Separate user accounts on one Android device

I just bought a Samsung Note 2. My mom uses it when we are in India, but I use it when we are in the U.S. Is there a way to have two separate accounts so that our apps don't get mixed up? I'd like to have a completely separate set of app pages and saved data (eg. so I can have a different WhatsApp account on the same device than my mom).

Answer

There are a few options available, but the effective ones I came up with will require root access. And the second option may require an unlocked bootloader (I'm not sure if the Note 2 can unlock its bootloader or not).

Even if you have the most recent version of Android, Google has not enabled multiple users for phones; they figure people share tablets, but have their own phone. And there are some issues that come with multiple users on a phone.

Specific app profiles (root required)

There are apps such as Titanium Backup that let you create profiles for apps, and it works on any version of Android. You select the apps that you want to be multi-user. Then you add a widget to your homescreen that lets you choose which user you want to switch to. Titanium Backup will then back up the data for the current user and restore the backup data for the user you select.

If you're worried about one user getting text messages, you'll either have to insert a different SIM for each user (and thus change the phone to a new number), or set up each person with a Google Voice number. Then, have the Google Voice app be set up with multiple profiles.

Full Nandroid backup/restore - most effective (root required)

If you root it and install a custom recovery, such as ClockWorkMod (cwm) or TWRP, it would be a very simple process. Just do a full backup of the phone, then do a factory reset. Give the phone to your Mom, and she can set it up like her own phone.

Once she gives the phone back to you, do a full nandroid backup again in the recovery, then recover your own image. This will clear all her data (except anything stored on the SD card, such as images and other files) and restore your own. After you boot up the phone, it will be like she never touched it.

Huawei Ascend P1 is sending SMS automatically everyday

I bought a Huawei Ascend P1 and installed some apps. But for the past 3-4 days, I see an alert that an SMS has been sent and 1.50 INR has been deducted. How will it unlock and send an SMS?

I found from my mobile carrier that the SMS was sent to the same number. The following apps have the SEND_SMS permission, but I am confused because most of them are system apps, and a few like WhatsApp & True Caller are trusted. I really don't understand what's going on as I see that the questions related to this topic seem different.

cellular radio - My phone is not connecting to the cell network (No Service)

I have an Android KitKat based phone. For over a week the phone is getting poor (at times) or no reception but the WiFi and bluetooth is working.

There is a cross near where the range is shown and I get "No Service" in the notification. This screenshot summarizes my situation:

enter image description here

Here is a list of things I tried to do, but did not solve the problem:

  1. Get a new duplicate sim card.

  2. Use a working SIM card from a different service provider.

  3. Switch to 2G mode and back.

  4. Reset my phone.

  5. Completely flash the stock ROM again.

  6. Flash several modems from XDA.

Edit: Even if it is a hardware issue, is it possible to get some debug information? Like for example, somewhere in the kernel logs, it should be possible to know for sure what is happening, right? What and were to look for this information?

Edit2: Device is Lenovo P780, ROW (not chinese) per OP clarification

samsung galaxy s - Can I install Darky ROM using CWM even if I'm not coming from a previous Darky ROM?

I want to install Darky ROM to replace my stock Gingerbread phone.

Can I do this without Odin, using CWM, or will that only work if I have a previous version of Darky?

Answer

If you have a working CWM or 2e recovery you can flash Darky's with it just fine from a stock ROM. If you have a lagfix, particularly the ext2 OCLF, be sure to undo it first. (It appears Darky's uses the Voodoo ext4 lagfix, so no need to disable Voodoo beforehand. See Is the Voodoo lagfix compatible with Darky's ROM?)

Note that your data will be wiped unless you're already using Darky's, as per the XDA thread.

insufficient memory - Getting "Storage space running out" message in Galaxy S4; *#9900# does not show any menu

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. I am getting the "Storage space running out" error message in my notifications bar, and some applications have quit working or updating. None of the usual solutions I've read about elsewhere on the site have helped me.

IMG:

The most common solution to this problem is to access a hidden menu by dialing *#9900#. When I try this, however, the menu does not appear:

IMG:

Another common solution is to root the phone and delete /data/logs. Looking at what's taking up so much space on my phone, it does seem likely to me that the problem is my phone has lots of accumulated log files that aren't being deleted. I would rather not root my phone, however. I am happy with the functionality my phone has, even with bloatware and tied to my provider, and I don't want to take the time to root my phone for this one problem if I don't have to. =P

Finally, a third option I've read is to delete apps that are taking up a lot of space. I've attached a few screenshots below showing how my phone is using up space, though, and I believe that they show that my real problem is that there's something my OS is doing wrong, perhaps creating a lot of log files and not deleting them to save space. (Besides that, I've already tried deleting some apps I don't use often. The overwhelming majority of my apps don't take up much space at all, and the biggest space-wasters are also the apps I use the most and the reasons I have a smartphone.)

Is there another way for me to get back more storage space without rooting my phone?

If necessary, I'm willing to plug my phone into my computer and use developer tools to resolve this issue.

Here are a couple images showing that the biggest gain I could get for storage would be to delete some system files (which is why I'm guessing that the problem is accumulated log files). I have over 6GB that my phone categorizes as "Miscellaneous files:"

IMG:

And of the files my Android includes in that category, over 6GB are generic "System memory" (again, I'm guessing logs) that, unfortunately, I can't interact with or delete from this menu:

How to regain control over a Samsung Galaxy S II with a Boot loop?

My device is in a wicked boot loop and I cannot get any control over the phone.

If I take the battery out and put it back in, it just restarts again and again. I don't feel like I have any control over the buttons on the phone.

Any way to solve this?
I'm completely willing to restore factory settings, but I just don't know how I could do so because the phone does not shut off, it just continues to restart.

Can I prevent home screen shortcuts from getting deleted or moved around?

I had recently gifted my Mom a Nexus 7, with a hope that she will like to read books. She is old with poor eye sight and can't read English that great. I find her eager to learn and she had made a good progress in reading few books. Since she is not used to these gadgets, I am trying to keep settings in her tablet constant. Recently I observed that the shortcut in home screen for PDF reader disappeared and resulting in discontinued reading till my arrival. The frequency of this sort of interruption has increased now a days. Rather than finding how the shortcut is being deleted, I think preventing changes to home screen is sensible.

Hence, I would like to know about any means to keep the icons or shortcuts in home screen and in launcher constant, immune to long press and drag and drop operations.

Device info: Nexus 7, running stock 4.2.1, unrooted, but willing to root if required.

Answer

There's no built-in functionality for this, but there are a handful of third-party launchers that support locking the desktop. Off the top of my head, I know that both Apex Launcher and ADW.Launcher do.

For Apex, simply double tap on an empty space on the home screen and then select "Lock Desktop" to prevent icons from being added or removed.

Apex Launcher screenshot

On ADW.Launcher you should be find a "Lock Desktop" option in the settings, which you can access from the overflow menu in the top right of the app drawer (Apex also has a settings menu there).

