5.1 lollipop - How can I detect if my phone is in a "Normal calls are restricted by access control" state, blocking incoming and outgoing calls

Sometimes this error occurs on my cell (a Lenny 2 with android 5.1). I'll only notice the error when I try to make a call, there are no obvious warnings that something is erroneous i.e. signal strength is fine - perfect. I can't receive calls then either, this can be pretty bad as you can imagine.

I tried the standard things, resting to factory defaults, only using the stock apps, updating everything, contacting phone manufacturer and network provider to no avail.

When the error occurs, its easily fixed by switching into airplane mode for a sec and back again.

What I would like to do:

Create a small app that periodically checks if I can do a call or can be called i.e. checking if the device is connected to the network correctly. And if something isnt working correctly, it automatically does the airplane-mode switch.

  • Is there a method for doing such a test, without actually dialing a number?

battery life - How much (Idle) time is needed for "Doze" to get activated ? (Android 6- Marshmallow)

Consider a device that was left on a table, unplugged, and no movement. After sometime, the screen turns off, and the screen lock may (or may not) be auto activated, according to lock and smart lock settings.

  • Firstly, let's assume its locked, how much time is required for Doze, working to save power?

  • On the other hand, if the smart lock is acting (like by geographic location), keeping device unlocked for several hours (is six the limit, right?), how will this affect "Doze" functionality?

Are there any stats of Android version distribution by region?

The dashboard shows global distribution, and I wonder if there's a way to find out the difference in Gingerbread distribution between say, India and Europe.

Answer

Not for those "ancient versions", but for Android 4.0+ you can find some stats in Christina's Blog. Giving the example matching closest to your question:

How to sync an Android phone with anything other than Google?

Possible Duplicate:
Suggestions for syncing data to someone besides Google? Funambol?

As I understand, the Android phone can only sync with Google (GMail, Google Calendar, etc.) out of the box. I can imagine corporate users having a problem with their data residing on Google's servers — despite their "do no evil" credo.

Is there any Android application that lets you sync with the desktop (either Linux or Windows) or corporate server applications (think Exchange)?

sms - How do you delete thousands of text messages at once?

I have a HTC vivid and need to delete about 30,000 texts. Every time I try to do it, it freezes my phone. The same thing happens when I try to create a backup.

windows - How do I run WindowsXP as a virtual machine on Android?

I would like to run Windows XP as a virtual machine on my Android tablet. Since Android is based on Linux, is it possible to compile VirtualBox to run in Android? If not possible, is it possible to run WinXP as a virtual machine in any way on an Android tablet?

Answer

Have a look at qemu. Apparently it's known to run on ARM. Running XP (if it even works) is probably not going to be a pleasant experience due to what's noted by Chris Herbert and the probable lack of a screen/pointer driver. If you really want to do it maybe wait for the Intel Atom (x86) based tablets. There should be some Atom based Windows 8 tablets about now. The androids are coming soon.
