How to disable Screen timeout for a particular program only

Is it possible to disable Screen timeout only when a particular program is running?

If so, how do I do that?

My Nexus One has a "Screen timeout" in "Display settings" that lets me choose anywhere between 15 seconds and 30 minutes, but this is across the board. I would like it to disable screen timeout only when one of the programs (that I currently develop) is running. Is this possible?

If this isn't possible, is it possible to disable it for only when a program is waiting for user input (via a dialog box)?

I wouldn't mind so much about the screen timeout itself, but once the screen times out, the device gets locked as well. :(

Answer

You can user Tasker to control the timeout for individual apps.

Titanium Backup: How to restore user apps and data without system apps and data?

Is there a way to restore user and system data separately with Titanium Backup?

I would like to restore only my user apps and data (excluding system apps and data). The only way to achieve this seems to be to select "Restore all apps with data" in the Restore section and manually uncheck all system apps.

This is certainly doable but becomes tedious if you restore your device often. Is there a more convenient option?

Answer

If you click on Click to Edit Filters in the Backup \ Restore tab in Titanium Backup you can select:

Filter by type:

System

User

Uninstalled

Then you can restore all apps that are only filtered by these (or a combination of them).

samsung galaxy s 2 - Where is a downloaded .apk placed in Android phones?

Possible Duplicate:
Where in the file system are applications installed?

Where is a downloaded .apk placed in Android phones? I want to backup the .apk files to my PC so that if something happens I will just restore the applications instead of re-downloading them from market.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S II.

Answer

If you don't have root access, it doesn't matter because you won't be able to back them up.

If you do have root access, use an app like Titanium Backup to back up the apks.

Note:

This doesn't really answer the question of where to find the downloaded APKs, but it does address the need of the OP.

Long term effects of charging Nexus 5 with an other device's charger (fast charging)

A roommate has bought a OnePlus One (OPO) phone. When I tried charging my Nexus 5 with the charger of OPO I found that it charged my Nexus device amazingly fast. I'm talking 3-4 times faster charging than the normal charger does (and about 20-30 minutes to charge completely).

I was told this fast charger could result in negative long term effects on the battery. Is there any truth to it? And why would it happen?

Answer

Your phone isn't capable of charging any faster than it's built to charge. The Nexus 5 had very limited support for Quick Charge 1.0 due to its processor, although my understanding is that this functionality wasn't enabled for the 5. But the phones are designed to pull only as much power as they can safely pull. If it can't take it, it'll negotiate a lower rate with the charger.

That said... 20-30 minutes to charge completely doesn't sound possible. I'm not aware of a single phone that can do that. So something's a little bit odd there...

EDIT: Did some research and confirmed that this charge speed simply isn't possible. A few points:

  1. The most current I've ever seen a Nexus 5 pull from any charger (and I've tried a very wide range) was 1.2A. And boy was that fleeting. At that rate, it would charge fully in 2.3 hours, according to this battery charge time calculator. That's actually a little less than Anandtech found in their comparison chart found in the OnePlus One review, listing its charge time at 2.54 hours. That's more realistic, because as I said, getting a full 1.2A for more than a moment or two was quite rare, and phones draw less current the closer they are to full.

  2. According to that same review, the Nexus 6 is the second-fastest charging phone on the market (or was at that time), charging from 0% to 100% in 1.89 hours. Faster than the Nexus 5, but still a quarter of the speed you're saying you're getting on the Nexus 5. I just plugged my Nexus 6 into a QC2.0 charger, which I believe is still considered the fastest phone charging tech anyone's using, and right now it's pulling about 1.75A, which would be about 2.25 hours to fully charge. That said, it's nearly full, so that's when it slows down, which likely accounts for the difference between my figure and Anandtech's.

  3. Using that same battery charge calculator, to fully charge the Nexus 5 at your WORST-case scenario of a full 30 minutes, would require 5.52A of power. 8.29A for 20 minutes. Even the iPad, which has a massively larger battery and needs much more power to charge at a reasonable rate, uses only a 2.1A.