Other launchers that have the “Lock Desktop” option:

google play store - How to hide updates from market?

I have an app that has updates that reduce the functionality of the app. Is it possible to hide the updates so that I can use the "update all" feature, or update all apps from the list without worrying about the app? I've backed it up with Titanium Backup so I'll be able to restore it but that's a bit of a hassle. Also, the constant "New updates available" notifications are a pain in the.... neck.

Answer

Long press on the app in Titanium and choose "Detach from Market".

Can I get my phone back, given some information like model, IMEI, etc?

Luckily, I do have some inforomation. I know my model, IMEI, last time used, registration date and more. Can anyone offer advice for getting my phone back?

file system - How to read ext4 filesystem without mounting on a non-rooted device?

I perfectly know it is not possible to mount an ext4 partition from a USB key without root.

But in my case, I just need to read a password inside a .txt file (I don't have a PC right now and in the following weeks). This doesn t requires mounting it.

I know there's a Paragon plugin which allows acessing NTFS partitions without root inside Total Commander but it only works on exFAT and NTFS filesystems. But it proves it should be possible to do the same thing on ext4 without root.

So how to access my password right now without being able to root my device?

storage - Where does Google Play store its ebooks on an Android device?

In the Google Play Books Android application, there is an option to keep an ebook on a device if the user wants to do it. So when you decide to do such a thing, the ebook may be stored somewhere on the Android device. I would like to know where the ebook is stored. I searched in /mnt/storage and I only found Aldiko ebooks (in the /mnt/storage/eBooks folder), not the Google Play eBooks.

Thanks for your answsers.

PS : if it can help, I do this on an Archos G9 101 tablet.

malware - How to find out which app is trying to open spam websites?

I've recently bought a new Android smartphone. After setting it up and loading my contacts onto it I thought that would be it.

Now after some days, every time I unlock the phone it takes a few seconds before it opens the default browser and opens some spam website. I tried to see what was causing it. I removed any apps I didn't know I could trust, but the problem persisted. After trying to solve it for some time I gave up and reset the phone to factory default. Now after having it reset to the default it ran without issues for roughly a week before the problem reappeared.

I tried to uninstall some apps in order to see if they were to cause of it, but nothing changed after doing so. However I did notice that if I turn off the wifi it won't even try to open the browser (I haven't tried mobile data since I don't have a bundle). This makes me feel like it might be related to something on the network but that wouldn't explain why only that phone would have the issue when there are at least 6 android phones on that very same network.

I hope that there is someone who can help me find the cause of this issue and help me solve it.

TL;DR When unlocking my phone, it opens the browser and tries to open a spam website. But only does so while connected to the wifi.

Things I've tried so far:

  • Factory reset (only helped for a limited time)

  • Clearing the browser cache and all related data

  • Removing any app I don't know to be reliable

  • Attempting to find what triggers it (seems like some type of internet connection is required??)

The device is the Doogee Shoot 1. As for the browser, the default is set to be the Android browser, but if I change the default it would use Chrome just as well. It seems to really just use the browser that is set to default.

Answer

Based on the troubleshooting OP did following my advices, the culprit appeared to be a system app as a malware named System Locker with package name com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker. The issue appears to be a result of a system update, per some users of the device.

As usual with a system app, if you get to use the Disable option under Settings → Apps → System apps/All apps → the culprit, than by all means, do disable that app, force-stop it or reboot the Android. The issue should stand resolved until you factory reset the device.

Here's how I found out the culprit. The in-built Android tool dumpsys inter alia shows which app was called by which other app. The caller is referred to as Calling Package.

Provided that you have setup and successfully in the PC and Android device, do the following:

  1. keep the device connected to PC

  2. reboot the device or force-stop that default browser app

  3. let the malware do its job, that is, have the browser be launched automatically

  4. as soon as the browser is launched, do nothing with the device physically, but run the following adb command on PC:

    adb shell dumpsys activity activities

Here's the output from OP's device:

ACTIVITY MANAGER ACTIVITIES (dumpsys activity activities)
Display #0 (activities from top to bottom):
Stack #1:
Task id #2
* TaskRecord{8190ba1 #2 A=android.task.browser U=0 sz=1}
userId=0 effectiveUid=u0a64 mCallingUid=u0a26 mCallingPackage=com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker

affinity=android.task.browser
intent={act=android.intent.action.VIEW dat=http://im.apostback.com/click.php?c=362&key=9wl83884sg67y1acw3z56z90&s4=8%2FdNwcNuQFEjjaucho5IqA%3D%3D flg=0x10000000 pkg=com.android.browser cmp=com.android.browser/.BrowserActivity}
realActivity=com.android.browser/.BrowserActivity
...
...
Hist #0: ActivityRecord{66cd59b u0 com.android.browser/.BrowserActivity t2}
packageName=com.android.browser processName=com.android.browser
launchedFromUid=10026 launchedFromPackage=com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker userId=0
app=ProcessRecord{5ad1810 4337:com.android.browser/u0a64}

In the output: :

  • com.android.browser is the package name of stock Android browser in your device

  • com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker is the package name of the malware app and is referred as calling package.

If you've found the malware, avoid next troubleshooting and skip to the heading Nuke the malware.

(In response to a duplicate posted here -- the culprit app was Farming Simulator 18)

In certain circumstances, aforesaid troubleshooting may not be able to help, such as when calling package name is the package name of the browser itself shown in dumpsys output. In that case, prefer . Setup logcat like this:

adb logcat -v long, descriptive | grep "dat=http" # you can grep anything from URL too. It is purely up to you.
adb logcat -v long, descriptive > logcat.txt # alternative; if grep is not installed in your OS. You need to search into that file now.

Now unlock the device and let the browser with that URL be launched automatically. Also, press Ctrl with C if you are saving the output into a file.

The output we're seeking would look akin to:

[ 11-27 16:03:22.592 3499: 6536 I/ActivityManager ]
START u0 {act=android.intent.action.VIEW dat=https://livemobilesearch.com/... flg=0x10000000 pkg=org.mozilla.firefox cmp=org.mozilla.firefox/.App}

from uid 10021
...

[ 11-27 16:03:22.647 3499:15238 I/ActivityManager ]
START u0 {act=android.intent.action.VIEW dat=https://livemobilesearch.com/... pkg=org.mozilla.firefox cmp=org.mozilla.firefox/org.mozilla.gecko.BrowserApp}

from uid 10331

See the two highlighted UIDs 10021 and 10331. One of them (they would be different in you case) is for the browser app launched, and one of them is malware app requesting that URL. So, how to find what is what?

If you've root access, simply do:

adb shell su -c 'ls -l /data/data/ | grep u0_a21'
adb shell su -c 'ls -l /data/data/ | grep u0_a331'

Output would be like:

drwx------ 5 u0_a21 u0_a21 4096 2018-01-01 10:31 com.android.chrome
drwx------ 5 u0_a331 u0_a331 4096 2018-01-01 10:31 com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker

If you don't have root access, do:

adb shell dumpsys package > packages_dump.txt

Now search for the line with your UIDs such as "userId=10021" and "userId=10331". The line above the line searched would give you the package name, and may look something like this:

Package [com.android.chrome] (172ca1a):
userId=10021
...
Package [com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker] (172ca1a):
userId=10331

The two package names are com.android.chrome (for Chrome browser -- certainly not a malware) and com.tihomobi.lockframe.syslocker. To know the app's name from package name, use my answer here.

