samsung galaxy s 3 - Block all incoming calls

I need to use internet, but without being able to be called. So basically just block all incoming calls.
I used to enable flight mode, but doing so, I'm not able to connect to the internet.

Is there an alternative?

Answer

Some Samsung devices have a feature called "Blocking Mode", which allows this. You can check if your phone has it from Phone -> Call settings -> My Device -> Blocking Mode -> Disable incoming calls.

download bigger than 4 gb file on android 4.0.4

How can I download files bigger than 4 GB on my Micromax A110 phone?

FAT32 file system says that it does not support files larger than 4 GB. I know there is one more way to do that: EXFAT file system. But my phone does not support that format -- so what should I do to download bigger files?

There are many games on sites which are not split into parts. Also torrent sites have many big games -- but I can't download them because they are larger than 4 GB.

So what should I do? And please tell me that when I format my sd card there are some other options like kilobytes 16 or 32 or many more. So which number of kilobytes should I select for my phone to format EXFAT file system?

samsung galaxy s 4 - Which baseband version is the official one for the 4.3

I am confused between the official version mentioned in sam mobile and the one my country offers. They are both 4.3 but one is I9500XXUEMJ8 and the other is I9500XXUEMJ5. So which is the most updated one. I would guess the J8 but then I also need to think which one is the latest one for the S4 I9500 (Octo Core).

I have also seen several ROMS offering either one or the other. Getting me more confused in the process.

cyanogenmod - how to use ext partition in my android?

I partitioned my MicroSD card and created 1GB ext3 partition.

  • What is the next step so I can use it to make the performance of my android better? It seems to me that it is mounted into /sd-ext

  • What are all the options I can use ext for?

CM7 on HTC Desire

Answer

As discussed, you can store apps on the ext3 partition which will free up internal phone memory. There are also apps like Swapper2 which allow you to put your swap file on the SD Card.

Be warned, that this will degrade the life of your SD Card and will also chew up battery due to frequent read/writes to the card. Weigh the potential of additional free space in view of this.

file system - What is the path where GoSMS stores the SMS messages

How say the title I can't find where the sms are stored. I see this similar question but the replies haven't helped me.

I have gosms and I want delete all messages, but if I do this option with gosms the app crashes because are a lot of messages (about 6000).

I found:

./data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/mmssms.db
./data/data/com.jb.gosms/databases/gommssms.db

But are too small files (a few kb) and with text reader I saw that they contained only some queries. Also when I deleted them if I open gosms I still see all messages. So what is the real path of sms?

Edit: After a reboot gosms can't find sms anymore, so my problem is solved ( though probably the real sms are still stored somewhere)

Answer

SMS messages are stored in data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db. If you can't see it in your root explorer (or it is to small), try rebooting your device or simply - connect your phone to the computer and copy that file (using e.g. ADB) on it and I'm sure you will be able to read it properly .

4.4 kitkat - Nexus 4 GPS uses mobile data even when data is turned off

My Nexus 4 running on Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) uses mobile data even when the mobile data is turned off, and I turn on the GPS. When the GPS is turned on I get the carrier message that data is used and the balance is reduced. Why is this happening?

Answer

Most phones use data downloaded from the cell network to speed up the initial position fix when you turn on GPS: without these data, it can take several minutes to first get the position, as the GPS receiver has to download all the ephemeris data (i.e. the latest updates/corrections about the satellites' orbits) via the low-bandwidth GPS connection.

Using the cell network to download these data only takes a few seconds, and then you can get a GPS fix right away if you have good visibility. It doesn't actually use the internet at all, which is why it's not affected by the mobile data setting, but since it does download data over your cellular connection, some carriers choose to bill for this as mobile data.

How do I keep audiobook separate from Google Music?

ebooks - How can I read my epub books in Google Books for Android?

Has anyone been able to take and place an epub book inside the Google Books app or know how to do it?

Answer

As of March 2013, Google Play Books supports third-party ePub or PDF files. You can upload books to your account by visiting https://play.google.com/books/uploads in your web browser (when logged in to your Google account, of course). You are permitted to store up to 1,000 uploaded files on your account at a time, and each file must be no larger than 50 MB in size.

There are also many alternative book reader apps that support ePub files if you would prefer that. Aldiko seems to be very well liked, but I have not used it myself.

I am using a Samsung Note 2 (N7100) running on root. I wanted to know where do google chrome browser save it's cache files? Similar to the desktop version [..\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Profile 1\Cache]

Thanks in advance!

custom roms - Unpack initramfs.cpio.gz (boot.img) from MTK6589 phone?

I can't find a proper tool to unpack boot.img from GravityMod2.

both unmkbootimg and split_bootimg.pl are able to extract same fileset (kernel, 4280320 bytes and ramdisk, 633284 bytes). I think the files are damaged (taken from wrong offsets?) - can't even find gzip/cpio signatures in ramdisk image!

Is there another specific tool to unpack Android 4.2.x boot.img, or MTK-specific tool maybe?

Answer

You can find proper tools to unpack boot, recovery, system and data images here: mtk-tools

Thread of the author on xda developers, thank him :)

Usage:

./unpack-MT65xx.pl boot.img
./repack-MT65xx.pl -boot boot.img

root access - How to make SELinux permissive on a Knox Samsung device?

I have a Samsung note 2014 which I rooted following this tutorial. However I now have problems with SELinux which (apparently) is preventing me from installing a Linux virtual box. I backed up and uninstalled KNOX using Titanium backup but still no success. When I type setenforce permissive in a terminal, if get no error message but when I type getenforce, I get "enforcing".

Is there any way I can change this? The device is running Android 4.3.

4.0 ice cream sandwich - My apps status suddenly become "not installed on the phone", even the google play store!

I have been searching online for problem similar to my case but unfortunately didn't manage to find any solution to my case.

INFO

Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100T
droid version 4.03

STORY

I didn't do anything, never took out the SD card, or rooting or factory reset whatsoever all this time and my phone was working fine. But then today suddenly when I reached out for my phone to read one whatsapp message, some kind of error message shown up and need me to close it I think. I can't really remember what its saying, not just for whatsapp but along with several other apps.

Then I restarted my phone, and found in my home screen several shortcut icons missing, some are still there but with android logo. So I went to the main menu and noticed all the apps are there but it became gray colored with the same icon (Android with SD text on right corner).

When I pressed the app a message saying the app is not installed on the phone.

Another important thing is that I am unable to locate the google play store anywhere, even under the Setting->Apps->All. Actually, I can't find all the missing applications -- though in main menu I saw the gray colored play store icon (not google play but play store)

I don't think the SD card is the problem since my music and images are still there just fine, not to mention a few games apps still working fine even though they are also stored in SD.

edit: Just now I tried to access google play store with internet browser on phone and tried to download the missing apps again but I can't, it gives the message your device already has this item. Even if I want to un-install the missing apps, I can't because I cannot locate them under Settings->Apps->All.

QUESTION

What do I need to do to fix this problem? I really have no idea since I am one that never really follows up with tech development of mobile phone, just take it and use it for granted.

installation - Is it possible to install Android on a PC?

Is it possible to install Android on a PC? If so, how would this be accomplished?

Answer

The HowToGeek has a set of instructions on how to Run Android on Your Netbook or Desktop here. It uses the Android builds from Android-x86.org but I don't know how active that project still is?