  4. The OnePlus One charger outputs only a maximum of 2A according to its own label. The best that charger could possibly do in an ideal world where it somehow can charge the Nexus 5 at full speed the ENTIRE time, is 1.38 hours.

Any way you slice it, it's not possible for a Nexus 5 to fully charge, with ANY charger, much less the OPO charger, in 20-30 minutes. If yours is informing you that it is, your Nexus 5 is faulty and displaying incorrect battery information. It's either displaying 100% when it's not full, or shutting itself off WAY before it's reached 0%. It's possible that this is an indication of the OPO charger somehow interacting badly with it, in which case I may rescind my initial advice that it can't hurt.

Is there any way (as a user) to force all notifications to be expandable?

Some notifications can't be read because they spill over the allotted space, but I can't expand them because the app developer never enabled that feature. Can I force all notifications on my phone to be expandable so I can read them?

clock - How do wi-fi only Android devices synchronise time?

I'm having a problem with some Android tablets being unable to synchronise the time when connected to our wireless network. This is in a school and fairly heavily locked down, so it's probable that they are being blocked from accessing something that they need to in order to synchronise the time.

These are Wi-Fi only devices, so they can't set the time from a GSM provider or anything, meaning they must be using something else, presumably NTP. If it's NTP, how can I view/change the time server used?

The devices are Android 4.0.1. I'm not sure what make/model they are but will try and find out.

Answer

We confirmed with the device manufacturer that the devices use NTP to sync the time with pool.ntp.org. After a bit of research of my own, I discovered that NTP is configured in /system/etc/gps.conf. You have to be root to edit this file, but I was at least able to confirm that the information given to us was correct.

We have opened the firewall to traffic going to pool.ntp.org, and so far all of the devices have kept in sync, so it looks like this has worked as intended.

Thanks to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200089 for the info on the NTP config file.

The power button on my Galaxy Nexus stopped working

I got a galaxy nexus at Google IO, and randomly today the power button stopped working. I was on a call, used it to lock the screen after I got off, put it in my pocket, and when I got home the button wasn't working. The rest of the phone works if I plug it in to charge (waking up the screen), but the button doesn't respond. Short press doesn't lock/wake and long press doesn't bring the power menu up. What happened and how can I fix it?

I've tried pulling the battery and letting it sit for a few minutes without rebooting it, and it didn't help.

Answer

If the phone is working normally except for the power button not responding, you most likely have a hardware issue. That is, the power button is probably physically broken.

In this case, you will need to return the phone to the manufacturer or the point of purchase for a repair or replacement.

Before returning the phone, copy off any personal data you wish to keep, and remove the battery, SD card, SIM card and any external case; do not ship those or any other accessories back along with the phone. You may get a replacement phone, and your data and accessories will not be transferred.

cyanogenmod - Disabling "Storage space running out" notification in Status Bar?

Is there any way to disable the "Storage space running out" notification on Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 [Android 4.2.2], through ADB or otherwise ?

Answer

To permanently disable storage notifications, try long-pressing on the notification, go to App Info and uncheck Show notifications. You must do it through long-pressing.

If it is un-checkable, hit Force Stop and confirm.

rom flashing - Can not re-sign Android system app without app crashing (using LineageOS)

I have re-signed all system apps of LineageOS with my own key and have replaced them all before the first boot. LineageOS boots normally but then all re-signed system apps crash with an error like:

SystemUI stopped, Settings stopped.

The screen stays dark. It seems that the re-signed system apps are unusable. Maybe I made some mistake or LineageOS has some anti-tampering check implemented?