Now that you know the culprit, you can disable it through GUI as stated above. If that is not possible, do:

adb shell pm disable-user PKG_NAME # disables the app
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 PKG_NAME # removes the app for primary user
adb shell am force-stop PKG_NAME # only force-stops the app

Replace PKG_NAME with package name of the malware you noted in the troubleshooting above.

That should do the trick. Furthermore, you can also consider removing the malware app permanently for all users, but that requires root access though.

usb debugging - How to enable USB debug on Note 2?

No matter what setting I change, my Samsung Note 2 is always entering "USB media mode" instead of "debug mode".

I have the USB debug option set and the Google USB driver from the SDK installed, but adb devices shows nothing.

Enabling USB debug on my Nexus and plugging it in gives the debug mode just fine and adb devices shows it.

If I plug the USB in the Note 2 with USB debug enabled, the notification shows "Connected as media device".

If relevant my device is running Android v4.1.2.

wi fi - Can't access tethered server from Android browser. (Time out or "URL blocked")

Synopsis: Trying to access local web development server connected by WiFi to Android tether. Everything seems to be connected and operating correctly, but phone's web browser times out when accessing local server.

Context: I've got an Android device running android-wifi-tether. It works as advertised. I connect to it from my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop running Apache 2.2.22. The laptop is manually configured to IP 192.168.2.100 in the hosts file. It can ping itself and access it's own web server through that address.

The WiFi tether hotspot gives the laptop the same 192.168.2.100 address(Laptop was configured to match the hotspot address as a troubleshooting step, and could be wrong.) Using ping I can ping the laptop from the phone using the 192.168.2.100 address. Using portscan the phone shows port 80 open on the 192.168.2.100 address.

So, everything looks like it's in place, but any attempt to browse to http://192.168.2.100 fails after a few moments with a 504(Gateway time out)

Any help would certainly be help.

Update: I've install SSH and migrated to Nginx on the server. Portscan now shows ports 22 and 80 open. Using ConnectBot I can login and get my own shell on the server machine by IP address. This should indicate that the network is functioning properly.

I've also install the Dolphin browser on the phone to help verify that it's not an issue with the browser. Still I am curious if the browser is actually looking for the address first within the hotspot's IP space, or if it's looking to the internet, where that address will always time out.

I am very new to the Android scene. I would really appreciate some feedback as to how to get my phone browsing a tethered server. The workflow I'm looking for makes connection to a local server critical.

Thanks again.

Solution As I assumed, due to HTTP Proxy settings the web request was bypassing local addresses. I found that if I changed the tether network to 10.* IP range my provider responded with "access to this url has been blocked." That made it evident that something was blocking some requests, and more than likely also leaving the others to die out in the unroutable nether-net. Used HTTP Proxy Settings to clear out HTTP Proxy address.

Answer

Problem may be caused by HTTP Proxy server. Proxies help to manage web traffic on the providers end, but can and probably will disrupt access to local addresses. Proxy options may be available in your network settings, but on many phones these options are hidden. An app such as HTTP Proxy Settings will give access to the hidden settings. Simply clear out the hostname and port for un-proxied access. Make sure to write down original values so changes can be undone.

need to track # of times a video is opened/viewed on a Samsung Galaxy tablet. How?

I work for a company in Africa that works with smallholder farmers. One way that we try to improve our farmers' experiences is through showing them video of agricultural techniques and other subjects. The videos are all put on Samsung Galaxy Tab3 or 4 tablets and shown to the clients in the field. I need to know how many times the video is open and being shown to clients. The current video application we use does not track number of times viewed or open. Does anyone have a suggestions for an app or another way that I can track this? Thanks.

Answer

You can use Android secret code *#*#4636#*#* to track the usage time of the video player. While that does not give you the number of times video player has been opened, it should give you a fair indicator of the number of times (= usage / video duration ). The secret code needs to be entered on the dialpad of your telephone app

This app does the same and is an alternate to the secret code - 4636. Screenshot of usage time on my device below. You have options to track usage as shown

( Thanks to OP for highlighting another app App Usage that worked but 4636 didn't)

What is radio firmware?

When installing a custom ROM onto a rooted Android device, they often recommend to upgrade the radio firmware.

What exactly is Android's radio firmware?

Answer

The radio firmware controls basic low-level functions like network connectivity, Wi-Fi, and GPS. For several years, though, "radio" means "baseband", and controls network connectivity aspects only, while WiFi and GPS are governed by OS drivers, like any other devices.

Usually upgrading your radio will not give you any new features but will fix connectivity issues, increase range or performance, decrease battery usage, or the like. Some ROM's require you to have the latest radio versions to work.

While a botched radio upgrade can brick your phone, the process is basically the same as upgrading your ROM. Just make sure not to unplug or power down your phone in the middle, make sure you trust the person who released the radio firmware, and try to read some comments or reviews.

rooting - Preventing mobile data use for select apps on non-rooted phone?

I have a number of apps that are fairly chatty on the network, and with a limited data connection I would like these apps to not use the 3G connection (WiFi is fine).

I know that rooting the phone and installing DroidWall would do the trick. However, is there a way to accomplish per-app data permissions without rooting it?

FWIW, I have a Droid 1 on a CDMA network.

nexus 4 - How do I insert a non-breaking space with the Android OS Keyboard?

What are the names of the various versions of the Android OS, and how are these names chosen?

Many people refer to Android versions by "codenames" rather than version numbers (e.g. Android "Gingerbread"). What are the names of the various versions of the Android OS, and how are these names chosen?

Answer

Each version of Android since 1.5 has been developed with a specific codename. These codenames are chosen alphabetically and have thus far all been dessert items (or, generically, sweet/sugary foods). Some codenames are associated with more than one version number, while others are limited to only a specific one, and the reason for this inconsistency is not currently known. The naming typically appears to correspond to changes in the developer API levels, but this is not always true (example: 3.0 and 3.1 are both "Honeycomb" but they have different API levels).

The following names are used for the currently existing Android releases. Note that versions 1.0 and 1.1 were not publicly named. However, Android 1.1 was internally referred to as "Petit-Four" (noted in Traroth's answer, confirmed here):

Cupcake:

  • Android 1.5

Donut:

  • Android 1.6

Eclair:

  • Android 2.0

  • Android 2.1

Froyo: (short for "frozen yogurt")

  • Android 2.2

Gingerbread:

  • Android 2.3

Honeycomb:

  • Android 3.0

  • Android 3.1

  • Android 3.2

Ice Cream Sandwich:

  • Android 4.0

Jelly Bean:

  • Android 4.1

  • Android 4.2

  • Android 4.3

KitKat:

  • Android 4.4

Lollipop:

  • Android 5.0

  • Android 5.1

Marshmallow:

  • Android 6.0

Nougat: (official name: https://twitter.com/Android/status/748642375908589568)

  • Android 7.0

  • Android 7.1

Oreo:

  • Android 8.0

  • Android 8.1

Pie:

  • Android 9.0

cyanogenmod - After rooting my verizon Galaxy S3, I have no data or cellular connection?