However if you just want to try Android out you're probably far better off just using the emulator on your PC.

documentation - Android Jelly Bean help or user manual

Can I get inline help with functionality in my Android device? For example, my good old Nokia had a help feature, with which after selecting an item for a few seconds, it used to display the description and purpose of the selected item.

If this is not possible, where can I find a Jelly Bean user manual or documentation?

Answer

When you first activate an Android phone, there is a short tutorial that walks you through the home screen, adding icons/widgets to the home screen, navigating the home screen, etc. On stock android, there is also a helpful widget on the homescreen.

For many phones, there is a small booklet (often called the manual) in the box when you purchase the device. These booklets can also be found online, for example some popular Android 4.0 devices: Galaxy Nexus user guide, or Galaxy S3, or HTC Incredible. You can find manuals for your device by browsing the manufacturer's website or googling for "(device name) manual" or "(device name) user guide".

Manufacturer websites also typically have a Knowledge Base, Support Center, etc. For instance, HTC Support Center for Desire X or Samsung Support for Galaxy Note.

Finally, there are also Android StackExchange and other Android-related forums which contain lots of helpful people willing to answer your questions. If you're still unclear on anything specific, ask away!

rom - Alldaymall A88s tablet popping up junk from PornClub. I have it rooted. Now what?

On eBay I picked up one of those cheap Chinese 7" Quad-Core AllDayMall A88s tablets for $25, WiFi-only.

enter image description here

When it comes on all is fine unless you try to open the browser. Then things start popping up that are quite unsavory. So I did a factory reset but it seems all that junk is built in.

I sure hope the kid's version doesn't have this firmware. There are some things you simply cannot un-see. Perhaps the pink ones are different.

Going into settings, apps, I was able to identify and stop a lot of it. But as soon as I opened the browser it went nuts showing more.

I got the unit to tell me to sideload a file via the menu that comes up when you hold down-volume and power. Cool. Following somebody's advice I installed the Android SDK to do it. But then found out that all I needed was the ADB Platform Tools with adb.exe. (Don't need the SDK at all it turns out)

So I plugged it into my Win7 machine which installed an Alcatel driver for it. I could see it in device manager.

Typing

adb device -l

gave me a long number then the word sideload (instead of the name of the device)

Pushing on, I found out for positive certain that it needs Alldaymall-A88X-android 4.4.2-bsf.rar and thought I was on a roll.
All I had to do was download the file, unRAR it to get the ROM image, then refresh the ROM with the command it was asking for:

adb sideload Alldaymall-A888x-etc-etc

-- But no, the download link is to a dropbox account that says not found.

It can easily be set to receive a sideload. Driver installed and working. Daemon program installed and working on the PC to handle the work. Necessary file identified. Seemed like a slam dunk. But no. Not available. Dead End. Lots of smoke but no fire.

Switching gears, I used the Windows version of one-click KingoRoot which said it succeeded. Went to the play store to get Kingo SuperUser and a good file explorer so I can seek and destroy.

During the process of setting up for Play Store it wants to log in, so I let it connect to WiFi. Big mistake. I never even got to the part of credentials with Google. Pop-ups on every screen and unresponsive touch panel. OK, reboot.

I installed a mouse via an adapter into the USB port but it worked the same as the screen. Just fine. Until it didn't.

Rebooted; Shut off WiFi then with the stock file explorer I went into the DCIM directory and under Camera there were a bunch of porn photos and a video, which I successfully deleted.

I am not sure how to find the built-in junkware so I can remove it.

I made some headway but this has taken hours. So now I turn to Android Stack Exchange to get some expert opinions. You can see that I have done my homework before asking for help.

Last thing to do tonight is to uninstall the SDK.

The question is in the title: Now what?

Answer

After rooting it and getting most of the software stopped it settled down a lot.

Google browser came up without incident.

A couple of coupons came on screen which closed when I clicked on the little x in the corner.

But then, as soon as I tried to get logged into Play Store it froze up and put a white low-res band across the bottom that said EXIT on the left, with a large low-res X on the right. At first I just waited then tried again, but no mouse action would make it do anything.

When I hit the X on the bottom banner, it rebooted and restarted all the bloatware again...

After several rounds of this I tore it apart and removed the Lithium battery so I could just throw it in the trash.

Then, having learned about KingoRoot, I downloaded it into my good RCA Viking Pro, and rooted it successfully.

Downloaded the SuperUser browser which is nice, dual pane.

Then as I browsed around I wanted to see system text files so I downloaded QuickEdit for that. It works well.

Then I downloaded the Qute SU Console and it would handle simple commands like pwd and ls and such. It even included a bash editor which allowed simple scripts to work. There was no sudo command so I couldn't change most of the system from read-only to writeable. Maybe that is just the nature of ROM.

Manipulating things on the sd card is easy, of course.

Downloaded a VIM program which worked.

So this hasn't been a total waste. It was a learning experience.

Meanwhile, the answer to "what now?" has turned out to be to use Google and learn all I can - and throw the darn thing away. It is absolutely worthless. I suppose I got $25 worth of learning out of the experience so it isn't a total loss. Chin up and all that.

Now I need to figure out how to dispose of the 2200ma Lithium battery. I live out in the desert and am tempted to start a campfire and use it for fireworks, but perhaps the recycling center is better for the environment.

Thank you for the comments along the way.

Cheers!

Screen goes off as soon I dial or receive a call. CyanogenMod 7.1- stable

In stable mod 7.1, I am facing this problems. I don't know if its a bug or what, please help me out.

My screen goes off as soon I dial or receive a call. After that I am unable to end the call as it never wakes up. Pressing the power button has no effect..

The problem is not just related to ending the calls. I am unable to do anything on my phone as it never wakes up. Then I have to either pull off the battery and restart the phone or plug in the charger to wake it up. It never happened on stock ROM so no hardware problem. I checked the solution for this problem and it was "It seems to be the screen protector is at fault. CM7.1 doesn't play nice with it. I just cut a hole where the proximity sensor is and it basically fixed it. " But IMHO if the proximity sensor does not work properly with cyanogenMod then why does the power button also stop responding.

But if they are related then can you guys please tell me with an image where the proximity sensor is located on a Defy? So that I may try the other solution (cutting the screen protector).

wi fi - Wifi auto rejoin issues on Nexus 5 / Android 4.4

Here's a problem I've been experiencing with my new Nexus 5:

I leave my home wifi (which I was connected to). I then go to work where there is a wifi network I've previously joined. However, my Nexus 5 won't automatically rejoin the work wifi. If I go to the wifi menu and try to tell it to connect.... it does nothing. It sees the network and says it has a good strong signal, but it simply won't connect to it. If I turn airplane mode on and off (or restart the phone), it will join the work wifi.

Same thing happens in reverse (leave work wifi, won't auto rejoin home wifi). Or if I just walk out of range of the wifi network and walk back into range of it.

I did not have this issue on Android 4.2.2 with my Galaxy Nexus.

Is there a way to fix this? Or is it some sort of software bug in Android 4.4?

Answer

It appears that this was an issue from Google's syncing of wifi profiles from older phones. For some reason, when my new Nexus 5 acquired the wifi profiles from my Galaxy Nexus, they exhibit this issue.

The solution here worked but you must be rooted. You must delete all the wifi profile data (requires root) and then re-join the wifi networks again.

adb shell
$ su

# rm -r /data/misc/wifi/
# reboot

Then rejoin your wifi networks in the wifi manager. When you leave the range of the wifi and come back, it should reconnect as normal.

terminal - Running own executable on Android shell

I need a specific command line tool and I have made a C program in my Linux shell. I have compiled the program with an ARM cross-compiler. I have then moved the program into the Android file system and tried to run it.

