wi fi - Can't change DNS on S3 mini

I am trying to use OpenDNS on my phone. I have tried using SetDNS, DNS Changer, and DNSet. At least two of those claim to allow changing the wifi DNS without root access (I am only using wifi on an unrooted S3 mini with 4.1.2). No matter what I do the OpenDNS test pages say it is not working, and I also installed an app called Ping & DNS which can display my network information and it indicates that my DNS is always obtained from whatever router I am connected to, regardless of any DNS apps I have running.

Actually if I have SetDNS and DNSet running at the same time then SetDNS claims to be using Google's DNS (8.8.8.8, DNSet only supports Google's DNS). But Ping & DNS still says that I am just getting DNS settings from the router. I am not sure which one it really is at that point. Regardless, I want to use OpenDNS.

UPDATE: To be clear, I am using these DNS changing apps because I want all connections to automatically and only use OpenDNS. So either I want to know why none of these apps work as advertised (when reviewers don't say they don't work), or how can I make it work for all connections without an app in such a way that it can't be altered without a password or something. And I really don't want to bother with rooting if I don't have to.

Answer

The OpenDNS website has their own set of instructions to use their services on Android devices, I've provided their instructions below:

  1. Open Settings

  2. Choose Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi Menu

  1. Long click the network you're setting DNS servers for and choose Modify Network

Modify Network

  1. Check Advanced Options

Advanced Options

  1. You might need to scroll down to an option that says IP Settings, click DHCP and change it to Static

Static DNS

  1. The option to change DNS servers will be at the bottom, mine show Google's servers, but I've included the OpenDNS ones below if you don't have them already.

battery life - Turn off cellphone (SIM) radio

How do I turn the cellphone (SIM) radio on an Android phone?

The radio consumes a lot of power (30-70%), especially when the phone is idle. Sometimes I only need to use other functions (e.g., clock, web browser), and make the battery last as long as possible.

"Airplane mode" does this but also turns off the WiFi (close to, but not exactly what I need).

samsung galaxy s 3 - What does it mean to "brick" your phone?

I'm considering unlocking the bootloader on my Verizon Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535). However, a guide I was reading made this statement:

Once you have unlocked your phone’s bootloader using this app, you must not receive any over-the-air (OTA) updates or via Samsung Kies. Doing so will result in bricking your phone.

I understand that bricking a phone means rendering it unusable, but does this also mean unrecoverable? When a phone is "bricked", does that mean it is virtually impossible to restore it to a working state?

I'm a little concerned about the risk if that is the case.

Answer

The term "brick" usually refers to the stone, which means: "device can only be used as paper-weight". Taken literally, there's no way to "unbrick".

Brick

However, you also find terms like "hard-brick" and "soft-brick" used, which makes the term "brick" less absolute: A soft-brick is something you easily can recover from (count it as a "temporary paper-weight"), mostly by software-based solutions (e.g. re-flash your phone) -- while a "hard-brick" is rather meant in the way the original term points to.

Still, technically spoken, even a "hard-bricked" device could be "unbricked" -- but mostly this is more expensive then getting a new device.

As for the warranty declaration you quoted: For a normal user, it's almost impossible to (hard-) brick his device. Even when flashing a custom ROM, this can rarely happen, as there are many security-layers involved. Almost always you can boot your device into some fall-back mode where it is at least recognized by some "flashing software", so you could simply flash another/the original firmware back. Which means, the risk you are taking is to "soft-brick" your device1. A "hard-brick" is quite unlikely with "normal operations" like rooting or flashing custom ROMs.

1 I just learned: "Unless you've got a Samsung device and used the software recommended by Samsung". So better don't use Kies etc., but rather Odin, just to give an example.

root access - How to install european ROM on chinese Galaxy S7 Edge

I have recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge from China, and there are no Google apps, and I still find a lot of text in chinese (yes I changed the language), and the apps still contain chinese. I was wondering if there was any way to install a US or European ROM on it. The model is SM-G9350. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I've never dabbled in installing ROMs or even rooting my phones but I'm a very quick learner. Also, I don't mind if the ROM isn't official, I do plan on rooting the phone eventually.

EDIT:

About Device screenshot

https://i.stack.imgur.com/W9bvi.jpg

Answer

European/US ROMs have to be ported in order to work, but there isn't one that I know of, since the majority of us Chinese value Samsung Pay heavily, and with a non-stock ROM Samsung Pay capability is bombed.

However, at the same time, the G9350 variant is also sold in Hong Kong, which has GAPPS, is more internationalized (presumably with English), and with no hardware difference. You could try out one of its factory firmwares by flashing it via Odin. Brief guidance is on the download page.

EDIT: I've seen your screenshot - from the baseband version, it's quite obvious that your device is not a G9350 - rather, a G935V (Verizon variant) flashed with ported G9350 firmware (see what I said about ported firmwares?). In this case you need to go with G935V factory firmwares.

applications - Wi-Fi icon next to apps in android market

In Android market some app have a Wi-Fi icon next to them. Some examples are Cordy, Fieldrunners HD, Flight Control, Where's My Water?, Wind-up Knight, World of Goo.

What dose it mean that these apps have this icon next to them?

I'm using Galaxy Nexus.

Answer

It means that a Wi-Fi connection is strongly recommended to download them. This is usually because the apps are very large, such as World of Goo which is ~48 MB.

The newest version of the Market (v3.4.4 as of writing) displays a warning that lets you download it anyway, but I think that older versions just wouldn't let you download at all via a cellular connection (not positive on that, but I seem to recall seeing it myself).

installation - Install APK from external_sd

I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. I've read that you can copy an APK file to the SD card and use the browser to activate the installer to install it with this:

file:///sdcard/yourApp.apk

(from: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4268803/android-how-to-install-apk-from-sd-card)

But, I cannot seem to get that to work with external_sd card. I've tried

file:///external_sd/yourApp.apk

I keep getting the following message:

"Data connectivity problem - The Web page contains an error."

Answer

If you have a Samsung phone, some of them have separate "internal" and "external" SD storage. If it's on the external SD card, then you need this adress: file:///sdcard/external_sd/yourApp.apk

video - State of VLC for Android / Media Player that plays AVI files

Does anyone know where the VLC developers are up to with VLC for Android. Is there a beta out, an APK somewhere?