So, when I first rooted my phone, everything worked fine. I had used CM 10.1 (Or at least some version of Cyanogenmod). Being curious, I wanted to try other ROMs. I then installed MUIU v5. Didn't like so I went back to a backup I had created previously, and updated to the latest version of Cyanogenmod. When I go to Settings->About Phone->Status, I see these settings:

Network: Verizon Wireless

Signal Strength: -97 dBm 1 asu
Mobile network type: CDMA - 1xRTT:7
Service State: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Mobile network state: Disconnected
My phone number: ***-***-**** --Giberish which ISN'T my phone number
MIN, MEID, IMEI, ICCID all give me long numbers.
IP Address: Unavailable

This is when Airplane Mode is off. My little signal icon in the top status bar has an R which I'm guessing is for Roaming.

I have no idea why it's doing this seeing that it worked fine before on Cyanogenmod. What can I do to get my signal and data connection back? What would have caused something like this?

4.2 jelly bean - Offline voice recognition not working

When my phone is not connected to internet, voice search is showing "Can't reach Google at the moment" message and voice search is not working. It is working perfectly with internet connection.

The settings shows that it has English(UK) and English(US) as two downloaded languages for offline recognition. I have an android phone running JellyBean 4.2.2 in it. I think my OS version and RAM size (2 GB) supports voice recognition as mentioned in this answer.

Any idea how this can be solved?

Answer

Voice search works in offline mode in Android Lolipop. In previous version you can use offline voice recognition only for writing messages (after click microphone icon on Android on screen keyborad).

Also be sure that your Google application is up to date: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

cyanogenmod - how to link contact with facebook, gmail etc?

I am on cm7 & HTC Desire. Old HTC Sence was linking my contacts with Facebook, Gmail etc. It gave me good suggestions what could be linked or an easy way how to link a contact item with some other kind of account. The current contact manager has a 'join' feature which I am not sure if I can use for Facebook.

Are there any advanced contact managers?

motorola droid - I keep losing my Swype keyboard

I'm running CM6 on a Motorola Droid.

Every now and then (at least once a day), my keyboard will revert from Swype back to the Stock Android Keyboard and I have switch back to the Swype keyboard to be able to use it again.

And sometimes (at least once every other day), the Swype keyboard will be completely disabled and I have to go back into Settings --> Keyboards and re-enable Swype.

This is starting to get really annoying. Any suggestions?

Answer

I believe this problem was caused by having Swype installed to the SD card. Moving Swype back to the phone's internal storage seems to have fixed the problem.

applications - Is there a way to see when the last time an uninstalled app was installed?

Here's the situation, I'm trying to work things out with an ex, but her friend saw me on Bumble and told her. I haven't used the app since before her and I started dating, but I must have just deleted the app without ever deleting my profile. It's been uninstalled for well over a year. Is there a way to see the last time an uninstalled app was installed so I can show her that I have not been using it?

Thanks!

settings - Undo "Disable autofill for [app]"

I am referring to the system-wide password autofill feature that was introduced in Oreo. In one app, I accidentally fat-fingered the prompt; instead of pressing "Fill with [autofill service]," I pressed "Disable autofill for [app]." How can I undo this? I want to be able to use autofill with that app again.

These did not fix the problem:

  • Changing the autofill service to Google and then back

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the app in which I want to use autofill

Answer

Long tap the username field, tap the three dots next to "Paste" and select autofill. There will be an option "Enable autofill for " where you can re-enable it.

applications - Rootless CLI Utilities

Do I have to root my android device to install command line utilities? I would really like to run Vim, among other programs on my phone. I have no reason not to root my phone, I just want to know if this is possible.

The Android Scripting seems to possibly have done this. Do I have to write my own Terminal app to be able to do this?

Answer

You don't need root. You also don't need a terminal, for an app to use its own private utilities. But if you want vim, Terminal IDE provides that, a number of other utilities (git, ssh, tmux), the ability to use bash or Java as a 'scripting language' at the terminal, and the ability to create and install Android apps on-device. I use Terminal IDE and vim quite a bit, (but with Better Terminal Emulator Pro's terminal, actually.)

rooting - How to securely root g2 phone (AT&T LGE LG-D800)?

I've been looking to root my phone, only all methods require installing binaries from little-known (by me) sites with no Web of Trust rating. I feel hesitant to do that.

Here are some rooting links I found for my phone:

Which of them are safer than others?

Also, there was a manual way to root via ADB, or if there was source code, or if there was a reputable trustworthy site to download from, I'd be feeling much more secure.

I am a Java developer, new to Android development, but it' something I want to learn, so programmatic solutions welcome.

samsung galaxy s 7 edge - Ad blocking without rooting, OR low-risk rooting

I have previously nervously rooted phones I've owned (Samsung S2, S3) as I wanted to be able to use AdAway ad-blocker, effective not just in browsers (e.g. AdBlocker) but also in other apps. I say nervously because I always found the mode in which these modified ROMs are offered (websites such as XDA developers) a bit dodgy/flimsy. Nevertheless, this has worked well in the past, but I am aware that I might just have been lucky, as those forums abound with bad experiences, i.e. bricked phones, or at the very least tons of wasted time trying to at least make your phone work again even in its stock let alone rooted firmware.

Now I have a new phone, the most expensive I've owned so far (S7 Edge), and browsing these same websites again, I feel just as edgy performing this risky operation. For instance, the S7 Edge section of the XDA-devs website has several rooted ROMs available, however without spending hours and hours it is not obvious what the differences between them are. To name, just a few doubts:

1) how are 'recovery' firmwares different from ones just called 'Kernel' or 'ROM'?

2) in what way does each of those ROMs differ from the CyanogenMod, which I've happily used in the past but for which there is no S7 Edge version released from what I can see? Incidentally, I used Odin to install CyanogenMod on my old phones, rather than a 'recovery'.

3) are there major differences in how the S7 Edge will operate with such a rooted firmware/ROM as compared to the stock one? Specifically, will it be any more vulnerable to exploits etc, given that no-one can really tell whether these ROMs have e.g. built-in trojans?

Given all these concerns about Android rooting, is there any way that adblocking can be performed without rooting? If not, what is the least-intrusive and least-risky way to root an Android (in this case an S7 Edge)?

Answer

It would be better if you split your question into three individual questions, but since they are linked to each other, I'll answer them here for you.

1) How are 'recovery' firmwares different from ones just called 'Kernel' or 'ROM'?

They refer to different things altogether.