The output is permission denied.

What do I have to do, in order to run my own compiled programs in Android file system?

applications - How can I install apps from unknown sources using my Google account on the web?

I was wondering whether or not I can somehow remotely install applications from "unknown sources" i.e not having to copy the .apk file onto my device and then installing.

For example, using the Google Playstore on the web, I can manage all my apps using a browser on my laptop or pc. However those are in-store apps. How would I go about installing out-side the store apps remotely on my device using Google account (if that's even possible), or perhaps any other way without having to physically connect my device or having the .apk on my device.

Note *Since it obviously isn't possible to do it from the playstore using a browser as it only allows playstore apps to be installed, any app would do. *

Answer

If your device is rooted, you can create Install Job in SureMDM.

Step 2: Install Mobile agent here.
Step 3: Login to Web admin console here.
Step 4: Click on Jobs on Utility panel.
Step 5: New Job > Android > Install program > Job name > Local File path.

Step 7: You can verify the status of Install Job in the System Log.
It works

Titanium Backup "insufficient free storage space" error

Because of my external SD card issue, I thought I should factory reset my phone then reinstall the firmware on it. Before I'd do that though, I'd have to back up my apps and their data so that I can restore it afterwards. For that purpose, I had been relying on Titanium Backup Pro, so I entered the app, changed the backup directory to /storage/emulated/legacy/TitaniumBackup (as the external SD card was unavailable) and attempted to backup all user apps and system data. A progress dialogue appeared and was stuck at 0% for about 30 seconds until it close and Titanium Backup displayed the notification 'Batch backup interrupted: Insufficient free storage space' despite having 7 gigabytes left on /storage/emulated/legacy.

I tried searching on Google for a solution - the only one that came up was to remove /data/app/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex but the file did not exist on my end. How can I fix this issue?

Clarification: My copy of Titanium Backup is a Pro version activated by a Pro key obtained from the Google Play store. There is no need for any external patchers, cracks or keygens.

Nexus 4 problems when charging

My Nexus 4 is not charging when plugged into wall but it charges when connected to PC USB. When plugged into wall nothing happens, the battery icon shows nothing.
This problem appears and disappears randomly. Few weeks ago I had this problem, then it disappeared and now it reappeared again.

I tried to enable and disable MTP and PTP but didn't solve it.
I tried to use the wall charger on other devices and it wors (sometimes work also on this device)
I tried to plug it in different places and it doesn't work. I tried to move the cable to check if contacts are good and nothing happens. I tried different USB cables and the behavior is the same.

What can I do?

EDIT: The issue is temporarily solved. Here's what happened:

  • The device was charging only from PC

  • I plugged it to PC and the charge was 11%

  • I came back after less than 10 minutes: the device was off and pretty hot

  • I turned it on and the charge was 1%. The icon said "charging" but it seemed to charge very slowly

  • I turned it off.

  • I unplugged it.

  • I replugged it to PC: it was charging.

  • I unplugged it and I plugged it to wall charger. It was charging.

  • Initially the battery monitor reported AC, however after some minutes believed that the phone was connected to USB mode.

  • The phone charged very slowly.

OTHER INFOS: Today I was run out of battery and I plugged the cable.

  • The battery was 18% but in few minutes went down to 4% (I was gaming with a poker game but it went down too fast as it was short circuited)

  • The device has shut down automatically

  • The device was warm

  • After rebooting it I saw the battery charging but a red exclamation mark was blinking

  • The red led (which turn on when it's charging) was noisy.

  • The system was extremely slow also when I tried to check the battery manager.

  • It was not charging. Sometimes a "flash" was on the battery sign but the manager reported "not charging". Another battery manager reported 38mA and then 0 (as if battery was not working).

  • I cooled it down with a fan and it seem to start charging but very slowly (from 1% to 4% in 15 minutes)

  • I shut it down and after 10 minutes I turned on again and it was 12%. Then it seems to charge properly (from 12% to 14% in a couple of minutes and current was 34mA), but after some seconds current went down to 9mA and then to 0.

battery status

Click on picture for larger version

Soon after this screenshot it seemed to start charging better, current was more than 200mA, but as soon as I took a screenshot it went down to few mA and then 0 again.

Another update:

Today I plugged the cable when battery was 29%. During the day I checked current usage, it was fine with an average of 200mA. When I plugged the cable (either via USB or from charger) the current usage went up to 1A, again with red exclamation mark, warming etc. I don't know what I should do now.

enter image description here

Click on picture for larger version

NOTE: it's not a short circuit in the Nexus pins because if I plug the cable in it but I don't plug the other end, nothing happens.

UPDATE: I tried to plug the phone to other USB ports and it works with higher probability. Sometimes the problem appears also in the other USB ports, but less frequently. However the charging current is only 200mA, which doesn't seem correct, in my opinion. Sometimes the phone appears to be in discharge while plugged via USB. I download a CPU monitor to check if the dicharge was due to high CPU load and I verified that when I plug USB the CPU load increases near 100%, see image:

CPU load

Click on picture for larger version

From 19:26.03 to 19:28.49 the phone was plugged to the first USB port, then I plugged it to another port (CPU went down to zero) and the I plugged it again into the first port.

The process which consumes high CPU is system_server.

cyanogenmod - RAW camera and Lollipop

One of the selling points of Lollipop was that it will now support shooting in "Raw" mode, so that you can get the raw sensor data and then process it on the computer.

I just installed CM12.1 on my Samsung S3.

Will my phone support "Raw" shots in the future (My camera app doesn't support it yet) or does it require specialized hardware and I shouldn't even count on it being supported in an old phone?

Is there a non-app tool for batch backup of APK files?

Just as the other times, an answer to my question shall not contemplate an app from either the Play Store, or any other source. What I'm after, is a tool capable to backup user apps, system apps or both those categories, when launched from within a working Android OS.

Backing up the apps' external data is not relevant. The only thing that counts, is the ability to batch backup the base.apk file, found in each /data/app/appName/ directory, in order for me to be able to reinstall it either in order to revert to a previous version, or to install it from scratch.

Lastly, I would prefer for the tool to be freely customizable (e.g. not compiled). Maybe something like a shell script?

file system - How to make bind-mounted (mount -o bind) folders visible for non-root users?

I want to mount-bind an app data folder in /data/data/... to a user subfolder in order to automatically synchronize the contents for backup purposes. As root I use the following command:

mount -o bind /data/data/org.blabla.app/database/ /storage/emulated/0/blabla_database

The command seems to work and I can access the files in the mounted folder as long as I am root. However, as soon as I exit root, the files become invisible and the bind-mounted folder is empty.

How can I make the files visible for non-root users so that my sync app can access the files for backup?

I tried to find a solution on google but i got more confused by the given solutions on google. I tried a data recovery software(Dr Drone for android) but the software is not able to recover data from those devices which are running on >Android version 4.2. Technical team of Dr Drone for android want me to root the device but because of complications in the rooting process i don't want to root my device.