What i have done: I opened all system apps with the winrar zip manager and removed the CERT.RSA and CERT.SF files in each META INF folder and deleted all the names and SHA-256 digest entries in all MF manifest-files. Also all other apk for example, in the framework folder, like the framework-res.apk file, I edited them like this. Then I created a keystore with Key, using the Java keytool, I think this is self-signed. Then I signed all APKs with the Uber Apk signet tool and successfully performed zip-aligning. Then I flashed Lineage OS with TWRP on the phone. Before the first boot, I deleted the system apks with the TWRP file manager and replaced them with my self-signed ones. Uber-Sign-Tool: https://github.com/patrickfav/uber-apk-signer

Thanks for your help

Mike the android-noob

That's why I did that: https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/9z728h/how_to_change_frameworkresapk_without_bootloop/

UPDATE (thx Zillinium): I have now adapted with the TWRP terminal chmod with the following commands: Before I adapted chmod I checked everything with ls -l. Then I adjusted everything as it is right in the system so for me: chmod 644 for system-apk's and the apk-folders and chmod 755 for the /system/app and /system/priv-app folders. Now I'm stuck again in BOOTLOOP when i edit chmod :(((

The chown-Settings were already on root. Also i tried chown 0.0 -R and chcon u: object_r: system_file: s0 (see also installing apk in /system/app with android 5.1 or higher (simple adb push doesn't work anynore) push does) I stuck again in BOOTLOOP when i edit chmod :(((

There are no Odex files available.

Why i can edit without problems the AndroidManifest.xml from all Systemapps if i keep the original signature except at the framework-res.apk. Does anyone know why it dont work with the framework-res.apk?? The only way i find which works is to turn off signature verification in the whole system, but this is bad for the security.

Rooting nexus 4 failed

I was trying to root my nexus 4 by the following steps:

  • Download and copy the file UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.43.zip to /sdcard/

  • Download the file CWM 6.0.3.5

  • Got into Fastboot/Bootloader Mode on Nexus 4

  • Execute the command fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.5-mako.img

  • Choose RECOVERY from the Fastboot menu and enter Recovery Mode

  • In ClockworkMod recovery “flash zip from SD card”

  • Then selected “choose zip from sdcard”

  • Now I should see the copied file UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.43.zip but there was none, and I got the output `Can't mount /sdcard/

Then I tried to use Install zip from sideload

  • I sent the file with adb sideload UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.43.zip

  • I get the output:

    Restarting adbd...
    E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install`
E:failed to open last_install: Invalid argument
    Finding update package...

How to remove TouchWiz and revert to a vanilla Android UI?

Is it possible to remove the TouchWiz UI and have the phone behave like the vanilla Android UI?

Answer

It's impossible to root out TouchWiz without modifying the Samsung source code to remove and replace it; it's heavily embedded in the OS. This would be a massive effort and I don't believe anyone's done it. The only alternative is a ROM built from stock in the first place, such as Cyanogen as Ryan mentioned.

How do I turn off email notifications on my Gmail app on Android?

I'm using an LG Tribute phone which I recently purchased for Virgin Mobile. I have Gmail installed and by default, whenever I get an email, it generates a notification (in my case a buzz since I have my phone on vibrate).

How do I turn off notifications entirely for my Gmail app (don't want any sounds when I receive an email)?

Answer

Also, if you wanted to disable notifications entirely for the Gmail app (or any other app for that matter), you could do this:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → All Apps tab.

  2. Find the app you want to stop receiving notifications for and tap on its entry.

  3. Find a check-box for "Show Notifications" and uncheck it.

  4. A warning that you might miss important updates will be shown, tap "OK" to continue.

You have now successfully disabled notifications for the app!

restore - Why Browser Tabs Reload After Restoring Back From Multi-Tasking?

When i have tabs opened no matter in which browser and restore back to that browser due to previous multi-tasking, i get all tabs reloading (or would it be more correct to say, loading again from scratch?).

I thought when multi-tasking, tabs are supposed to leave at state they previously were in. So when certain websites were already loaded, why would they reload again and consume bandwidth?

UPDATE: Here is my device's memory status (sorry for bad quality but until Android implements screenshot feature in stock ROM or until i decide to ROOT, i will be capturing with another device's low quality camera):

4.4 kitkat - How to have the alarm audible when on vibrate or silent?

I have an issue with my Android 4.4 Nexus 5. When the phone is on either silent or vibrate modes, the alarm is also either silent or just vibrates, which does not wake me up.