Recovery :

Recovery refers to the dedicated, bootable partition that has the recovery console installed. A combination of key presses (usually power + volume up) or instructions from a command line, will boot your phone to recovery, where you can find tools to help repair (recover) your installation, install official OS updates and/or custom ROMs and other stuff.

Recovery firmwares contain a custom recovery file that enables you to do a lot more additional things than what the stock recovery offers. This can include options to re-root your device, a file browser to browse through your files, format individual partitions and more.

Kernel :

Kernel is the core of the operating system that handles requests to and from the hardware, memory and process management and all the low-level stuff that is necessary for Android to be able to run. It is based on the Linux kernel with a few modifications to suit it to Android versions.

Kernel firmwares contain a kernel that, when installed, replaces the existing kernel and modifies the low level stuff in order to tweak the software to make better use of the hardware. Better battery life, higher performance, increased signal reception, etc. are some things a custom kernel can do.

ROM :

A custom ROM replaces your device's Android operating system — normally stored in read-only memory — with a new or modified version of the Android operating system. A popular custom ROM is CyanogenMod, which gives you a host of new options as compared to the original firmware.

ROMs may contain a different Android system altogether or might also include a kernel and/or a recovery. It's best to read the OP on those threads to find out what it contains.

2) In what way does each of those ROMs differ from the CyanogenMod, which I've happily used in the past but for which there is no S7 Edge version released from what I can see? Incidentally, I used Odin to install CyanogenMod on my old phones, rather than a 'recovery'.

This is subjective to the ROM you are referring to. Some ROMs use the RRO-Layers engine for theming, while others use the CyanogenMod theme engine. Some ROMs might have additional features over those present in CyanogenMod, others might have a different user interface altogether.

As to the unavailability of an S7 Edge version of CyanogenMod, this is because official builds aren't made yet or are in the works.

3) Are there major differences in how the S7 Edge will operate with such a rooted firmware/ROM as compared to the stock one? Specifically, will it be any more vulnerable to exploits etc, given that no-one can really tell whether these ROMs have e.g. built-in trojans?

Again, these are subjective to the ROM you choose. Basically, some offer better performance, others offer better battery life, and a few more offer a mix of the two. It depends on which ROM you choose.

There are a few ROMs that might be more vulnerable to exploits than others. Therefore, it is recommended to go for an official build of a popular custom ROM, as they are tested and checked so that they would not contain malware.

Given all these concerns about Android rooting, is there any way that ad-blocking can be performed without rooting?

As @xangua said, Adblock Plus will filter WiFi traffic, but needs a proxy server configuration.

If not, what is the least-intrusive and least-risky way to root an Android (in this case an S7 Edge)?

Rooting is device-specific. There are different ways to achieve root access on different devices. In the case of an S7 Edge, you could try Kingo Root, it has been claimed to work on an S7 Edge. However, be careful, one wrong step can brick your device.

Android on Virtualbox - Internet connection isn't available to all apps

I've installed Android on Virtualbox. Everything works fine. As I started Android, I was able to insert my google username, browse the web, install application via PlayStore.

However, there are some applications I've installed that aren't able to use internet! They say that no internet connection is available.

I googled around, and I only found pages in which they solve the situation in which internet connection isn't available at all. But I did not find anything about my problem.

If other details are needed, please ask and I'll post them.

Can I see my Play Store wishlist on the web?

Google Play store recently gained a long-awaited wishlist feature in the 3.9.16 version of the application. I was wondering whether the wishlist could be modified from the web version of the Play Store while using e.g. a PC. I looked for around the website but wasn't able to find a way to do it, but perhaps I'm missing something.

Also, would the wishlist sync to all Android devices connected to the same Google account, or is it just local to the device it has been set up on?

applications - Does uninstalling apps leave any traces?

I come from a Windows background where anything you install-uninstall usually leaves traces which are sometimes hard to detect and remove.

Does the same happen when you remove Android apps? I know there is no registry in Linux/Android, but is there any place where traces can still remain?

I have seen some apps creating folders on the SD Card, but that's easy to spot and delete.

Thank you.

Answer

On an unrooted phone, apps run as distinct users, and don't have access to any files created by other users or system files, i.e. they are 'sandboxed'. Since they can't make any such changes, I would say the only thing they can leave behind is a little detritus on your SD card.

On a rooted phone, an app which has been granted root access can do pretty much anything that is possible in the hardware. Apps that have root permissions can write on non-read-only storage media (including modifying the bootloader), modify other programs' private data, modify system settings, modify system files, etc. A rooted app can also hide itself from the system, and pretend to be uninstalled while being perfectly well and alive.

Basically, rooted apps can do anything that the hardware allows

touchscreen - Why does fingerprint sensor not work when phone is charging?

I often face this issue. The fingeprint sensor does not work and sometimes the touch also misbehaves when phone is charging.

Why does this happen and how to fix this?

I experienced this issue with Mi Note 4, as well as Redmi 4A.

Answer

As requested by OP posting answer, in response to my comment (now deleted) based on my experience

Having a clean power supply, using original charger + USB cable, setting up finger prints again are the common things that work...

I am not sure as to why touch sensor works only with original charger but posting as it may help, as it helped OP

adb - Storage location of "adb_keys"

I have a Galaxy s3 (I9300) that has a broken touch screen (display is fine). I therefore can not click the authorization dialog that pops up when I try to access the device via adb on any ROMs above Android 4.2 as they require authorization to access the device via adb.

On 4.2 and 4.3 of the stock ROMs, I am able to copy my ~/.android/adbkey.pub file from my machine to /data/misc/adb/adb_keys on the device via CWM recovery and gain access. I have tried this with LineageOS 14 which is on Android 7.1.1 and I still don't get access. I am wondering where the adb_keys file is located on android 7.1.1 so I can do the same.

  5. Cleared Data of Play Store.

  6. Install older version of play store.

  7. Cleared App cache of all apps.

2.2 froyo - Why do new photos take so long to show up in the Gallery?

If I take some photos, and then go to the Gallery app, those photos do not always appear immediately. I've tried causing the Gallery to refresh, but the images simply do not appear for more than 15 minutes. I can open the Camera app again and browse through them, so I know they have been stored.

Is there a way to eliminate the latency between when a photo is taken using Camera and when it appears in Gallery?

Answer

The delay is because the Android media scanner process doesn't run constantly. There's an app in the market to force it to run -- http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.addz.mediascanner

I haven't used this app personally, but it is highly rated.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 not getting 5.0.2 update

I am working on provisioning several (3) Samsung Galaxy Tab 4's Model SM-T530, and one of them is not getting the latest system updates. It is stuck at Android 4.4.2, Kernel version 3.4.0-3235464. I have tried manually running the Update now, verified I am online, all that fun stuff.

This is the WiFi Only version, so it is not dependent on the carrier releasing the update, and the other two that were purchased from the same vendor at the same time, updated just like they were supposed to, and are now at 5.0.2.

What can i do to troubleshoot this issue? (Logs, check settings, etc)

Answer

Update will took some time to become available in every country.