Is there any way to recover them?

mtp - Marshmallow USB connection type

I just flashed the Android 6 Image to my Nexus 7 (2013) LTE a few minutes ago. It was a clean flash, so I copied my files over to my PC.
When I plugged it in after it booted, Windows detects it, installs the drivers automatically and shows the device in My Computer. From it's icon, It's in MTP mode. But when I open it, I can't see the usual "Internet Storage" disk that lets me access my files. The device shows a blank folder.
I searched the Settings app for "MTP" & "PTP" but found nothing. (Unlike in Lollipop) In the "Storage & USB" section also, there is no mention of a USB connection other than in the title.
I can't swipe down the notification area while the device is plugged in because the screen is broken (I use a mouse)

What might be my problem?
PS: The device has an unlocked bootloader so I can edit system files.

Thanks.

Answer

Go into Developer options, and cycle the USB host mode, the files will show up on my PC.

security - How can I remove trusted CAs on Android?

From the current fallout around DigiNotar (in short, a Root Certificate Authority that has been hacked, fake HTTPS certificates issued, MITM attacks very likely), there are some parts concerning Android (see yesterday's interim report in PDF):

  • fraudulent certificates for *.android.com has been generated (which would include market.android.com)

  • there may be other such fraudulent certificates signed by this CA in the wild (currently nobody knows for sure, one way or the other)

  • this could happen to another CA in the future (Comodo had a similar problem a few months ago)

So, how do I remove a CA I no longer trust from my Android phone? (I have root and CM6 on my specific phone, if that's relevant)

Answer

Lookout Mobile has blogged about this due to the DigiNotar events, and provided some pretty good (read: lengthy) instructions which you can find here.

The gist of it is that you need to pull /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks and then remove the CAs from the store, then push the store back to the device and reboot. Their instructions require that you have Bouncy Castle (for decrypting the store), root access, and a working adb connection. I'm not sure if this applies to all versions of Android or not, but my guess would be that the location of the CA store hasn't changed in quite some time (if ever).

4.4 kitkat - Even with WiFi turned off it is still the biggest battery drainer (S5 Mini)

I have a Samsung S5 Mini and today I noticed that even when WiFi is off, it is still the biggest battery drainer (oscillates between 20-23%). I also noticed that yesterday the battery drain was much higher than it usually is.

I have disabled everything that makes use of WiFi, tried rebooting the phone, but It remains the same.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be, and how can I disable WiFi effectively?

Screenshot of battery stats

Answer

Navigate to Settings -> WiFi -> Advanced (under the context menu) and ensure that Scanning always available is not checked. This feature 'Let's Google location service and other apps scan for networks, even when WiFi is off'.

This is most likely the cause of the battery drain. To further reduce WiFi battery use, you could change the Keep WiFi on during sleep option to Only when plugged in or Never. However, this may prevent you from receiving emails, messages and similar notifications while the device is locked.

battery life - STAMINA / Ultra STAMINA mode on Marshmallow?

Since the update to Marshmallow, I can't find the STAMINA or Ultra STAMINA modes in the options or app drawer.

While there now is a option that seems to do a equivalent of the STAMINA mode, I presume it have been superseded by Android itself, but what about Ultra STAMINA?

The device I use is a XPeria Z3C, which should be equivalent to a XPeria Z3.

Answer

Stamina Mode removed in Marshmallow

Sony announced in their beta rollout for Marshmallow

The Marshmallow version of Android has its own smart solution for managing power consumption (Doze and App Standby). These functions are integrated directly into Android 6.0, which made Stamina mode redundant. In other words, Stamina mode was removed from M.

However, Stamina Mode is considered better than Doze mode ( for details see earlier link) :

  • Doze mode requires your phone to be geographically stationary (ie. sitting on a desk and not in your pocket).

  • Doze mode can only be interrupted by high priority GCM messages. Your favorite app’s developer didn’t set a notification as high priority? Too bad, you have to wait until the next maintanence window to be notified.

  • Doze mode’s white-list does not truly exempt an app from all restrictions.

  • Doze mode cannot be disabled. Having issues with notifications on Android 6.0? Too bad.

Stamina and Ultra Stamina Mode Return

Stamina Mode users resentment at this perhaps forced Sony to reconsider and Stamina Mode and Ultra Stamina Mode have been announced as below:

Not as good as original Modes

But the Stamina Mode is said to be a watered down version and is more akin to stock Android Power Saving mode ( mainly because whitelisting of apps isn't possible):

Presumably, Sony felt immense pressure from customers who wanted STAMINA back, but also did not want to break Google’s terms and conditions for using Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Quite where Sony will go now with their device software remains to be seen, but as it stands, the new STAMINA mode is simply not as effective or as usable as the old way.

As of now I haven't come across any mention of Stamina or Ultra Stamina Mode in Android 7

Allow only specific apps to use cell data, only when on 3G

I use Tasker to sync every 30 mins when on 3G. I'm on a limited data plan, and the only apps I use constantly are browser, a Twitter app (Echofon) and Whatsapp. Is there a way to allow only these apps when on cell data, and allow access to all on wifi, either with Tasker or otherwise?

I've seen similar questions here, but they're mostly outdated (pre ICS) and/or involve restricting access using DroidWall, which does not differentiate wifi and 3G.

4.4 kitkat - Nexus 5 > Lollipop upgrade notification lost

I have an LG Nexus 5 and I am running Android 4.4.4 on it.

I've been seeing a notification telling me there's an upgrade for my Android OS for several weeks now (Lollipop upgrade), but I've been waiting till I properly back up my phone before starting the upgrade.

When I was finally ready to run the upgrade yesterday, the notification was gone. I went to Settings > About phone > System updates, clicked on "Check for update" only to find it saying "Your system is up to date".

The "Last checked for update at" message was changed to the current time.

Rebooting the phone and trying again did not help either.

Is there anyway I can get that Lollipop update back?

rooting - How to use AT commands in Android by 'root' the phone

We have various Android devices from Spike, Samsung, Micromax, etc. How can we issue AT commands from Android to the modem? We searched in Google Play but did not find any app related to this.

This Stack Overflow question suggests:

[F]irst you have to root the phone...`

How can we do this?

Answer

The question you linked to has the information you need to access the modem. You might also find this SO answer helpful for accessing the modem. Be warned that the device file you need to use is different for each model of phone, so you'll have to examine /dev on each device to find out which file to use.

As it points out, you need to be root to do this. The rooting process is different for each model of phone. For most models, you have to wipe the phone to achieve it, as the process involves unlocking the bootloader (and maybe flashing a custom recovery) in order to flash the su binary into the system image. Some models have security vulnerabilities you can exploit with a program you download, to achieve this without unlocking the bootloader. How do I root my Android device? explains more about the process, and has an index of questions about rooting particular devices.

default applications - How do you clear share actions bound to ‘copy to clipboard’?

I accidentally set a sharing intent to always copy to clipboard. I know that usually to unbind these defaults, you go Settings > Apps > All > [bound app] and hit the 'Clear defaults' button from there, but I've had a look at all the system- or text-related things in there and I can't find anything with such a default set.

In my googling, I found this thread on XDA Developers that describes exactly this problem, but it has no responses.

If it matters, the action in question is the one the Github app uses to share issues.