I'm trying to play an AVI on my HTC Legend, to no avail. If VLC is not ready, does anyone know a media player which will play AVIs (is there more than one codec for AVI types?).

Thanks very much.

Answer

Rockplayer has decoders built-in and can play divX files. AVI files are containers - you should also find out what codec has been used for the video. Use a utility like GSpot Codec Information Appliance on your PC to check.

There's also yxPlayer but not too many satisfied users from what I hear although YMMV.

samsung galaxy tab 10 - SD Card Unexpectedly removed error

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 which I bought 4 months ago....love it! Decided to add an external SD card......so I bought a 16 G. After a couple of weeks, I got a notification "SD Card Removed Unexpectedly!" Of course I never removed the card but I could not get the tablet to recognize my SD card. In doing research, I noticed that the instruction said I need a Class 10 card, so not being sure I had a class 10, I went out and bought a 32 G Class 10. Worked beautifully for a week and the error returned......intermittently In turning on the tab, I never know if the message is there and I can see the card on my tab (at times).....other times I can't.

If I put the SD card in a reader connected to my PC, it is fine. I complained to Samsung and they said I can return it for repair since it is under warranty. Do anyone know if Samsung CAN repair this problem? I don't want to waste the money or time if it is not going to do any good..... Also have anyone discovered a fix or cause of this problem?

Answer

The problem is withe SD Card slot on the device. Return your device to SAMSUNG for repair or replacement.

Is it possible to add the NFC to the phone which does not have it?

My phone is a Motorola Moto 2g LTE (xt1072). It is really good phone but there is a one problem, it does not have NFC. Is there any solution, to add NFC to the phone which does not have it – and would Android be able to use it then? If yes to both, could you provide some links to such existing "equipment" as proof that it's not only "a nice theory"?

Answer

Sorry to say this, but it seems to be a long way off before truly turning a NON NFC into NFC phone (as pointed out by Izzy in comments, there have been some efforts but no progress)

  • NFC SD and SIM Cards claims that Both SIM and SD cards can be equipped with NFC chips can be used to enable.

  • Toshiba has come up with NFC SD card last year, but the catch is that it requires NFC enabled device to work with. All it does , is enabling seeing the contents of SD card without physical connection

  • NFC-enabled SIM cards launched a couple of months back in Singapore for paying for rail travel- but they work only with NFC enabled phones

wi fi - What is the functionality concept behind Wi-Fi sharing (aka Wi-Fi Profile share)?

Recent versions of Samsung devices (at least to my knowledge) are equipped with a rather unique feature called "WiFi Profile share" or just Wi-Fi Sharing.

My little understanding of this feature suggest that, a WiFi connection is "shared over WiFi" unlike traditional hotspot feature which shares mobile data (3g, 4g etc.)

I would like to know how this idea of rebroadcasting a WiFi connection works. In most desktop environments this is achieved through an implemenation of virtual wlan drivers, which then are used to rebroadcast/share a given connection through another SSID.

My question is how is this achieved in android through this feature (WiFi profile share)? Is a new interface apart from wlan0 created? Perhaps with Wi-Fi direct?

I understand it is not possible to have two concurrent wireless connections via the same interface (which is why WiFi functionality is disabled when mobile hospot is active)

The rationale of asking this question was that I wanted to achieve the same from my Android tablet to my beloved Symbian device (i.e Share Wi-Fi from my Android tablet to my Symbian device "over wi-fi" because the latter can't connect to captive portal wi-fi networks)

settings - Storage space and memory: mobile phone architecture versus PC architecture

On a PC, there are hard disks acting as storage space where the operating system and application files are stored, and there is RAM which is memory which gets used up by the operating system executable code and applications executable code while everything is running.

On my Samsung Galaxy SIII, when I go to Settings -> More -> Storage, there are various sections which talk about storage space and memory as though these were the same thing?

So here come my questions:

  1. Apart from storage space provided by the optional SD card which must be inserted into the back of the phone next to the SIM card, is there a single memory chip acting as both a storage medium for files when the device is turned off as well as random access memory for the running operating system executables and apps in execution? As the following screenshot reports there seem to be 16.00GB on my device used both as a hard disk and as RAM. Is this how this storage medium works, a single chip for both?

  2. Where can I see the amount of space available on my SIM card? According to Wikipedia such space can only be used to store specific kinds of data such as network-specific information, a maximum of 250 contacts (except for newer models) where each contact can only consist of a name and single phone number pair, and SMS messages. SIM card capacities are also limited to 32KB to 128KB or more, but in any case it's a very small amount of space. It could be that because of these limitations the Samsung Galaxy SIII and other modern Android phones do not make use of this space for user data, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for your replies.

Storage/Memory on the Samsung Galaxy SIII

Answer

In this respect, there is no difference between regular PC and Android.

The terminologies, however, is slightly confusing.

System memory refers to the storage space that is used by system files, and Device memory refers to all storage space. Device memory does not refer to RAM. Your device's RAM can be seen in Settings -> More -> Application Manager.

is there a single memory chip acting as both a storage medium for files when the device is turned off as well as random access memory for the running operating system executables and apps in execution?

Sort of. Most Android device uses a System-on-chip (SOC). What is included in a SOC varies depending on the particular chip and device, but a typical SOC may have CPU, RAM, GPU, wireless, and possibly storage manufactured in a single chip. In regular PC, these are usually separate components, SOC is used in mobile devices to save space wasted due to separate component packaging, but internally there is still a delineation between the components.

Where can I see the amount of space available on my SIM card?

AFAIK, you can't. Android have very limited support for SIM card facility. It uses the SIM card only for Telephony functions and importing existing contacts there into the device's address book.

applications - Rooted Phone but still can't uninstall Apps

So I finally temp-rooted my HTC Desire HD and set about trying to uninstall some of the stock apps that came with it (Stocks (no pun intended), Facebook for HTc and so on). But it won't let me - the 'Uninstall' link is disabled inside Settings-> Applications.

Do I need to do a 'full' root to achieve my goal or am I missing something?

Thanks for reading.

Answer

The Settings application doesn't let you uninstall system apps; it's got nothing to do with root. It doesn't check for root, or anything like that.

I recommend using Titanium Backup to remove system apps, it works wonderfully. I even had a regular app yesterday that the Market just couldn't uninstall for some reason, and TB took care of it.