If you check on Sammobile, 5.0.2 was released today (2015-07-16), and it is for United Kingdom. There no version for other countries.

You can flash UK version via Odin, but better wait some days for it to get released for other countries. After that you should be able to update it via OTA, without risks of bricking, flashing...

As it is WiFi only version, your tab doesn't depends on Country Code and it can work with any, it is just recommended to have version that is at least near you (like not installing Korean version, if you're from USA/EU (because of language, stock apps, QoL changes, compatibilty problems, etc)).

I just want to notice, as I already said this process is NOT recommended.

This involves flashing new ROM using Odin. This process can be risky, it can cause soft (even hard) brick. You should still have warranty, because package is signed by Samsung and it does not trigger binary counter but you never know.

It is best to wait even 1-2 weeks so it gets deployed in every region, but I think it will available in some days so it is not worth trying it...

Keep in mind if you want to continue, do backup! If something bad happens, you will have to do factory data reset, so you can be on safe side, if you need to format it

Process of installing new ROM:

  1. Download new ROM for your device variant from Sammobile.

  2. When you download, you will ususally get ZIP, that contains one .tar.md5 and one .dll. Ignore .dll and unpack only .tar.md5.

  3. Download Samsung USB driver and install it.

  4. Download Odin and unpack it.

  5. Make sure you disable A/V before you start flashing, it can cause fail. Also you must kill all Samsung Kies processes before flashing or flash will fail.

  6. Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap some times (as I recall it is 6-8 taps) on build number. It will enable developer options.

  7. Go Back and find Developer options. Enable it if it isn't. Also you must enable USB debugging and authorize your PC (don't forget to remember choice!).

  8. Reboot your device to Download mode (find on Google, how to do it for your tab), and plugin USB.

  9. Open Odin. Now you will see some 'blue' colored box where it says COM something. It means that your device is connected.

  10. Be sure that you ONLY HAVE CHECKED F. Reset Time and Auto-Reboot! Repartition MUST STAY UNCHECKED !

  11. Click on PDA and select .tar.md5, you previously unpacked. Let it some time to check everything.

  12. Start the process. DO NOT UNPLUG USB OR IT WILL BRICK DEVICE. If everything went well, your device will reboot into Android Lollipop 5.1 ready to use.

Also, Keep in mind - I or this site will not be held responsible if your device get brick after following this process. You should be on safe side but when you flashing and using Odin, you never know what can happen. In 99.9% of time it worked very well for me, but you never know. Good luck

dialer codes - How can I save keypad command numbers like `*#*#4636#*#*` to my contact list?

I learned from a previous question of mine that Android has got several system numbers, or "keypad commands," which produce all kinds of information or invoke a system mode.

As example: one of them is *#*#4636#*#* ( which produces all kinds of usage statistics ).

How can I save these number to my contacts list ?

Or is there some other way that I can create a short cut to enter these numbers ?

Answer

Save it as contact; then when you want to use it -> navigate to it; and choose edit before sending.

Minimal set of .apk files to enable Google Play

I have some Android Froyo device not blessed by Google, so it doesn't have Google Play/Market or any of GAPPS by default and device maker won't make any firmware updates.

Is it even possible now to make Google Play/Market work with Android Froyo?

What is the minimal set of .apk, framework and lib files should I put in pertinent folders to enable Google Play on my Froyo device?

I don't want to put all of gapps from goo.im:

  • I want to conserve some space on device (small built-in SD CARD),

  • I think that some of them may be malicious (Virustotal detects EnhancedGoogleSearchProvider.apk as Android/GoManag.A)

  • I believe that there is some resonable minimum that works anyway

settings - Change Default Save To Directory For Content Downloaded From Apps

I've been looking all over and could only find information on changing the directory for the camera or for changing from the internal storage to an external SD card.

What I am trying to figure out is how to consolidate my downloads, specifically all of my images, into one nice folder. For example, anything downloaded from Chrome is saved to the folder "Download" while everything I save from Reddit is Fun is saved to "Pictures." This drives me nuts when I am trying to send somebody one of these pictures and my Gallery is very cluttered. It would be great if there were an app and/or procedure that allowed me to specify which folder the content from each app should be downloaded into.

2.3 gingerbread - French QWERTY keyboard for Nexus S

When using the French language the default virtual keyboard on the Nexus S use the AZERTY keyboard layout.

That might be fine in Europe but not in North America (e.g. Quebec) where everyone uses QWERTY keyboards.

How can we globally change the keyboard layout on the Nexus S ?

Answer

If your phone is rooted, it's possible to do this by modifying system files that govern the keyboard. A much easier (and safer) way would be installing a 3rd-party keyboard replacement app that has a French QWERTY layout.

Out of keyboards I've personally used, I can recommend AnySoftKeyboard with French Language Pack. It includes both AZERTY and QWERTY (French-Canadian) layouts.

mp3 - How do I assign cover art to songs? (Archos 43)

I have an Archos 43 Internet Tablet running Android 2.2. Has anyone figured out how to assign cover art to songs in the Music player? Some of my songs work just fine, others don't. What should I be doing to ensure that cover art displays properly in the music player?

Answer

I don't know if Archos have modified the music player at all, but on most Android devices and players, the most reliable way to ensure that all your music shows its album art in the player is to embed the album art directly in the MP3 file, rather than relying on a "folder.jpg" or a "AlbumArt.jpg" being in the folder.

As far as I know most music selling websites embed the album art directly in the file, and a lot of popular CD ripping software does too these days, so it's probably only your older files, or ones you've got from elsewhere that don't have the art embedded in the file.

I use a Windows program called MP3Tag to embed the album art directly into the file amongst other things, but there's lots of other software that will do this, see these answers on our SuperUser sister site for some suggestions: What's the easiest way to update album art?, or Bulk fix Album artwork in iTunes library for display

audio - Creating 'fake' microphone and camera inputs on an Android mobile

Disclaimer: I don't own an android mobile, but would definitely get one if the below were possible.

On my mac, I can use software like CamTwist and SoundSiphon to create 'fake' webcam and microphone inputs.

CamTwist lets me pipe custom content (such as images or video) to that webcamera input, and SoundSiphon makes it easy to have system audio interpreted as microphone input.

Q. Is it possible to achieve something similar to the above, but on any Android handheld?

E.g. I'd like to be able to use a native Android app (such as Skype or Periscope) and pipe custom video to it (rather than using the in-built camera), whilst simultaneously broadcasting a custom audio file (rather than the in-built microphone)

Thanks!

twrp - Moto X rooting - ROM doesn't boot, but have Safestrap

I'm in a curious position. I don't have a working ROM on my Moto X, but I can boot into Safestrap, and from there fastboot. If I could get a ROM onto the device I could flash it with Safestrap, but I can't find a way of doing that.

The 'adb sideload' feature of Safestrap/TWRP runs, but the only safestrap-able ROM I have is 4.4.2, and my device lacks the kernel. I tried sideloading the stock 4.2.2, but that simply fails without installing, once loaded on the device.