Answer

There are multiple ways to clear "default actions":

  • Walking through the list of apps in Settings→Apps→Manage Apps, looking at each entry whether it has a "Clear defaults" button, and hit that (not very user-friendly -- and in this special case obviously not applyable, as the action seems not bound to a special app)

  • Using a helper app like e.g. Default App Manager or DefaultApp Reset (much more user-friendly -- but not suitable in this case, for the same reason as the previous point)

  • Installing another app which uses the same intent (in case of a "homescreen launcher" and the "home" key, another launcher, to give an example) -- not always easy to figure out what app might be fitting for this purpose. This is what lead to success in our case here, by installing Andmade Share
Note: You do not need to keep that app installed. It's the installation of the app which "drops" the default. This is also the purpose why the next item works:

  • Updating/uninstalling one of the apps currently using this intent (to take above example: that's why you will be asked again when your launcher received an update) -- this point just for completeness :)

battery - YouTube app holds a long wakelock. What app settings can I change to keep it from doing this?

I am using an HTC Evo 4g with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. I'm trying to deal with apps which keep my phone from entering sleep mode, and the YouTube app is a major offender. With downloaded apps, usually the fix is to remove the app and find an alternative app that doesn't suck the battery dry. But I want to keep YouTube enabled so I can watch YouTube videos.

What settings for the YouTube app can I change to get it to not hold a wake lock for hours on end? Are there any device settings that I can change to help?

So far I have disabled "Preload subscriptions", "Preload watch later", "Improve YouTube", and "Notifications" in the YouTube app's settings, but the wake lock still occurs.

Installed CWM/TWRP but it isn't installed when booting to recovery mode

I have an LG G2-D800 running 4.4.2 KitKat and it is rooted using an app called Stump Root. I have been trying to flash a new ROM onto it and every time it boots into recovery, it boots into the android recovery, even though I have flashed it using Clockwork Mod and TWRP Manager. Can anyone help with this and suggest good ROMs to flash to it?

contacts - Is it somehow possible to change MANUALLY the format of a telephone number?

In this question Is it somehow possible to change the format of a telephone number being displayed ? @Edelcom asked to change the format of telephone numbers, but he could get his wanted format just by changing his language. By manually I mean that I want to set it up no matter the language such as the format I want isn't in any of the languages I speak.

By the way: my phone is a Samsung Galaxy i5510.

external sd - Is the class rating of my MicroSD card relevant?

Does Class 4 perform differently from Class 6, and so on, when it comes to Micro SD(HC) memory cards on smartphones? Samsung Galaxy S to be specific.

Answer

The general consensus seems to be that a Class 4 is just fine, and you definitely would not need anything faster than a Class 6. Unless you're seeing a lot of lag during IO intensive operations, though, I wouldn't be worried. The best way to test might be to take a few minutes of 720p video. If it records and plays back fine — and it should — you should be good for anything. Since L3 video at 1080p is just over 5.5 MB/s, a class 6 card is sufficient. The Galaxy S II only takes 1080p video at up to 3 MB/s, and I don't know of any phone at the moment that takes higher-quality videos.

Note that the Galaxy S uses the internal SD storage for most things (possibly including video; not sure if you can choose the save location). So the external SD card may in fact be irrelevant most of the time. I've had my Galaxy S nearly a year and used the external SD card approximately twice.

If you're copying large files onto the SD card, it will obviously take less time if the class rating of the card is higher. This might happen on file transfers from the computer, or 4G downloads with low network usage, but not during general use.

security - Where can I configure SELinux in Cyanogenmod 10.1.3?

Cyanogenmod released the stable version 10.1.3 yesterday and it apparently includes SELinux enhancements running in permissive mode per default.

I thought that you could change the mode in the settings, but so far I have not found anything.

Is this possible at all using the graphical touch interface?

Answer

Go to Settings -> About phone menu and scroll all the way to the bottom: enter image description here

Tap the "SELinux status" menu 3 times in a row in a quick succession. This will bring up a prompt asking you to confirm enabling the other modes:
enter image description here

Be aware that currently this feature is still under heavy development, and isn't supported on all devices yet.

Does a battery with more capacity last proportionally longer?

I recently bought a Galaxy S2 which came with a 1650mAh battery and in a near future the manufacturer will be offering another one with a 2000mAh. My question is: will it last 21% more than the original? Is this just as linear as it seems or is not the case?

rooting - Root N1 and keep the official ROM

Is it possible root my N1 with 2.3.3 without flashing custom ROM?

Answer

Yes. According to this XDA thread, you can unlock the bootloader with fastboot and then flash only a custom recovery. The custom recovery will allow you to put su on your device.

You could also flash a stock 2.3.3 ROM that has been altered slightly (i.e., pre-rooted). For example, this one over at XDA.

Getting double message notifications after replacing Talk with Hangouts

I've updated Google Talk to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)". Now whenever I get a message, I receive two notifications: one from the new Hangouts app and the other from the old Talk app. How do I disable the notification from Talk?

Device is Samsung Galaxy S II running Android 4.1.2.

Answer

As Izzy pointed out in the comments, the package name of Hangouts is the same as the one for Google Talk: com.google.android.talk. Therefore, even if Talk was built in to your ROM, it should be 'overlaid' by Hangouts.

However, it's possible that there's some Google Talk service that didn't get killed by the upgrade process. If that's the case, a simple reboot should solve the problem.

wi fi - Is there a way to copy files directly between two Android devices on the same wifi network?

I now have a Samsung Galaxy S Android phone running Froyo 2.2.1 and an Archos 101 Android tablet - also running Froyo.

Both are 'connected' to the same home network via wifi.

Is there a method by which I can copy files directly between the two devices using Wifi?

Bluetooth is also an option, but since I want to copy a lot of thumbnail images, I think this is too slow.

UPDATE

The solution I choose:

I managed to copy files using the ftp protocal , using swiFTP as ftp server on my Archos table, and using Ghost Commander on my Samsung phone.

If you want to try something similar: you might look at my comments to the accepted answer on my other question: question about a 550 error I received during my initial ftp testing in order to see what I had to do to make it running.

Answer

There seems to be multiple options available. With a relevant internet search there is an application called Bump which shares files by simply bumping both devices together. I'm not sure if it does it over wifi if available or only does it over 3G.

There is another option where you can set up an ftp server on the device using an application called SwiFTP which is not being maintained anymore but the last update was June 2010. You can install this on one device and use ES File Explorer on the other device to compress and upload the file it using the FTP option.

A third option would be use Hoccer which probably uses their service as dropbox does, though I can't be 100% sure.

I'd personally recommend the ftp solution since that seems the most straight forward and you get to ensure that you have a direct connection.

google play store - Application stuck in "Installing..." stage in Market

I'm having the problem mentioned in the title on my Samsung Galaxy S. I updated the app Dock Simulator and for some reason it got stuck while installing. Now it shows the scrolling green bar in the downloads section of the market but the program itself works fine. How can I get rid of the constant "Installing..." status?

Oh yeah, reboot and uninstall didn't fix anything.

Answer

I just had this problem, and somehow I got this solved.

What I did:

  • Entered Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications.

  • Selected the Market app, and "uninstall updates".

After that, I entered the Market app again, and I was able to reinstall the app who got stucked.

PS: I'm not sure if this was just a coincidence, or this procedure works always, but it worked for me. PS2: My Android version is actually in portuguese language, so I'm not sure the option names I referred to above are correct in english.

geolocation - I'm getting frequent inaccurate location as the same location, can I make this stop?

My wife and I are both having this occur frequently, with the primary issue it brings up being that we often find ourselves getting directions to our desired location or searches for things nearby oriented in Mascoutah, IL when we are in fact about 45 miles away from there.

I have an LG G3 running Android 5.0 and she has an LG G4 running Android 5.0.

I'd like to figure out how to make this stop occurring, or at least occur significantly less. I would have blamed WiFi locations, but I'm including a few screenshots of three different days of mine that show it is very unlikely I'm hitting a WiFi consistently with that location.

