Any ideas?

Some good points for OnePlus over AOSP: OnePlus detects Magisk root and downloads full image instead of incremental OTA image, which saves the time for boot restoration, and also allows installing OTA even if /system is modified.

However, there's no "Disable Auto OTA Installation" in Developer Settings, so OTA installation may not be avoidable to some extents.

Answer

I just realized that I self-answered this question some time ago.

The answer is YES. After OTA, I use dd to pull out the new boot image, install TWRP in the way given above, and install Magisk over the TWRP-equipped boot image, and then dd it back. After rebooting, the after-OTA system has TWRP and Magisk ready.

How to save attachment from Gmail?

I've got two MP3 files from my friend via Gmail. How can I save them to my phone? There is only a Preview button...

Answer

After I installed the ASTRO file manager and I went to "Preview" - ASTRO popped up, and saying, "give a filename" ok, then it saved the files!! (the files must be ex.: zipped!!) - and then I was able to extract the files in the zip.

adb - Android 6: connect as camera per default

When I connect an Android 6 phone with my pc via USB, it always connects as "USB for charging". I have to set it to "connect as camera" (PTP) manually (for ADB to work) every time.

Can I set a default option somewhere and haven't found it yet?

Answer

While there may be a hack around somewhere (I don't have Android M yet), Google, in the changelog of Android 6.0 has noted:

Device connections through the USB port are now set to charge-only mode by default. To access the device and its content over a USB connection, users must explicitly grant permission for such interactions.

Well, the answer is no for now, officially, that is.

Google Glass Stuck at the “Glass” screen

My Google Glass is stuck at Glass screen and doesn't go beyond that. Can't fastboot either. The device is recognized by the Android Development Tools Eclipse plugin.

applications - How do I know if an android app for a phone can be installed on an android tablet?

Is there any way to find out? (probably using an emulator or a software to verify?) This is because from my understanding, there are android apps for phone which somehow become either stretched or remain small in screen size when installed on an android tablet.

speakerphone - speaker option enabled by default when answering the calls

Can any of the applications change the call settings? All of a sudden have observed that when an incoming call is answered, Speaker is enabled by default.

After uninstalling some of the applications related to calls, it became normal. But I would like to know what/which caused the change in settings. Apps I deleted are TrueCaller, Call Recorder.

Any information related to this is helpful. Thanks in advance.