How can I fix the GPS on my Samsung Galaxy S?

As has been well documented, the Galaxy S phones have terrible GPS functionality. It works for a minority, but it is slow/inaccurate for some and for others it just doesn't work at all. How can I fix this?

Answer

Four ways: Upgrading the software, fixing the hardware, resetting the GPS settings/data, and using "fake" GPS.

Samsung definitely released some bad GPS firmware, which does not help things. Fortunately, good code is included in all of the recent 2.2 updates. If you can, upgrade your software to 2.2. It has many advantages besides just the GPS!

You can also try flashing 2.3 GPS code (see this XDA thread). Apparently it's the best yet, and should work with any ROM.

Summary: Gingerbread great, Froyo good, Eclair bad.

Note: A minority of users have worse GPS performance after upgrading to Froyo. If you have the very latest Froyo update and this is true for you, I believe you can fix it by continuing with the other steps below (or the 2.3 GPS code above). You probably have bad GPS data and settings left over from Eclair, or perhaps it's just that your phone has been "cold started" and the GPS needs to collect some information about the nearby satellites first.

This might void your warranty, though if done properly it should be undetectable.

A major problem for many users is, yes, a hardware problem -- but not a GPS chip issue as some have claimed. I was reluctant to accept this myself, but after trying everything else I finally resorted to this fix, and it worked! The hardware has apparently been fixed in newer device versions, so if you bought your phone after October 2010 I recommend trying the other steps before doing this. But the good news is that it's easy to do. There's a detailed guide on XDA; here is the quick version:

  • Take off the back cover; remove the battery, SIM, and SD card.

  • Remove the 7 small screws in the back of the device, and carefully pry off the backing plastic.

  • You'll see 4 gold-ish contacts sticking out, approximately at each corner of the device. You'll notice that the backing plastic has 4 flat contacts on it, which are supposed to touch the ones on the device. (See the guide for details).

  • Slightly bend the contacts on the device upwards (a millimeter or so should be good, don't overdo it) so that they will contact the backing plate, like they were intended to. You might want to insert something like a small folded piece of paper under the contact, so that it doesn't bend back down.

  • Put everything back together, and continue with the next section.

This really voids your warranty, but seems like the best possible technical fix so far.

Problem is caused by bad gnd conductivity between mainboard and antenna. It is conduced by conductivity rubber. This kind of rubber was used for old nokia 8210 for connect display to mainboard. It was the mayor fault for nokia 8210.

There are 2 different methods which both require soldering skill but are said to significantly improve the GPS signal. Read more, see photos and a step by step guide on XDA.

  • Start up the phone, shut off GPS, and install GPSRestore (alternate non-Market link) and Captivate SGS Tools (don't worry, for our purposes it works for all SGS models).

  • Open the SGS Tools and, from the Secret Codes menu, go into GPS-Test and settings (LBSTestMode).

  • Hit Delete GPS Data.

  • Run GPSRestore. I suggest running it with GPS off first, letting step 2 fail, then going outside, turning GPS on and running it again. It may take 5+ minutes while your phone searches for satellites and figures out where it is. This "cold start" should prep your phone with good data, and future locks should be much quicker.

  • Once the test is done, you should be good to go!

I recommend only trying the following if your GPS is still slow or doesn't work after trying everything else; in most situations the default server is fine.

  • Go into SUPL/CP Settings (in LBSTestMode as above) and change Server to supl.google.com (port 7276).

  • Install GPSTest, go outside, turn on your GPS, and open the app. Wait for a lock; again, this might take some time.

Even the best GPS doesn't lock on instantly. You can use "assisted GPS", or aGPS, to help get a rough fix quickly while you wait for the more accurate GPS to get a lock; this only works when you have internet access, since it uses your IP address to locate you. Go into your device's GPS settings (Settings -> Location and security) and make sure Use wireless networks and Use sensor aiding are both checked. Use GPS satellites should, of course, be checked also.

Note: This might make things worse in situations where the phone relies on the inaccurate aGPS more than the "real" GPS. Experiment with and without it.

And that's it! I hope this guide works for you and you enjoy your newly functional GPS.

2.3 gingerbread - How to display my calendar on the lock screen?

What is the best way to show (non-interactive) widgets on the lock screen?

I have bought WidgetLocker, but it forces me to unlock the screen twice (using both WidgetLocker and native slider).

Answer

Lockscreen Calendar is a fairly lightweight app to display your next few upcoming events on your lockscreen.

Unfortunately, it does not currently support recurring events.

google play store - How can I buy an app that isn't supported on my (current) device?

As you may know, the official Android Market is in the process of having a sale, charging only 10 cents for a bunch of apps for 10 days. They're going to pick 10 new apps each day, so the apps for sale today won't be on sale tomorrow.

I am an OG Droid owner, and I'm one of the many who is waiting to pounce on the moment the Galaxy Nexus shows up in Verizon stores. I could have upgraded my phone weeks ago, but .. well.. you know how it is.

One of the apps on sale today (Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD) won't let me purchase it, because the Droid doesn't support it. But (hopefully) within a week I will have a phone that definitely supports this game. I don't even care if the game sucks; it's only 10 cents!

Is there any way I can buy the app anyway, so I can install it at a later date?

Answer

You can buy it on the Amazon android appstore. They have the same prices the Google Play. It just gives you a warning that you may be purchasing a game that does not work with your device.

and, as of today (Dec 11th 2011) its still $.10

htc one x - My HTC One X seems to be self destructing after Jelly Bean update

I upgraded to Jelly Bean on my AT&T HTC One X last month, and ever since then it's like my phone has just given up on life.

I had to upgrade through the installer package from the HTC Website and was walked through the process by HTC tech support.

Things that have been happening:

  • HD Widgets would stop working off and on, the widgets I've had on the screen would simply disappear

  • Tasker crashes constantly and profiles don't work. I have used this app on my last 2 phones as well as on the HTC One X since I got it back in Nov.

  • Swype is no longer my keyboard and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it back.

  • most importantly : My microphone quit working on phone calls. It still works on speakerphone, but no longer works normalls.

  • Other various weird happenings here and there. I swear it's like my phone is haunted or has become sentient and given up on life.