Route 1 to work.

Route 2 to work.

Stayed within 10 min of home.

4.2 jelly bean - Open Web Page in Browser (not on SD card)

My question is similar to this one, but my HTML file and resources are not on an SD card, as my phone does not accept SD cards. It is currently at file:///Download/AnotherFolder/here.html. I have resources like images and javascript in a subfolder. How can I run this is in a browser, preferably Chrome? Just entering file:///Download/AnotherFolder/here.html does not work in Chrome.

Answer

Is it in the internal SD card? Try file://mnt/sdcard/Download/AnotherFolder/here.html.

battery - Why is charging from computer using USB slower than using an outlet?

And what is roughly the ratio of the charging speed in USB vs charger? My phone is Samsung Galaxy S, if that matters.

Answer

A computer USB port is limited to 500 milliamperes (or 900 mA for a USB 3.0 port). The dedicated wall charger, on the other hand, is usually able to provide 1000 mA or more.

Let's take the case where a connected phone uses 200 mA. Then, the USB port would have 300 mA left to charge the battery while the wall USB charger would have 800 mA left. A typical smart phone battery has a capacity of about 1500 mAh (milliamperes-hour) nowadays. This means that in a perfectly efficient world, a current of 1500 mA would charge the battery in 1 hour. So the same battery would then charge in 5 hours over the USB 2.0 port and in about 1h50 with the wall charger.

Of course in reality power losses would also affect charging times but these numbers are quite close to what I get with my actual phone.

applications - Where are the .apk files of currently installed apps stored on my Android device?

Possible Duplicate:
Where in the file system are applications installed?

How can I view the .apk files of currenly installed apps on my android phone?

Answer

Use a file manager to look in the following locations:

  1. /data/app

  2. /data/app-private

  3. /system/app/

  4. /sdcard/.android_secure (shows .asec files, not .apks)
    On Samsung phones: /sdcard/external_sd/.android_secure

You need to be rooted to view the first three.

Why are apps excluded from Titanium Backup?

I have been using CM Browser for couple of years. A couple of months ago I set Titanium Backup ( Pro - version 7.5.0) to backup on schedule as shown below ( 3 as maximum backup versions ):

Screenshot

After the last update of CM Browser, which I didn't like, I uninstalled it, being sure I could switch to the earlier version. Surprisingly, I didn't find CM Browser backup !

To doubly verify, I installed CM again and took a manual backup (by force-running the schedule) and sure enough it didn't show up – despite of the "backup completed" toast being shown (no error message in between either). And yes, I've verified that I didn't have any filters set that might be hiding it.

It can't be a version issue of Titanium as the previous version should have retained 3 backups.

Why is this so? What makes apps "unbackable" ? How do I fix this?

Device: Moto X Play, 6.0.1, stock, rooted

Edit:

  1. As suggested by Izzy in comments, searched the backup directory and found backups of Browser. Installing the apk from there got me my old Browser version but minus the bookmarks ( Data for apkalways included in preferences).Backup of newer version also present in apk

  2. Mailed the developer. Will post updates but meanwhile ideas to troubleshoot are welcome

Edit 2: when I took a logcat for the second time (in the process of installing app and forcing a backup), TiBu mysteriously decided to show me CM Browser with all previous versions and data intact. I haven't the faintest idea and will post an answer if the developer clarifies. I have mailed him the logcat. Pastebin here

You are welcome to post your answers

samsung - Captive Portal detection causing phones to disconnect from Wi-Fi in intranet environment

Hello Android Enthusiasts!

I am the manager of an Internet Cafe on a cruise ship, and we're being plagued by a persistent problem that I can't quite solve.

We have a wireless network throughout the ship which can be used to access the Internet, but also includes a local intranet through which guests can view the daily events schedule, check their account, and use a free internal messaging service.

The issue we are running into seems to be with Captive Portal detection, and from my observations it appears to be affecting only Samsung phones (might just be S4 and higher), and has been observed on every OS from 4.2.2 and up. What happens is that they connect to the wireless network, and are then told that sign-in is required. A captive portal window will pop up, which does bring up our home page. If they then connect to the Internet, no problem. But if they just want to use the intranet, or if it takes them too long to fill out the user registration form, they get told that the network has been disconnected and we have to start over again from "sign-in is required."

I've done quite a bit of searching online for answers, and one is that the user must select "use network as is" from the captive portal options, but I see this option on very few devices. Other options have involved rooting the phone and running some terminal commands, which is obviously not something I can ask the guests to do.

We posed the issue to our shoreside networking team, and they came back saying they had whitelisted the following URLs and that this should fix the problem:

clients3.google.com/

apple.com/library/test/

captive.apple.com

connectivitycheck.android.com

connectivitycheck.gstatic.com

connectivitycheck.android.com/generate_204

clients3.google.com/generate_204

android.clients.google.com

It did not, phones are still being disconnected after about a minute if no Internet connection is made.

Is there anything else we can try? We are ultimately looking for a fix that won't require our users to do anything special.

automation - Trigger actions on notification received with IFTTT

IFTTT has a notifications channel but unfortunately it does not contain any triggers.

Is there any other way to perform an action when a notification is received? Is there any IFTTT service that can capture notifications and send them to IFTTT?
How can I use an incoming notification as trigger in IFTTT?

I don't see any reason why IFTTT can't be one of those notification manager applications.

Answer

You can use the Android Device IFTTT service:

https://ifttt.com/android_device

It has "Notification received from specific app" trigger where you can filter the Notification by app name and notification keyword.

Please beware that the keyword must be a whole word. Trigger won't be fired if you filter "receive" and the notification is "sms received". You must use "received" as a keyword to catch that notification.

The service also has "Notification received" trigger, that fires for all android notifications.

rooting - How can I control my Azpen Android Tablet with a broken screen without root or usb debugging?

I've had this Azpen A700 tablet for a while, but at some point it got the touchscreen broken. I can still see an image but the touchscreen is completely unresponsive. I'd like to still get some use out of it, but it is not rooted and it has USB debugging disabled. Is there any way to control it or root it without the touch interface? I have a USB cable for it, it's just that the USB debugging setting is turned off.

I've tried googling how to control an android tablet with a usb cable and it requires rooting. Then I looked up how to root a device and it requires usb debugging. Is it possible to do it without rooting or debugging?

Answer

You could get a USB-OTG cable, which allows you to connect USB devices to Android devices via the USB port (so long as the Android device supports OTG, which the A700 does). If you plug in a mouse you'll get a mouse cursor to work with; you could even use a USB hub to attach both a keyboard and a mouse if you want to type instead of using the on-screen keyboard.

You could also use the USB-OTG cable long enough to pair a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard to the tablet, then go wireless.

settings - How can I configure my phone for MMS?

I can not send or receive MMS-messages (containing an image) on my Nexus One phone. And I can't find many settings to set for it.

I have set an adress for APN. But there is also an IP-address, a proxieaddress and a port number that I should set.

How do I set up MMS on Nexus One?

Answer

You will need your operator's APN details (hint: ask the operator's customer service or search on Google), which you can enter through Settings > Tap "Wireless & network settings" > Tap "Mobile networks" > Tap "Access Point Names" > Press "Menu Button" > Tap "New APN" (eclair/2.1).