Fastboot will recognize the device, but trying to flash anything, or do 'fastboot boot', gives 'permission denied' or 'command restricted'.

I can execute commands on the device from Safestrap, so in theory I have a working if crippled Linux OS running. I just can't seem to get files on it. Any help?

root access - Turn a Android Phone with broken screen into dedicated Web server

I have a Nexus 4 with a broken LCD/Digitizer, I have no control via touch at all. The other parts of the phone are functional. Now, what I want to do and hope is possible is to clear the phone and install some Linux distro via Usb. The trick is, I need to be able to control the installation via wifi or USB directly after the upload of the Linux package. After this I want to run it as a dedicated Web server of some sort. I welcome any type of solutions. All I want in the end is to use my phone as a dedicated Web Server which I can control remotely.

Thanks.

Answer

Welcome to the Android Enthusiasts, Majk! We support end-users with Android-specific issues, but cannot help you setting up a Linux server on a device, though it was running Android before. Still, some helpful hints:

  • There are means to control your device even with a broken screen. We've got several issues reported where people wanted to do exactly that. Please check e.g.:

  • There are several web server apps available for Android as well. Even some supporting/including things like PHP and MySQL. Some examples:

I guess that should get you started if you want to solve your issue using Android. And as I initially wrote: Doing that with any other OS, even on an "Android device", is beyond the scope of this site. But I would wonder if you will really need that, after these details – right? :)

I googled the [city] 14442 but could not find anything about it. Perhaps, it is some piece of information about radio channels but could not find about it. Some threads recommend to configure Call Settings (here thread Turning off cell broadcast in HTC Desire 816).

To turn them off in OxygenOS, you can go to Settings > More > Mobile Broadcast settings > choose there appropriately.

  • Turn off Amber alerts.

external sd - "SD card is damaged - You may have to reformat." How do I fix this problem?

I had this before, formatted it and now it's happened again.

I suspect it's the problem mentioned here but I don't understand how to apply the fix from that thread.

I thought I had to download the file, rename it to update.zip, stick it on the phone's internal SD card, go into recovery mode and run "apply sdcard:update.zip" but I get an error when I do that which says:

E:signature verification failed / Installation aborted.

I'm not even sure if the fix is the right fix or the process is correct either, but if they are how do I get around this signature error?

It's a Galaxy S, running Froyo.

What is ClockworkMod Recovery and what is it for?

What is ClockworkMod Recovery and what is it for?

Answer

ClockworkMod Recovery is a "custom recovery image" which is installable on many Android devices. You can install it in order to replace your device's "stock recovery image" with something more useful. Specifically, it can be used to backup and restore your current ROM and data, as well as to install new ROMs.

You can use ROM Manager to manage which ClockworkMod Recovery is installed (you need one specifically for your device), to easily boot into ClockworkMod Recovery, and to install ROMs.

How to search contacts with T9 dialer on Nexus 4

I had a myTouch Slide 4g rooted and running Android 4.0. I was using the default dialer that came with CyanogenMod's Google Apps ROM. I recently picked up the Nexus 4 (not rooted and the bootloader is locked), but it doesn't search through contacts when I put in numbers. Is there a way to use the default dialer to search for contacts by name or number?

Answer

This is now a standard feature of Android 4.3, although you do need to enable it.

From http://www.android.com/about/jelly-bean/

Autocomplete - just start touching numbers or letters and the dial pad will suggest phone numbers or names. To turn on this feature, open your phone app settings and enable “Dial pad autocomplete.”

wi fi - Access Android device's file system over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

I'm looking for a way to access the file system of an Android device (Nexus S) wirelessly, as its USB port has become unfit for anything but charging. Ideally, I'd like the same functionality as offered by connecting the phone to a PC with a USB cable.

Answer

Over Wi-Fi
Install a small app SwiFTP FTP Server. (original link 'dead' - 2012-09-22, see 'http://ppareit.github.com/swiftp/' instead ) Just, setup username & password. After tapping Start button, your device will become FTP server & the app will give you URL (handy if you don't know device IP & FTP URL format). On PC, you can use any FTP client software to access file system of device. Windows Explorer works, too. You can also create a network drive in computer. For example, you can visit this in address bar of Windows Explorer:

ftp://192.168.1.10:2121/

Here, 192.168.1.10 is IP of Android device & 2121 is port on which FTP server is working (you can configure port in app, too). Visiting it will ask you username & password. Enter what you specified in app. Done!

The app will not give you URL if device is not connected to PC using external Wi-Fi router, but it works in those situation too. If you've made device Wi-fi Hotspot & connected PC with Ad-hoc network, then you'll have to find device IP by yourself (ipconfig /all command is fine with Windows). It really works as long as you've IP of device (I've tested it by myself). Just, use this IP in FTP URL & visit it.

The Interesting Thing: As FTP is universal standard, this method will work with any PC, Mac. That's not true for Samba file share, AirDroid etc.

Over Bluetooth

There's no need of external app. If Bluetooth software on PC supports OBEX FTP, you can do this directly. If you've issues with stock bluetooth services, install Bluetooth File Transfer app. It supports both OBEX FTP and OPP. Means, you can do both-side file system access: device to PC & PC to device!

cyanogenmod - How to check if flashlight is activated?

I've got a brandnew OnePlus One with Cyanogenmod 12 on it, and the device is rooted.

I like the offscreen gestures very much. But sometimes they are triggered accidentally. This is very costy when the flashlight is turning on and you don't get it.

So my thought was, to write a task with Tasker, which let the phone vibrate, when the flashlight has been enabled.

But unfortunately I have no clue how. I looked for a solution in the web, but I didn't find anything. So maybe you have an idea how I could achieve this. Thanks in advance.

calls - Does TrueCalller App leak your phonebook?

Sometimes, I cannot find new contacts that I add to Truecaller phonebook, but sometimes, I think if it shares/leaks my contacts to public. It shows other people contact details that I never added there. So I am thinking if it is doing the same to me.

Andoird: 7.1.1
Phone: Oneplus 3T

Answer

Yes! it does, when using Truecaller application or services you have already accepted their :

Truecaller - Privacy Policy

So, in this case you agree that :

Truecaller may use your personal information collected by their application to provide, maintain, improve, analyze and personalize their Services for other Users, partners and third party providers.

More specifically, Truecaller may use such information to provide names of contacts from your address book to other Trucaller users.

What does permission "MANAGE_ACCOUNTS" mean?

Once in a while I read that MANAGE_ACCOUNTS Permission is needed (actually it is called "KONTEN HINZUFÃœGEN ODER ENTFERNEN" as I have a German phone. I guess the text below is something like "Add or remove accounts, create accounts and set passwords, use accounts on the device" in English).

I'm asking this question because I wanted to install the GitHub-App.