These are all apps I have used for a very long time and have never had issues with. At least 2 of them are very popular and respectable apps. (I would link to them, but Google Play is unfortunately blocked at work)

My phone is not rooted. I have not dropped my phone in water or even dropped it on the ground. Literally nothing major has changed in the past 2-3 months except the Jelly Bean update about a month ago.

If you need any more information to help me get pointed in the right direction to resolve my issues, please let me know.

Answer

If those problems started right away after the update: did the update process include a factory-reset? If not (and nothing else helps), this might be your chance:

Backup all things you can backup (luckily on JB that's not too big an issue, see Full Backup of non-rooted devices -- but I recommend to have all your apps into separate packages, as otherwise a full restore might bring back your problems). Then do a factory-reset.

Before restoring anything, check if your problems are gone. Then restore your apps one-by-one (just to make sure to not bring back the problem).

As for the backup process: check with Helium - App Sync and Backup, this is the easiest way to go. You can mark all your apps, make sure to check that .apk files are included (by default, Helium only backups data), and give it a go. Helium creates separate backup archives per-app, so you can restore them separately. Make a copy of the backup folder to your PC, just in case -- if restoring via Helium should fail for any reason, this still gives you the chance to use adb restore via USB.

Background: It might very well be that some settings got messed up on update. A will erase all your apps and data, plus the Dalvik-Cache (optimized app code -- this might be the culprit if it doesn't 100% match the new Android version), so all settings revert to "default". Your Android system ROM (JellyBean) will not be reverted to what you had before, so no worries for that :)

4.4 kitkat - Wifi and Data switching on automatically in my HTC Desire 820 device

This morning I got a notification on my HTC Desire 820 running Android 4.4.4, about update of 1.22 version for network. I thought it was normal and I updated it.

From then my device is turning on both Wi-Fi and Data automatically. Many times I tried to switch it off but it again turns on.

Answer

Even if such notifications look "official", they rarely are. They are specifically styled in a way to make them appear such, to betray people thinking that and tempt them to install the "stuff" behind. But one is more likely to install some malware that way, often a Trojan – like in your case: Its permanent switching on of network functionality suggests it's "phoning home", very likely transmitting personal data. A Google image search on "android malware installation popup" gives you some examples:

popup popup
browser popups wanting you to install an "update" (click images for larger variants

These candidates are easy to tell: you will never be informed on a system upgrade via browser popup, and there is no such thing like an update for your battery module coming this way (apart from which: the second screenshot proves its "fake-ness" by being a bad translation with grammar mistakes – another indicator to check for). A little protection can be gained from disabling "unknown sources" in your Android settings: that should keep installations from other than "official sources" (Playstore, your vendor) out. So if something claims to be an official update, but on installation you get told to enable "unknown sources" – be sure to cancel, as that's a fake and will almost for sure install malware.

But not all candidates are as easy to tell. Some even manage to place themselves as notifications in your notification area. A few rules on those:

  • official updates never come as "browser popups" on visiting some site. They are usually shipped as ota-update, or are to be installed via your device manufacturer's special tool (e.g. Samsung Kies)

  • if something tells you it has detected a "virus" – forget it, there is no virus for Android.

  • if unsure on its genuity: long-press the notification and check which app caused it. If it's an app that didn't come pre-installed: get rid of that app ASAP, it might do other evil things.

  • if you still cannot tell: ask in a forum where your device is dealt with, ask the manufacturer: is there an update deployed currently?

If you're already sitting in the mess (having that fake installed), the safest way out is a . You never can be sure where on your device the malware has spread. Hopefully it didn't manage to exploit some security hole and install itself as system app; if it did, the only thing to cure your device is a fresh firmware install.

How to capture screencast video and root not required?

I found a lot of solution to make a screencast on Android but each time the root is mandatory.

Does anyone have the solution without root?

Answer

If you're willing to use external hardware, one good option is an External HDMI capture card and a USB to HDMI cable.

For example a Blackmagic Design : UltraStudio Mini Recorder is only $145 for an HD-SDI and HDMI thunderbolt device, and a Micro USB to HDMI cable can go for as little as $10.

This way the recording does not affect the performance of your device or app. More expensive than an app on the device, but much more flexible.

rooting - How to check if a device can be made root-able

There are many similar questions to what I am asking, but from my searches so far have not pointed this out:

What keywords on the device advertisement or how can I tell prior to purchasing a device, if it can allow root access to applications?

For instance, is there a brand or a model, or even OS version, that comes with an "allows Switch User" application by default?

Is there a way for me to direct possible customers to "easily" check if a device can be made rootable...

Long story:

I built a device to help users without mobility to control an Android device. The users are usually illiterate, have no Internet access and have low resources.

My application requires root access, however, my users are very uninformed about technology, and thus I need some sort of pointer or something to help them purchase Android devices (currently, they send me an e-mail that they usually can only check/reply once every 3 weeks, then I check that product, and give yes/no replies to that device.... this scenario is not working out, and giving out lists with all possible/know devices is also troublesome, since most shops will sell an Android device, but will not be able to tell the client the model.

As an example, we had the D2212 Sony E3 model working (this was my local testing device)... but clients keep on asking if the "Sony one", "the black one", "the telephony dealership one", etc.

Answer

Rooting is not something endorsed by vendors (otherwise they would provide official instructions for doing this, or even ship the phones already rooted). Sony provides instructions to turn your device into a developer tool by unlocking the boot loader and changing the OS to a custom build. Motorola once offered the same. Also Nexus devices are friendly to rooting.

But in general there's no simple way to answer your question. Every user is on his own with this problem. Yes, I know this is disappointing.

Mount a folder from external sd as /data

How do I mount /mnt/sdcard/data as /data. Right now the /data has its own partition but it's too small (~500mb) and I would much rather give it more space than move apps and other things to my SD card.

My device is Micromax Canvas 2 A110.

It has a ~2GB internal sd card mounted at /mnt/sdcard2
and an external one at /mnt/sdcard and /sdcard
(I'm on some custom rom that switches internal and external default mount points like that)

I don't know what filesystem those are in.

Is there a way for me to download and install apps without actually getting a data plan?

Answer

You can always use sites like SlideMe.org, which "mirror" many Market apps and allow you to download them without registering your Android device. Beware of stolen apps, though (i.e. paid apps which are available for free). You can also use the Marketplace app with only a wireless router in range.

Default rotation direction for landscape apps

My device is Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android lollipop.