Alternatively, many operators can send a special service message that will automatically configure the correct APN settings. You might need to contact your operator's customer service or send an SMS/text message to a special number before they send you the autoconfigure service message.

2.2 froyo - Google account on HTC desire & galaxy tab

just got my new shiny galaxy tab out of the box and am attempting to add the same google account i have setup on my HTC desire. after entering my username and pass, i am given the worded picture that i have to type in(you know the bot check) After i put it in, it says please wait for 2 seconds, and gives me another worded picutre. I've done this 100 times at least, so i couldn't have got it wrong everytime.

is there a reason for why i cannot get past this step? I'm going crazy here!

htc dream - Why can't I boot into recovery mode?

I think I'm actually missing something here still. Everything I read suggests I need to boot into recovery mode as a first step, and that I ought to be able to do that by holding down the "home" key while I'm starting up. Instead I get a bang (!) in a triangle icon with a phone next to it.

Have I skipped a step or is there something wrong with my phone? I know there's something wrong with my phone ... that's why I embarked on this project to begin with. But could that be some how preventing me from booting to recovery mode? Or is the problem a skipped step?

Answer

Edit: Apparently download and recovery modes are merged for the G1. Just press Alt-L on your physical keyboard while in Download mode, and Recovery will show up.

What you're seeing is Download Mode. The key combination is usually subtly different. In the case of my phone, it's just a matter of having the phone connected to USB or not. You should try it with and without USB, as well as removing the battery and doing a fresh boot. (You can also remove the battery, plug into USB, and reinsert the battery and try). Also try other keys -- you already know using Back instead gets you to that device info screen.

adb - Data recovery from android device with broken screen

I have an android phone (BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition, which I have flashed with the Android firmware for the E4.5 - this is an Android phone, it is not running Ubuntu anymore). I recently broke this phone - the screen does not work, neither the capacitive touch layer of the screen nor the LCD layer of the screen work. However I believe the rest of the hardware to be otherwise impaired.

USB debugging on this phone is not enabled. As I understand it, if I am to recover data from this phone I must enable the USB debugging. I believe this can be done via adb, or perhaps fastboot?

Note: I can use either a ubuntu linux OS or Mac OS X to attempt to recover data from this phone. Currently I have tried installing the Android Studio Software on these 2 computers/OS's and used adb devices to detect my phone, however the device has failed to be detected.

To be perfectly honest I am slightly lost here. I considered buying a usb to hdmi cable, but I have no idea if my device supports this hardware, and even if it did, the capacitive touch layer of the screen is still broken, so I would be unable to control my phone via the screen...

Therefore I think the most sensible option is to try and use adb(?) to enable USB debugging, and then use some other software to copy data from my android device to one of my computers.

I think the best course of action is to ask what are the next steps I should try to recover the photos/videos/documents from my phone? I am fairly familiar with ubuntu/linux, but I'm certainly not an expert with Android!

What are the next steps I should take to attempt to recover data from my phone/enable USB debugging?

Colornote 3.9.82 SD card backup .dat files are not recognized after Android refresh

I backed up all my files on the SD card (Nexus 4) and refreshed my Android. I then reinstalled Colornote and placed the files (.DAT files) in the same directory (data\colornote\backup), but the files don't show up in Colornote backup.

Now in the Colornote FAQ they talk about 'SD card backup', but this option is not available in the Colornote settings. I use the latest version on Android. I already mailed Colornote about this, but no reply for weeks. Does anybody know how I can do the 'SD card backup' in the latest version?

wi fi - how to fix grey wifi icon (no internet), and how to track what caused that?

[SUSPENDED. see P.S. at end, any good way to deal with this suspended state?]

My phone have the grey wifi-icon problem, where you do not have access to internet.
Yesterday it was working fine, I changed nothing.
Usually it always connected grey and a few moments later it gets colored, but now it is forever grey...

I followed these tips from other questions that did not work:

  • turn wifi-off/on

  • turn air-plane mode on, wait 1min, turn it off (and wifi on)

  • forget/remove the wifi config and recreate it

  • reboot the phone

  • reboot wireless router

  • shutdown the phone

  • (NO) I got a tip to lower my router security from TKIP+AES to only TKIP, but it was working perfectly yesterday; so I will not do that for obvious reasons..

I can ping my phone from my PC.

I can JuiceSSH from my android into PC (intranet is ok).
I can do nothing internet related...

My phone is not rooted, should I?
My connection drops from time to time when I see "obtaining ip address" if I leave it on the wifi config page, but it was like that already before the grey icon problem..

Where I can see wifi log to try to understand what is happening?

PS.: my phone is working again, I did nothing either to fix it; my PC was connecting to internet while my phone not... now both are ok; I will keep the question as the problem may happen again and I wasnt able to track what caused and how to fix (if ever possible); just that it is not urgent for now... thx!

factory reset - Should I format /sdcard and /data if I want to wipe all personal data with Cyanogenmod?

I'm trying to completely wipe all personal data from my Nexus 4 with CM installed. I've seen different advice on different sites for making sure all my data is gone:

  1. Just do 'Factory Reset'.

  2. Do 'Factory Reset' at least 3 times.

  3. Do 'Factory Reset' and wipe dalvik cache.

  4. ...

and so on... I'm interested in erasing all traces of my personal data from the device. It's a Nexus 4, so there is no removable storage to worry about.

My guess would be to 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition' in the main recovery menu. In the mount/storage menu, I would choose 'format /cache', 'format /data', and 'format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)'. Finally, in the advanced menu, I would choose 'wipe dalvik cache'.

Is this thorough enough? Should I also choose 'format /system', 'format /firmware', etc? Are there any options I should steer clear from? I would like the phone to boot to a fresh Cyanogenmod after clearing all data.

Answer

Just do 'Factory Reset'.

Well, this depends upon the recovery you're using. If you're using TWRP (assuming you've v2.8.4.x or above), choosing Factory Reset would remove everything under /data (excluding /data/media which serves as emulated storage available through /sdcard as internal SD card), would wipe cache partition, and since davik cache gets stored either in cache or data partition, it would already be wiped out.

If you're using stock Android recovery (<3e>) and choose Factory Reset, then it would format the data partition and cache partition. Davik and internal SD card would also be automatically taken care of by formatting.

If you're using Cyanogen recovery or any other recovery, then I can't comment. I can only suggest switching to TWRP for better control and features.

Do 'Factory Reset' at least 3 times.
Do 'Factory Reset' and wipe dalvik cache.

You only do it one time and that's all you need to do. As I said, a factory reset automatically wipes cache partition so you need not to explicitly wipe it. TWRP notes:

[You] need to [factory reset] and you only need to do it once, not three times as some people would lead you to believe.

As for,

I'm interested in erasing all traces of my personal data from the device

Wiping the partition wouldn't be enough if you're talking about erasing all traces of personal data. There are already Q&A discussed about that on this site, so I'm referring them to you:

Note that if the phone would remain with you after a factory reset/ full data+cache wipe then it is not worth the time engaging in addressing "traces of personal data" since resurrecting deleted data requires physical access to your device.

Are there any options I should steer clear from? I would like the phone to boot to a fresh CyanogenMod after clearing all data.

Yes, please stay away from anything other than /data, /data/media and /cache. System partition doesn't contain personal data and when you would flash your ROM the partition would automatically be flashed because modern ROMs (such as CyanogenMod) do that. Modem partition is mounted at /firmware so it is not worth wiping it out because that may only cause trouble for you.