I need the alarm to be loud even though my phone is set to vibrate or silent. Currently I'm turning the volume up on my phone just before I go to bed, but that annoys my wife because text messages etc. then wake her up. This is annoying as this is my first phone after coming from iOS for several years, where this wasn't an issue.

I have tried an app to fix this (Persist), but that didn't work. I can probably set a tasker profile up to turn volume on at 6am in the morning, but that seems overkill for what should be a simple fix. I've had very mixed results with third party alarm apps. Lollipop will help in that I will have a "do not disturb feature" again, but that still requires me to ensure my phone is set to ring so I get my alarm to go off properly.

Am I missing something?? Should it be this hard to get an alarm that wakes me up? What do people recommend?

Edit: When I go to Settings > Sounds > Volumes, if the Ringtone & notifications volume is down, the "Alarms" volume is automatically turned off, and I can't change it. In fact the alarm icon even gets a cross through it. So it looks intentional, but I can't for the life of me work out why that would be desired behaviour.

applications - Volume Button To Scroll Up Android

So there is probably one feature I miss sincerely and that is being able to hit the title bar on the iPhone to essentially trigger the "Home key." Is there a way to assign this to one of the volume switchers or maybe add a fourth button to the bar at the bottom or even double tap the home button maybe. I use it a lot and want it to be easily accessible. I opened an xda question. This question is almost a duplicate.

Answer

So this is the best solution I have come up with out a root. Basically install and pay for the application called Volkey scroll.

Then set the following settings.

enter image description here

enter image description here

  1. Uncheck "Enable persistent notification."

  2. Enable Automatic Start.

  3. Set speed of scrolling to 100/100.

  4. Selected action leap.

  5. Stop scrolling after a timeout 500 seconds

  6. Page size disable.

  7. Continuous pages checked

  8. The delay between pages 1

Now you only have to hold down the button until it stops at the top or bottom. Sometimes you have to press it more then once to get this to work for example in Google Photos not sure why. Now to adjust the volume you have to disable the app temporarily which is annoying or add it to the menu bar which isn't to bad.

So basically here is the deal someone created a plugin for this in older versions of android here. I can't confirm or deny if this works. Here is another app and a reddit thread.

For chrome you can set you javascript home bookmark to do the following. javascript:window.scrollTo(0,0) which fixes Chrome.

This is volume scroll application and it appears to essentially emulating scrolling using accessibility and displaying it on screen.

privacy - How can I automatically clear my browsing data when I exit Chrome?

I don't like having my searches and web history hanging around forever. Therefore, I wonder: Is it possible to automatically clear browsing data on exit in Google Chrome? If it cannot be done with Chrome, do you know of any other good web browsers with this capability?

P.S. I am not willing to root my device just for this purpose. Therefore, I'm looking for a solution which does not require root access.

There is also the PDAdb.net Rom Respository, although I don't think it's as user friendsly as the AndroidSpin db.

Last (and least relevant to your question) is theunlockr's list of Android Roms (I just thought it was worth mentioning).

sim unlocking - Will resetting my unlocked phone to factory settings lock it again?

I have an unlocked G1 that is freaking out on me in various ways. If I "restore factory settings" am I going to wind up locking it?

Answer

Normally unlocked phones are unlocked for good. I wouldn't expect a factory reset to change it. (See also: Unlocked Galaxy i7500, Reset Will Remove it?)

It's not 100% certain, though. For example, some Galaxy S users had their phones re-locked when updating from 2.1 to 2.2, which is a somewhat similar process to doing a factory reset.

You could always do a backup through ClockworkMod or something (and back it up to your computer first) in case it does get re-locked, so that you could restore it to the previous unlocked state. That requires root, however. (Root can sometimes be undone by a factory reset, but not if you have a custom ROM that came pre-rooted).

If you have the unlock code from when you originally unlocked it, that code should still work to unlock it again if it gets re-locked.

applications - Unwanted apps auto installing without me doing anything. How to stop them?