Some games run on a landscape mode and the top-side becomes left-hand side and bottom becomes right-hand side. Can I change this so that top goes right and bottom goes left? I don't want to rotate my phone every single time I run these apps.

Answer

You can easily achieve this by automation. I prefer MacroDroid Being easy to learn and free

To understand how MacroDroid works and the settings required for your Android version, see my answer

Your macro would look like this and you can tweak as you like

Trigger: Application Launched / Closed → Select your application

Action: Force Screen RotationForce Landscape (or) Force Landscape 180 (Screen shot below shows possible options)

samsung - Why can't I delete pictures I've sent in Google Hangouts in my gallery?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note III(3) and when I open my gallery there is a folder for each hangout conversation that contains images I have sent.

Is there a way to delete the pictures or folders from the gallery or at least have the gallery not synced with the Hangouts application?

Answer

You can delete the photos via the Google+ app or web interface. From the left-hand menu, click Photos. If you haven't turned on auto-upload and don't want to, click Not now to get rid of the prompts. Then, if you're in the app, open the menu that slides in from the left again, and choose Albums from the menu; or in the web interface, click More on the top, then Albums on that menu.

From there you can see the Hangout photos, listed separately from the 'real' photo albums. You can select and delete them to your heart's content. Note that "deleting" a photo from this view doesn't delete it right away: it moves it to the "Trash" or "Bin". To finish them off, you can find that on the same menu you were just on, or just wait for 60 days.

ram - High "unstability" of phone internal memory

Few days ago a problem appeared. With memory. I have phone with 8 GB internal storage and 64 GB external storage. I keep my photos, songs etc. on external storage of course. Applications are partially on internal and external memory. My phone is Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime powered by Android 4.4.4 (KitKat). It has a root. For a few months, free memory remained at the level of 700-600 MB. Not bad for Android. I know that the level of free memory may vary, but not as much as now. Yesterday the "diagrams of memory" began to jump on the gargantuan value. Only system memory remains the same. Used memory jumps from ~4,50 to almost 4,90 GB. Various files....it's not worth talking. Every second value varies in the range from 43 MB upwards. Several times the pointer took on unrealistic values such as an increase to 700 MB without free memory shrinking, another time memory decided to multiply magically so that the values of all the diagrams exceeded the total memory. Free memory jumped from 625 MB to 140 MB, next returned to ~600 MB and back to ~160 MB. Now it's varying in the range from 160 MB to 150 MB. Can I repair this without hard reset? Maybe it's a kind of memory leak and another bug.

PS. My phone doesn't slow down. And if it's necessary I can do hard reset.

Where to get or create an Android Lollipop iso for x64 environment?

My question is simular to this question about iso for x86.

I am looking to dual-boot my Lenovo Yoga 3 pro with Android L and I need an x64 iso. I can not use an x86 as it is not able to install to my hard disk partitioned with GPT. Where can I find an Andorid L x64 iso?

I am willing to try to create an iso on my own. Does anyone know how to do this?

Answer

To get Android Lollipop or another flavor of Android on your x64 laptop I recommend to use an Android disto called RemixOS. They have 64-bit support. There is another Android project called Phoenix OS that is similar but only x86.

When will my phone get the Android 2.2 update (FroYo)?

Android 2.2 (FroYo, short for "Frozen Yogurt") was released over the Summer 2010, however not all of the devices that will get this update have received it yet. Each manufacturer and carrier needs to add their custom modifications before it can be officially released.

This community wiki will list all of the known and rumored dates of upgrades for devices that shipped with a prior version of Android. If you have an update make sure to follow the format that's been established, and the following guidelines:

  1. Keep phones in alphabetical order listing the manufacturer and model

  2. Specify if the date is confirmed or rumored and link to the source

  3. If there is an unofficial release, link to the site where it can be downloaded

If you don't have a high enough reputation score to edit the wiki (currently 100), leave your suggestion in a comment or answer and someone will update the list.

screen - Is there a larger interface for older owners?

Does anyone know of a larger visual interface for older owners on android phones? It seems to me that most programmers haven't experienced over 40 eyesight. :-) Much less over 50, 60 etc.

Having an option for larger icons and text throughout the phone would be a fantastic. I know a slew of over 40 folks who are technically savvy but have to wear reader glasses to see the phone interface well.

Google Latitude History is telling me that I'm living on the next block

Today was looking over the statistics on Latitude history and I noticed that it registered another place as my home, it is actually one block away from the adress it says.

Is there a way to change or set my home's location manually?

Answer

You can manually set the location using an iGoogle gadget or through Firefox. What you are probably seeing when the location is "one block away" is that GPS is not actually turned on on the handset. The phone is probably using positioning that is determined used cell phone tower location, so it will get you in roughly the correct place, but not the exact location you would expect if GPS was turned on.

hardware - How can I make the button on my headphones control something other than the stock music player?

When I press this button, it plays/pauses the stock music player. I don't use the stock music player--I use a comination of Last.fm, Grooveshark, and Winamp. I would like to make the button play/pause whichever player I am currently using. If this isn't possible, I would like it to simply control Winamp, instead of the default player.

installation - Can I install Skype on my xperia?

I want to install Skype on my xperia x10 but I cannot find it in the market when I go to Skype.com/m and try to download it, I get the following message:

item not found

A friend of mine who has a Nokia C5 was able to install it.

How can I install it?

Answer

There are regional and phone network restrictions for Skype. They may well be different for Nokia phones than Android phones, and your friend may not be on the same phone network as you.

There (is now) one official Skype app in the Play Store, and one I know of that isn't in Play Store:

  • Skype on Three- Three UK customers only, follow directions on the linked page to get it

  • Skype - requires Android 2.1+, works on all phone networks (outside of the US) where your phone network allows it.

The above options for finding Skype in the Play Store only work if your country has its own Play Store, if your country currently uses the "Rest of the World" Store, then you won't be able to find Skype. According to Skype's FAQ, if this is the case then you should go to GetJar.com and download Skype from there.

Assuming you're not in a country/network that's blocking Skype then your problem may be the Android OS version on your phone, I think most Xperia x10's are still running Android 1.6 and the normal Skype app requires that you be running Android 2.1 or newer.

I think most countries have an Eclair (Android 2.1) upgrade for X10's, check what Android version your phone is running, and then find out if an upgrade is available.