2.2 froyo - Questions regarding receiving 3G calls on my IDEOS

My Android device is 3G capable, but does not have a front-facing camera. I am on a 3G network and I don't see any "video call" option in contacts. I'm wondering if I will be able to receive video calls so that I can just see them or maybe show my primary camera (back of the phone; the only camera) to them?

Also, if that was possible, can I toggle the camera off/on DURING the 3g call? And does "data packet" need to be enabled to receive 3G calls?

EDIT: My device is Huawei IDEOS u8150 running Android 2.2 and if 3G video calls are not supported, can I find some custom ROM suitable for mine that can do this with the existing camera or some other workaround?

Answer

You will not be able to receive a 3G video call from another phone, assuming what you are looking for is the operator backed 3G-324M solution that is available on most 3G phones (not including iPhone or Android). 3G-324M as a solution doesn't run over IP and requires a tighter integration between operating system, modem and application. What are the features that Motoblur has that vanilla Android does not have?

What are the features that Motoblur has that vanilla Android does not have?

Answer

Motoblur has a bunch of widget-based applications which bring your social networks and/or emails together for ease of viewing, as well as weather, rss feeds and other simple UI elements/widgets that can come in handy. However, Motoblur keeps a process running in the background for each service (type of widget) and thus many people (myself included) forego it and install a non-Motoblur ROM to conserve RAM, CPU and battery. But if you are an avid user of social networking sites then it is a good choice and worth the battery drain.

Disable touchscreen in Android x86?

I'm running a triple-boot between Android, Ubuntu, and Windows. My computer has a bad touchscreen that is randomly clicking certain areas of the screen, and I want to know if it's possible to disable the touchscreen driver. I have Android set up to boot via grub2. (Note that I never attempted to install Android on the machine itself, I installed it to a USB drive on virtualbox then copied the android system folder to Ubuntu's partition, then modified my 40_custom file so I can boot Android.)

The Android version I'm running is 5.1. I installed this because Android 6 didn't seem to boot in Virtualbox so I thought it probably wouldn't boot on my PC. (Apparently it seemed to softlock on boot inside Virtualbox.)

5.1 lollipop - how do I enable 180 degree screen rotation on Moto G (3rd gen)?

how do I enable 180 degree screen rotation on Moto G (3rd gen)?

Portrait is default
Landscape rotates the screen by 90 degrees

but is there a way to enable auto rotate for 180 degrees (upside down/reverse portrait) without root access

Answer

Use Rotation - Orientation Manager (7-day trial). It allows you to set the orientation per app or globally. "Reverse Portrait" is what you're looking for in terms of 180 degree.

Alternatively, for my Paranoid ROM (AOSP; Android 5.1), using I can enter on PC:

adb shell settings put system user_rotation 2

It achieves the same goal.

wi fi - Remove out of range networks on Android 6

Having issues removing 2 old out of range wifi networks on android 6 - Samsung Galaxy S5 - Corporate phone, therefore Looking for an UNROOTED option.

  • Stock settings wont offer the "forget" option

  • Resetting all network settings through "backup and reset" has no effect.

  • 3rd party apps dont work

  • Creating a similar SSID on my router will only create a duplicate...

Using Saved networks → select the network to forget, I was able to delete all but 2 networks that actually have NO "forget" option, just showing security details and "cancel". Seems to be related to the Android 6 platform only allowing the original application that created the network the right to modify or delete networks. Source

Also see this reference for context, which doesn't help since it requires root:

How do I "forget" an out-of-range Wi-Fi network on a Galaxy S7?

Out of options at this point. Any ideas?

Mobile to PC skype video chat?

I have tried to no end, but Skype for Android doesn't support video chat (unless someone leaked a new version that i haven't seen yet), and I cannot find another video chat app that will connect with Skype contacts. As per the title, I am looking for an app that will allow me to video call from my phone to someone using Skype on their computer. Does anyone know of such an app?

UPDATE: I didn't realize it needed specification, but it does turn out Skype supports video calling for some devices:

Requirements Android 2.1 operating system and above Video calling supported on the following handsets: Samsung Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro

So to revise my question, is there an app that allows the HTC EVO to video call from phone to pc?

Answer

This article describes the next release of Skype for Android (v. 2.1) which now supports 17 phones on video chat. The answer before was directing to other services or modified versions of Skype, but this is official, so i thought i'd post it.

nexus 5 - Battery percentages per app nowhere near total

when I look at my Nexus 5 with android 5.1. battery screen, I can see something like this:

Screenshot Screenshot
Screenshots (click images for larger variants)

Sum of all per-app percentages in list is 10. However as you can see, there is 60% battery consumed (40% remaining). So, what is the deal here? Who consumed 50% battery? Or what do the percentages next to apps mean?

As you can see, screen was on just for few short times, the same for awake, and yet battery life about 18 hours? I dont get it.

Also, I found this issue reported on AOSP, but noone from google seems to care: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=80131

cyanogenmod - How to delete duplicate SMS?

After unlucky using some SMS backup tool I have the duplicates of all my SMS. So question is which way better to delete them.

Answer

Have you tried BackupSMS . It claims to remove duplicates. I've not tried it personally.

Make sure you take backup before trying it.

backup - What is the relation between ROM Manager, ClockworkMod and Nandroid? Which one(s) do I need?

So I understand the first thing I need to do with my phone, after rooting, is to back everything up. But I was confused about 3 of the apparently popular tools used for this.

For example, is Nandroid an application I run on a computer connected to the Android device, or on the device itself?

I understand ClockworkMod is a "custom recovery". What does that mean? Why do I need it? What does it mean to "flash" it?

Asides from browsing and installing new ROMs, how does ROM manager interact with the other two? Does it include them both, so I just need to download it from the market and be done with it?

I will appreciate any answer that can sort out the differences, with emphasis on what I, as an end-user, actually need to do, and whether there is any risk on those actions.

Answer

A "Recovery" is a special space in the internal memory of your phone, set aside by the manufacturer to perform diagnostics and OS upgrades. In Windows terms, it's a rough equivalent of Boot Menu (usually accessed by pressing F8 during boot-up.) It's invisible to the phone under normal operation, and is accessed in a special way (usually by turning the phone on while holding one or more buttons).

The problem is that the recoveries that comes with stock devices do not allow for installation of custom ROMs, only firmware images "signed" by the manufacturer. In order to install custom ROMs (e.g. CyanogenMod for example) you will need to replace the stock Recovery image with a custom one, made by community developers. On Android there are several custom recoveries, Clockworkmod (CWM) and Amon-Ra being the most known ones. These custom Recoveries allow you to do a lot more things with your phone. The biggest advantage is being able to flash unsigned custom ROMs. Other benefits include various tools and utilities for further managing the phones.

One such utility is called "NANDroid". It's a backup and restore tool that allows you to take a full image of all the phone's internal NAND memory (hence the name) and store it on your SD Card. Should something go wrong with the phone's software, you can use the previously saved backup to restore the phone to a working state.

The maker of ClockworkMod Recovery also created an Android app called "ROM Manager". This app allows you to easily upgrade the CWM recovery to a new version when one becomes available for your device. It also allows you to manage NANDroid backups stored on the SD Card, as well as perform a slew of other useful advanced tasks. These include fixing app/data permissions, re-partitioning of the SD Card right on the phone, downloading different custom ROMs and flashing them directly from the app. A paid "Premium" version of the app has more advanced features, such as OTA update notifications for custom ROMs that support it, etc.