I have a micromax phone and its autoinstalling some apps. I dont know weather these apps are installed from play store or from the micromax "app center" (which I never used). This problem started about one week ago although I dont remember doing anything which may have started this problem ... Everyday the same apps get installed and I uninstall them as quickly as possible to prevent them from spreading Viruses in my phone. The apps include: Clean Master, UC News, Superb Cleaner etc etc. I suspect that these apps are getting installed by some inbuilt malware created by Micromax itself because Clean Master was installed when I brought the phone but at that time I had unistalled it.

I saw a previous question which showed how to make a certain folder unwriteable but in my case I dont even know which folder should I block.

Please help me and tell what steps should I take the next time I see these apps on my phone.

Further info: phone model: Micromax E481 Android version: 5.1 lollipop.

Answer

The symptoms listed in the question indicate that the malware has infected the ROM (system partition most likely) or it was already shipped with the ROM and now has begun to show its color.

In your particular case, as your hunch proved it to be correct, it appears to be App Center app which was acting as the malware. Disabling it stopped those installations.

If anyone has identified such malware as a system app which cannot be uninstalled, see if you can disable it from GUI. To disable it, go to Settings app → Apps → (three dots line, if exists → Shows System) All apps → your app → Disable.

If the Disable button is greyed out and if you don't have root access, than you can block the app from being run. You would first have to identify the package name of that malware app. You can use an app, such as AppXplore to know the package name. For example, in the screenshot here the package name of the app Android Live Wallpapers is com.android.wallpaper which is listed below the title of the app. You can find so for your malware too.

After that, setup in PC, enable and execute the commands:

adb shell pm hide PACKAGE # for Android Lollipop
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 PACKAGE # for Android Marshmallow and Nougat. This is bit tricky. Some reports its result positive, while others, negative.
adb shell pm disable-user PACKAGE # alternative to aforesaid second command for Android 5.0 and above
adb shell pm block PACKAGE # for Android Kitkat
adb shell reboot

PACKAGE should be substituted by the package name of the malware app.

Know that if you have issues identifying the malware app you may have to try a few things, such as

  • monitoring the network using a firewall or a system monitor to single out that app, such as through OS Monitor app, or

  • by identifying system apps with signature not matched with your OEM's and Google's and than analyze which amongst the leftovers might be the malware.

  • perhaps scanning the phone with some anti-malware tool from Play Store could help as well

  • lastly, if the malware app was stupid enough to leave the installer package name as its own package name, than provided you still have at least one of the apps installed automatically (like Clean Master) by that malware, you could do:

adb shell pm list packages -i PACKAGE

This would show some package name next to installer=. If it is null than you got to try something else until you figure out the package name of the malware app.

If you've root access, you can choose to disable or remove the malware app. There are many apps in Play Store, such as Titanium Backup, System App Remover, and the likes which can remove or disable a system app. Use any of them to remove that malware. Be very careful, since removing a system app may make your phone non-bootable and that means, taking a trip to service center of your OEM or getting yours hands more dirty.

At last, if you can install a custom ROM or if you are sure your stock ROM was clean and you have access to it, than by all means, get the device flashed by yourself or those who can do so for you. Running a system already compromised by a malware is a risky business.

And keep the Unknown sources under Settings → Security disabled, to remain on safe side.

4g - Enable LTE on Google Nexus 7 (2013) LTE tablet

I have a brand new Google Nexus 7 (2013) LTE tablet and failed or enabling LTE on it.

I had two cards (microSIM for Nexus and nanoSIM for iPad Mini) from the very same LTE-enabled local (Poland) carrier Aero2. Both are inserted to respectful devices, both devices are in the same place (same network coverage) and iPad Mini catches LTE signal (and its amazing speed) with no problems, while my Nexus falls back to HSPA+ at most, only sometimes uses 3G and never runs on LTE.

Is there any extra switch on this particular device or Android system (was on iPad Mini) to enable LTE?

EDIT: Of course, I followed step-by-step guide on this subject available at Google Nexus Help.