4.2 jelly bean - Is there a way to speak "Send" in order to send an SMS?

I know I can pull up my SMS app and press the microphone to activate speech. I speak my message, but then I need to press the "send" button to actually send my message.

Is there a way to activate the send function by saying a keyword instead of pressing the button?

Coming from an iPhone where Siri does most of this for me, basically I can say

Tell my wife, I'm running a bit late.

Siri responds

Here's your message to wife's name, would you like me to send your message?

I say

Yes

and off it goes.

I'm looking for something similar in Android.

Answer

With Google Now/Voice Actions I don't think there's any way to do this. Some actions will happen automatically after a short delay ("note to self..." is one I know offhand; there may be others), but text messaging requires you to actually press the "Send" button on the card that pops up.

However, you could try a third-party app for these specific functions that you'd like to be completely hands-free. Dragon works a bit more closely to Siri, acting in a conversational manner, and will prompt you for a "Yes/No" to send a message in a very similar fashion. Skyvi is another option you could try, which will send text messages automatically after a 5 second delay (during which time you can press a "Cancel" button to stop the sending).

Android 6.0 drains my Nexus 5 battery within an hour

So. This morning I received the OTA update for Android 6.0 on my Nexus 5. Previously had no problems with battery usage, but after installing the update my battery is drained within an hour, without me using the phone in any way.

The settings indicate that the Android Core Apps are the cause of this and when I press the information icon in the top right it shows 'Contacts Storage'. I have to say that also since the update, my contact list is empty and keeps showing the message 'Contacts are being updated'.

Any clue on how to solve this issue?

Answer

I'm guessing this is being caused by a glitch in Google's sync services. This can be a difficult fix if there are more underlying problems, however clearing the system cache will likely fix the issue.

  1. Turn your device off.

  2. Press the power and volume down buttons at the same time for about 4 seconds. Release. A barebones menu should appear.

  3. Use the volume buttons to scroll to recovery.

  4. Open the recovery menu and press the power button for one second, then continue to hold the power button and press and hold the volume up button for 3 seconds. Release. This can be troublesome so if you have difficulty Google "Clear System Cache Nexus 5".

  5. Scroll to Clear System Cache or something resembling it. Be careful what you select as a lot of device wiping commands are in here.

  6. Let it go, then select "Reboot normally"

If that does not fix it, you may need to do a factory reset. You would stay on Marshmallow.

Official statement regarding call recording

I have been searching for a while and have not found any official statement about the call recording issue in Android (i.e. that it is not possible to reliably record calls on all phones). It may have the same lawsuit-fright induced reasons as a limitation of call recording in Google Voice (short notice here), but as mentioned, I could not find anything official.

2.2 froyo - What is causing music playback to stop/pause unexpectedly?

Moto DROID v1 Android 2.2.1

Is anyone else experiencing random music playback stopping/pausing on their handset? Do you know what is causing it, or how to prevent it?

I've been trying to get to the root of the issue, and I think it has to do with the music playback service. I've tried several apps (stock Music app, DoubleTwist, Cubed (3)). In each case the behavior is the same. Seemingly at random, and with now obvious trigger, music playback will pause/stop. I've seen this both with and without bluetooth, wifi, Last.FM scrobbling, and headphones. It does not correlate to notifications, as I get e-mail, text, and other notifications and playback continues. My music files are stored on the MicroSD card. Could this be due to latency in loading a portion of a file?

Answer

I believe I have resolved the issue by resetting my phone to factory defaults. After resetting to factory default, I am no longer experiencing the mysterious pauses when playing music.

My rev. 1 Moto DROID came loaded with Android 2.1. I ran the OTA update to 2.2, and then the OTA update to 2.2.1. In addition to the music playback issue, I was also experiencing extreme delays when displaying the launcher after the phone had been in a dock. I hadn't performed a factory reset since loading the two OTA updates, so I went through the factory reset process. The home screen now displays much, much more quickly when removing the phone from a dock, and I have not experienced the music pause issue.

Why are some contacts missing in some views after an android update followed by restoring the contacts?

Here is what happened: I upgraded my android version (to 2.1 on an Xperia X10 ), restored my contacts using the native apps. Some contacts are missing, but when I look at speed dial I can see some of the contacts. For example, I have contacts ABC and AYH: I see only AYH in phonebook but when I look at speed dials I see ABC also. I don t understand why is this happening. Am I, by any chance, not using an option to display all my contacts in phone book?

Possible Duplicate:
How can I remove unwanted app icons from the screen?

I have a Samsung GS3, and every few days new shortcuts show up on my home screen. How can I stop them from being added? I un-checked Play > Settings > Auto-Add Widgets and they still keep showing up. What is causing this?

Answer

Probably you have installed some non-reliable app, which is adding those annoying shortcuts in your home screen. I recommend you to install and make a scan with the free app TrustGo Ad Detector, and uninstall the app(s) under the behavior Create shortcut on home screen.

List of apps with undesired behaviors Suspicious App description

Also check out under the other behaviors for more suspicious apps and proceed as recommended. Note that some apps use legitimate mobile ad services, like Google's AdMob to monetize via ads, but they are listed under behaviors Leak identity info and Collect location , so just make sure you only uninstall (and avoid to install in the future) applications like online casino games, adult apps/games, and other which you distrust.

Keep making scans periodically (weekly or monthly) on your device to get rid of new potentially risky apps.

Nexus 7 tablet won't show files when connected to pc

Having read several threads, let me endeavour to outline the problem.

My computer: laptop running Win 7-64 bit
Tablet: Nexus 7 with latest update (which seems to have caused the problem)

Attempted solutions:
Uninstall the driver
* done this twice
* there are five driver files

* WpdMtpDr.dll (c:\windows\system32\drivers\umdf)
* winsub.sys (c:\windows\system32\drivers)
* wudfrd.sys (c:\windows\system32\drivers)
* WpdMtp.dll (c:\windows\system32)
* WpdMtpUS.dll (c:\windows\system32)
* attempting to delete the file winsub.sys results in a message saying permission is required from TrustedInstaller. I don't know what that is, nor how to get permission. So, while I have been able to uninstall the driver, I have not been able to delete it.