I think I found a very similar question which I would like to include here:

  1. What does it mean they can create accounts?

  2. Why would Amazon (Kindle app) / GitHub even need this?

  3. Are there any risks?

Answer

In short, GitHub is using the internal Account System manager to store your GitHub credentials. This works the exact same was as adding a Google account or an Exchange account. Essentially, you are logging in with your credentials and they are stored in the Account Manager, which prevents you from having to re-enter these credentials again in the future.

This is most useful when the credentials are used across multiple applications as you only have to login once. For example, Google Chrome will access your account via the Account Manager instead of forcing you to login again (the yellow dialog that pops up at the bottom asking if you want to sign in with your locally held Account on your phone when visiting gmail or another Google website on your phone's Google Chrome browser).

What does it mean they can create accounts?

They can created local accounts on your phone for their application (and only their application). Here's an example of a list on my phone:

Screenshot

Why would Amazon (Kindle app) / GitHub even need this?

It simplifies credentials in Android. It's the recommended method to do this.

Are there any risks?

There shouldn't be. If an app uses the AccountManager and say, wants to use your Google account, then it will have to explicitly ask you for permission as it needs an auth token to use that account. See more info on the SDK documentation.

external display - How to connect your Nexus phone to a VGA projector?

I would like to connect my Nexus 5 to an external projector or monitor. I know that there is a SlimPort to HDMI adapter (I have it), however, projectors and standard monitors still have VGA (and no HDMI) output.

In addition to the SlimPort HDMI adapter by Analogix, I also bought the deleyCON HDMI to VGA adapter. The problem is that the external displays do not display any content (the SlimPort to HDMI cable is working, though). I also saw an SlimPort to VGA adapter from Analogix, but three customers say that it did not work either; see here for such a case.

Has anyone succeeded in connecting the Nexus 4 or 5 to a VGA display?

I note that How to use an Android phone or tablet to make a projector presentation? also addresses the problem. However, using a HDMI to VGA adapter (mentioned there as a possible solution) is not working. I am not sure if a real HDMI to VGA converter would be working, but they are typically bulky and I am wondering if there is a specific adapter to solve this problem.

side loading - How do I sideload, i.e. install non-market apps, on at&t phones?

I'd like to try out some Android beta software I found online, but when I tried installing it on the device I got a message that said that installing non-market apps has been disabled for security reasons. Can I bypass/disable this restriction? I am using the at&t Captivate (Samsung Galaxy S) with Android 2.1.

Answer

No need to load a custom ROM. You have two paths possible -- You can simply use special software on your PC to sideload apps or you can do some edits to the configuration databases on the phone to bypass the block permanently.

This page covers both methods -- http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_Sideload

storage - Missing internal flash memory and SD card does not mount

Some time ago I installed a custom firmware (YAR28) on my Archos 7HT. This worked fine for a while, until some day when I switched it on it showed the initial startup screen, and after that all my installed apps were gone. So I re-installed the stock firmware from Archos. But then I found out I could no longer access the sd-card. It was not mounted when I inserted it. But when I connected the device to my PC using USB it did show up as drive F: and G:. I could access F:, which was obviously my sd-card, but G: (which should be the internal flash) could not be accessed, and Windows even asked if this should be formatted.
When I open the Files on my tablet, and select 'SD Card' it gives the 'SD card is unmounted' error. And when I select 'Internal Memory' it is completely empty. So it looks like the file system is still working, but the internal flash part somehow is no longer accessible.
I have a feeling that some low level setting has changed and that I could somehow solve it if I could get access to the underlying Linux system, but I do not have a clue how to proceed.

Answer

Indeed the internal filesystem somehow got damaged. To fix this you need access to the filesystem itself, which can be done using ADB. (Android Debugging Bridge) Instructions for connecting to the Archos Tablets using ADB can be found here:

http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates_adb.html?country=er&lang=en

Although the description is complete this still sometimes can be hard. You might have to restart your computer a few times, but eventually it is possible.

Open a command window in the directory containing the ADB.exe program (it is in the 'platform-tools' directory under the androis-sdk-windows folder)
Type:
ADB SHELL
If the connection is OK, it will start a server and after e few seconds show the '$' prompt. this means you are connected to the tablet and have direct access to the linux shell. If you type 'ls' you will see a list of folders that contain the operating system and all supporting files that make your tablet work.
Now navigate to the folder containing the Flash file system by typing:
cd ./dev/block/vold
If you now type 'ls' again you should see three or four folders that have numbered names. One of them is '31:8'. This is the folder that points to the internal flash. Now we can fix our problem by recreating the MS-DOS (FAT32) file system on this partition. Type the following:

mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/block/vold/31:8/
This will fix the FAT32 filesystem. Now leave the shell by typing 'exit', disconnect the USB and restart your tablet. On my system this made internal storage re-appear, and after that it also mounted the sd-card. Problem solved.

Many thanks to this post on SlateDroid that contained the answer.

Ideal charging / discharging percentage for maximum battery life?

One of my friends has a relatively new Samsung smartphone. He has this app that notifies him whenever the charging is up to 80%, and tells him to unplug the charger.

He tells me that it will increase the number of charging cycles for his battery. He says that if he lets it charge all the way up to 100%, it will mean he has to replace the battery of the phone more often.

Is this true?

Somehow, I feel this is a thing of the past. I thought the internal architecture of batteries these days was made so that it wouldn't drop too low or too high. (In other words, when the phone is at 100%, it isn't really 100%. It's what the battery can safely be charged to in order not to degenerate too much.)

Here's a related answer which taught me something about this.

Answer

In the comments to linked answer, it was brought out that batteries are not allowed to stay at 100% charge since it is harmful to the battery and the battery % rapidly drops to around 90% as explained in this XDA post. This is a precaution implemented by OEMs ( though not sure if all OEM's do that)

Related to this is battery longevity on terms of Voltage per cell

Source: How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries

Most Li-ions charge to 4.20V/cell, and every reduction in peak charge voltage of 0.10V/cell is said to double the cycle life.... In terms of longevity, the optimal charge voltage is 3.92V/cell. Battery experts believe that this threshold eliminates all voltage-related stresses;

enter image description here

This voltage as per Table 4 ( above ) corresponds to battery charge level at 58 ℅ . This is clearly impractical and the recommendation of your friend to charge to 80%, more than doubles the discharge cycles .

This was on the charging part. Table 2 shows another interesting aspect discharging and it's impact on battery life

enter image description here

IMO , if one badly wanted to maximise battery life, ideally, keeping practical usage in mind - charge when the battery drops to 50% and stop charging at 80 or 90%

Thanks to Dmitry in comments who says and subsequently made an interesting point in his answer for the end user is number of charge cycles*capacity at full charge: that's how long a battery will last for a given usage pattern

Edit: For rooted devices, there is an app on XDA which disconnects charging at a given percentage. This is now open source. Approach followed appears to be similar to my solution here Automatically limit (stop) battery charging at a given percentage

Edit 2: Discovered this magisk module which does the same bit going by the description it is better than module listed above. Not tested either of them as I am using own solution

Edit 3 This theory is disputed by some and not decisively concluded one way or other. I believe it to be valid. Adding this to be objectively clear