Answer

While unlikely, it's possible that the Nexus 7 doesn't support your local LTE network. It seems like Aero2 only operates LTE on 900MHz and 2500MHz (Take that with a grain of salt though; it may be incorrect or incomplete).

The Nexus 7 2013 apparently doesn't support either of those frequencies. Oddly enough, apparently neither does the iPad Mini.

You may want to contact Aero2 or whatever local providers and find out which frequencies (or "bands") they operate in your area. It doesn't matter if their network or SIM cards are "100% certified for the Nexus 7", they may not operate the appropriate frequencies in your area specifically. Rather than ask "Do you support the N7?", ask them "What LTE bands are operational in the area with the postal code [your postal code]?"

If your area should have a band that's listed on the GSMArena page for the Nexus 7, then you may have problems with your device. If not, then you may want to find a carrier that supports LTE on the appropriate bands in your area.

rom flashing - Flash a smartphone with vanilla Android ROM

Is it possible to flash a smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy SIII or an LG Optimus 4X with a vanilla Android ROM like the one that has been flashed on Galaxy Nexus or Motorola phones (I think)?

I am asking because manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC tend to make ROMs for their smartphones and tablets with preinstalled launchers like Touchwiz or HTC Sense. They explain their decision by saying that they want to make their devices to look unique against their rival devices. The problem is that Android updates for their phones and tablets get delayed and there are incidents in which some devices - which are more than capable of running the upcoming version of Android - fall way behind or never get updated at all.

So, what I am basically asking here is if there is a way to install vanilla Android, excluding CyanogenMod or any other modified vanilla ROMs, on an Android based smartphone?

Answer

Well Google only develops "vanilla" Android (called AOSP for Android Open Source Project ) for some selected phones (the Nexus Series).

Manufacturers use this as base for their phone's OS. So you probably won't get a "vanilla" Rom from your manufactures, but there are probably a few AOSP-based Ports for your phone. (CyanogenMod is also based on AOSP) Rom-Developers tend to use an existing ROM like AOKP or Cyanogen as base because it's already compatible with a lot of devices. Porting "vanilla" AOSP is quite difficult and time-consuming because it lack's drivers and phone-specific code.

gmail - How can I install the Google Apps Package (Play Store, ...) on my Android device?

I have recently installed a custom ROM and cannot find the Play Store. It seems like all apps that belong to Google are missing.

How can I install the Google Apps Package (Play Store, ...) on my Android device?

Answer

Only Android devices that are licensed by the Open Handset Alliance contain the so called Google Apps. Usually people associate apps like Google Maps, Google Play Store, etc. with Android, but because of the open-source nature of Android, manufactures can sell Android devices without Google Apps and therefore avoid to pay the license fee.

Custom ROMs

At first cyanogenmod shipped its ROM with pre-installed Google Apps. In September 2009 the founder of Cyanogen received a cease and desist letter from Google, demanding that the Google Apps not be included in the team's ROMs, since the ROM could be ported to devices which are not licensed to have the Google Apps. In turn, that would bypass the requirement for the devices to be licensed. For a few days, development on the ROM ceased, there were outcries from Android users all over the Internet, and many bloggers suspected Google had just shot itself in the foot.

Eventually, an alternate method was found, whereby Google Apps are not included in the ROM proper but the Google Apps which came with a device would be backed up by the device's custom recovery or another app, and then re-installed onto the device once the new ROM was flashed. This would therefore "Google-ify" one's ROM.

Source

Generally speaking:

First download the package corresponding to your version of android. Currently (november 2015), there are several "distributors" of Gapps available. Each typically offers a set of packages per android version, each package with more content. The apps in the packages range from a lite package with the basic apps (~100MB) to all of googles apps(200+MB). The applications themselves are untouched.

  • If you don't want to or cannot root your device:

    1. Flash the Gapps (Google Apps Package) zip package with a custom recovery.

You may first need to flash a custom recovery (like CWM or TWRP) using a PC tool such as Fastboot or Odin/Heimdall. This flashing in turn may require an unlocked bootloader on the phone.