NOTE: wpdusb.sys is designated as obsolete by Microsoft

Restart the devices
* first thing tried - to no avail

Use different cables

* done - no effect

Connect through different USB ports
* done - no effect

Change the Storage and USB settings on the tablet
* accessing the menu in the upper right corner only gives "Help and Feedback" as an option. There's nothing about MTP (whatever that is)

Yell, scream and swear
* done - gave me a headache

The device worked properly before the last system update for the Nexus tablet. The device now connects to the PC, and is recognised as being connected. It simply does not display any files.

I am an author and use my tablet extensively for writing. It is important for me to be able to connect the tablet to the computer and move files between the two. Please do not suggest work-around solutions such as Drive or Dropbox. I prefer to have devices that work properly.

Thank you for taking time to read this through and consider the problem. Please let me know if there is additional information that would be useful. Also, please be aware that I am not a developer and do not understand the jargon or shortcuts used by developers. Please be explicit when suggesting a resolution.

When will my device get the Android 4.4 update (KitKat)?

Android 4.4 (KitKat) was officially announced on October 31, 2013.

(You can review the high level changes in KitKat at the official Android Developer's site or the announcement on the official Android blog.)

Of course, not all devices will get this update right away and others won't get it at all. Each manufacturer and carrier often choose to add their custom modifications which tend to delay the official release.

When will each device get Android 4.4, either officially or unofficially, if ever?

Can I have a folder (on the home screen) with more than the default amount allowed per folder on the Nexus 5, which is 16?

I'm searching a way to make all my games into a single folder. Is there a tweak/app/root command to makes my folders (not storage folders, folders in which you can add shortcuts for apps n' stuff) have, for exemple, multiple pages, kinda like in the IOS system, or a scroll-able folder? Or a way of having a folder in a folder (which would be overkill but hey, it's still a way to enhance the capacity of the folders.)?

I'm using a Nexus 5 running the stock ROM with Android 5.1.1. And I would prefer staying like that, not using Launchers or custom ROMs.

Thanks! ^.^

wi fi - Wifi connects for sometimes then disconnects and then never connects

Their is a big issue of WiFi in my phone when i first bought it...

My phone is a Spice Stellar Mi-439, Android KITKAT v4.4.2, 1GHz Processor, 512RAM, 4GB Internal, currently 16GB Expandable.

The problem is that Wifi connects when i switch ON the Wifi and enter the WiFi network but disconnects after sometime of browsing and never connects again even by switch the WiFi ON-OFF-ON and not even by disabling Data Connection. Neither it disconnects when in Sleep or StandBy Mode, it disconnects during browsing or any time. Whereas other users on that WiFi network don't complain about any issue like that. I have no control over that WiFi Network.

It only works when i reboot the set but again disconnects after sometime.

I didn't got any solution from internet for it.

Any knowledge about this issue?

cyanogenmod - How to install ClockworkMOD Recovery on Sony Xperia Neo V (MT11a)?

I have rooted my MT11a with UnlockRoot v2.4.2 and the "superuser" app has appeared. The tutorial said my phone should be requesting to upgrade 4.0.2.A.0.42 to another number ending in .62, but the Update Center says the phone is completely up to date. I should be getting the BusyBox after this update, but the update is not happening. Have I missed a step? The phone is working just fine. I downloaded the ROM Manager, and it is requesting to get "ClockworkMOD Recovery" in order to operate. All this I'm doing to get the cyanogen mod.

Answer

Probably the easiest way is to use x-Parts (formerly known as CWM Installer).

user interface - How does one use apps that place a menu on the system bar when the buttons are not in the screen?

I'm trying to use an app that places the hamburger menu on the system bar (with Home, Back, and Recent apps buttons). On devices that have a system bar (i.e., these buttons are on the screen), the menu is easily accessible. But now I'm trying to use the app on a device that has physical Home, Back, and Recent apps buttons. The system bar isn't shown, so the menu is apparently inaccessible (where it would be is off the screen). Is there a way to still access this menu when the system bar isn't shown?

Answer

I am not aware of Android solutions to this but here is a work around . This app Menu Button , it doesn't require root and creates a virtual menu bar to manipulate the settings for your app by creating Home , Back and Recents

OP has confirmed that it worked for them

Samsung Galaxy S3 doesn't mount external SD card

I've recently flashed the stock firmware onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 because there was one feature which didn't work on CyanogenMod. My external SD card worked fine until recently - the 'mount SD card' option in Settings is now grayed out, and whenever I insert the SD card into the device, the following messages appear in the logcat:

W/MountService( 3370): Failed to mount media on insertion
W/MountService( 3370): java.lang.NullPointerException
W/MountService( 3370): at com.android.server.MountService.doMountVolume(MountService.java:1212)

W/MountService( 3370): at com.android.server.MountService$6.run(MountService.java:1021)

My computer seems to recognise the SD card just fine. Can anyone help me with solving this problem?

Update 1: I was successful in mounting the SD card manually using the shell command from this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804573, however it was only accessible to apps with root permissions.

Update 2: As suggested in the comments section, I formatted the card in question to exFAT. The problem persists.

I fixed the problem just by flashing the stock firmware (using Odin) again. I didn't even have to wipe /data - all my apps are still there.

How to redirect complete outgoing phone's traffic to a proxy server?

How to redirect entire phone traffic (including all apps) to a proxy (with out rooting the phone)

We are developing a parental control app for Android, in that we have requirement to capture all out going traffic from Android phone for categorization. Is there a way to achieve this in Android with out rooting the phone.

Thanks, Gopi.

Answer

It sounds like you are describing a VPN (virtual private network). A VPN directs all traffic (whether http or other tcp/ip protocols) through a specific server, usually with the intent to encrypt traffic between the device and the VPN server.

However, encryption isn't necessary, and a VPN would have full control over routing, which means you could customize a VPN server to block specific requests. Or you could redirect requests to unsafe/undesirable websites to a 'block' page of your choosing.

Almost all android devices have VPN capabilities built-in. You should look into that technology. In order to force the user to go through the VPN, you will need an app that can be set as a device admin (a built-in, almost-root privilege that prevents the app from being removed) that would also set the VPN to be always on.

shell - learning then mastering and using Android for a Linux "guru" using the command line?

I am a 60-year old Linux guru: coding Bismon (documented here) and using and coding on Unix since 1987 (SunOS3.2) and Linux since 1993 (but I never used Windows, and very probably never will). Of course, I do like command line interfaces. My sight is not very good but did improve (I got cataract surgery a few months ago). BTW, I did contribute to GCC plugin system thru GCC MELT (an obsolete Lisp-like DSL -that I designed and implemented- to extend GCC)

For my 60 years birthday, my grown-up kids gave me a tablet: Huawei MediaPad M5 (Android 8) which I completed with a Logitech bluetooth physical keyboard.

I want to understand much more how Android works. Of course it runs a Linux kernel (so same syscalls(2)), with a strange bionic libc. I knew (and wrote a technical report - some internal survey document) the internals of JVM and JNI in 2001. I do know a bit of Java.

I don't have the time to study all the source code of the open source parts of Android. I probably would have the skills to do that, but not the motivation and time.

It seems that Android is using setuid & chroot techniques quite differently than usual Linux distributions do. Where is that documented? Apparently, each JVM (for every Android app) is running under its own uid.

I would like to be able to code small GPLv3+ applications for Android. What do I need to learn. I just did download the SDK tools for my Linux AMD2970 desktop.

What are the next steps? I know that Qt has been ported to Android and wish to code for it.

What would be the Android equivalent of the ALP book to code Android applications with both Java and C++ (Android NDK). Or where is the equivalent of section 3 of man pages for Android? I am considering cross-compiling musl-libc for my tablet.

I am afraid of rooting my brand new tablet (that could lost the warranty). I might be tempted to install some Debian-like thing on it within a year. Is that reasonable?

I might port SBCL to my tablet (if that is easy, which I don't know).

PS. I am a free software enthusiast.

crashes - Settings app: 'Unfortunately, Settings has stopped.'

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Cyanogenmod 11 11-20140225-SNAPSHOT-InstallerXNPQ09P-maguro Android 4.4.2 KitKat with CWM 6.0.4.7. It's a stable installer build.

For a while now I have been getting been getting a 'Unfortunately, Settings has stopped.' error, when trying to simply open Settings from the home screen or application drawer.

It also happens if I try to run the app (com.android.settings) in other ways such as opening a third-party keyboard's settings (which tries to open 'Language & input' within the Settings app).

I have tried the following things, to no avail:

  • Wipe Dalvik cache in CWM

  • 'wipe cache partition' in CWM

  • Fix permissions using the 'ROM manager' app

  • Did 'Clear data' for the Settings app (by dragging it to 'App info' on home screen)

  • Installed AROMA Filemanager in CWM, and, not finding anything to delete in /data/data/com.android.settings/cache/, but deleting /data/data/com.android.settings/shared_prefs/CMStats.xml

  • Botting into safe mode, where Settings app STILL crashes.

I will note that the Settings app still sits in the multitasking list, but when you try to open it from there it still gives the same crash error.

I'd like to try and avoid a factory reset if possible, so are there any steps I could try further before an entire factory reset?

Could it be having selected ART mode that eventually mucked up Settings somehow? If so perhaps I could turn it off manually via Terminal/adb and then reset Dalvik again or something?

Whatever it is, what troubleshooting steps could be done in addition to the ones above?

auto start - How can I prevent applications from running on startup?

Possible Duplicate:
How can I stop applications and services from running?

I've installed some applications that I mostly like, except for the fact that they all decided they were too important not to auto-start. None of them give me any option within the application to disable the auto-start "feature."

Can I stop these applications from auto-starting? And if so, how?

Note: My phone is not rooted, so I'm especially interested in solutions that do not require a rooted device, but all answers are welcome, even if they require rooting the device, since I may do this eventually.

Also note: I'd prefer not to fiddle around with clumsy auto-kill features in task-killer programs, as I've found them to be incredibly unreliable on my phone (Motorola Milestone/Droid).

battery - Do I have to charge my phone before I use it the first time?

When I got my last phone, a SE k850i, I was recommended to charge it fully once before I even turned it on. Does this apply today as well, for my coming HTC Desire HD?

Why was I recommended to do so in the first place?

Answer

All newer phones use Lithium polymer batteries.

Why is it Partially Charged?

To decrease their aging they are intended to be stored at 40% charge. This means when you receive your phone it should be at 40% charge, otherwise they will have aged your battery for you. (you are probably used to the effects of aging, like a 2 year old phone seeming to have very short battery life). When you get your phone you can use it until it is discharged, but they normally say 'charge it' because people will not notice the partial charge.

Do Not Fully Discharge

You should not fully worry about fully discharging, this is superstition to earlier battery technologies. Fully discharging a lithium battery is one of the best ways to make it fail. below a certain charge they will have their overcharge protection circuitry fail and you cannot charge it at all. I have seen studies that show that this makes up more than 75% of "failed" lithium batteries.

Lithium Battery Aging

Lithium batteries have a set number of charge discharge cycles before they fail. This might be a number like 500 cycles. You actually get more like 1000 cycles if you only discharge to 50% before recharge. Lithiums really do not like a deep discharge, I cannot stress this enough.

If you would like more information about lithium battery technology let me know, I can get you many links, just drop me a comment. I have a few answers on the electronics and robotics stack exchange about it.

Can I leave it plugged in all the time?

Yes, and no. This is very dependent on whom makes your device.

For example, my Lenovo laptop will not apply a charge to the battery unless it is under 97%. When it does charge the battery it charges directly to 100%, then stops until the battery sags below 97%. Many laptops did not do this, on most just applying charge if it is not 100%. This would put the battery through thousands of charge cycles in a week when you are not using the battery. This ages a battery quickly.

If your phone maker took the time and paid the extra cash then your phone will stop charging once it reaches full charge and just power the system from the wall outlet. It is significantly more likely that your phone is charging your battery on a short cycle and aging it thoroughly.

Myths

Some people have some confusion from some of the myths that go about. The primary one is memory. As Battery University will say, this is mostly extinct, and actually applies to nickel-cadmium batteries. As was stated in a comment about crystals Battery university has in reference to nickel-cadmium:

With memory, the crystals grow and conceal the active material from the electrolyte. In advanced stages, the sharp edges of the crystals penetrate the separator, causing high self-discharge or electrical short.

Now, talking about Lithium batteries, which your phone uses, there is even more difference. To quote them battery university directly from their simple guidelines:

Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.

I understand how this may go against what you have been taught, but I am someone who not only has researched this, but uses lithium batteries in my day to day work as an engineer.