Some stock recoveries will let you "update with adb". Just install adb, then adb command to install is:adb sideload gapps.zip--assuming the package is in the adb folder and is called gapps.zip

You may also install a custom recovery like in the unrooted case. Root typically allows android apps to flash a new recovery (i.e. without a pc).

OR

Install a ROM with the Google Framework, if it exists for your device. Though many ROM developers have followed CyanogenMod's example of separating distribution.

If you flash a Gapps ROM, it may be possible to re-flash with another non-Gapps ROM afterwards while retaining the Gapps. This assumes the android versions are compatible. Most users capable of flashing a ROM will be capable of flashing Gapps separately.

samsung galaxy s 4 - How to open PDF from Notification bar and fix "Cannot open file" error?

I have searched and searched for a solution to this problem, please help. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.2.2 along with the Chrome browser.

Steps to replicate:

  1. Navigate to: http://www.buzzbuzzbingo.com/Holidays/Halloween_Images/

  2. Click "Download and Print" to start download of PDF file.

  3. Notice notification that says "Starting downloading..."

  4. Open notification bar and see that the download has completed.

  5. Click the downloaded PDF file and receive "Cannot open file" error message and the notification bar closes.

Long clicking the downloaded PDF does not offer options for choosing which app to open the file. I have installed Adobe Reader and using that to navigate to the downloaded file will open the file just fine. Same with Polaris Office. I would like to be able to open the PDF from the notification bar. Alternatively if I could view the PDF directly in Chrome, that would be acceptable.

Answer

It's a combination of a PDF and a browser issue. Some PDFs work fine while others do not across different browsers.

Downloading the PDF you mentioned, here are the results using different browsers:

  • Chrome: Cannot open PDF from notification

  • Boat Browser: Cannot open PDF from notification

  • Dolphin: Can open PDF from notification

Downloading a different PDF from another site, here are the results using different browsers:

  • Chrome: Can open PDF from notification

  • Boat Browser: Can open PDF from notification

  • Dolphin: Can open PDF from notification

UPDATE 2013-10-11: According to Scott's findings, this is a PDF issue. The Content-Type header of the problematic PDF is application/x-download, while the working PDF is application/pdf.

If you control the server which is serving these PDFs, you can switch the Content-Type header to allow it to open in all browsers. PHP example:

In PHP this was previously broken when sending:

 header('Content-Type: application/x-download');

Switch this to this header to work:

 header('Content-Type: application/pdf');

downloading - Google play stuck on "Waiting for network..." when installing an app on mobile data

I recently bought a Meizu m3 note. Everything works fine in the play store (after I put the SIM in), except the downloading on mobile data connection.

I can browse, search apps and request to install. But the download won't start. It's stuck on the "Waiting for network..." message. See screen cap below.

When switching to WiFi, everything works OK.

Answer

It seems that when disabling Data on WLAN only, in the Download app, Google Play's app download started. See screen cap.

Strange that the Download app and Google Play are connected.

samsung - After flashing TWRP with Odin, nothing happens and the OEM recovery is still there

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S5, and after flashing the TWRP with Odin 3.07 and 3.10 I'm finding that my recovery is still the default. I'm using these instructions exactly.

Android system Recovery <3e>

It's as if nothing happened, how do I resolve this?

Answer

Before you flash the recovery, untick the Auto Reboot option in ODIN. Then flash the recovery. After flashing in done, reboot your device directly to recovery mode from download mode by pressing Vol up + Power + Home button together. Now you will see the TWRP recovery is booted in your device. Now you can reboot normally and your TWRP will be installed.

applications - How can I Run/Download Android Apps on a PC?

I tried running Android 4.1.1 in VirtualBox, but it was too slow and sluggish to do anything. I came across Windroy which runs Android as a Windows app, but it won't run Google Play.

I want to run this on my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try BlueStacks and tell us how it goes.

Can I make eBuddy be the default instant messanger?

Was wondering if anyone knows of a way to make eBuddy be the default instant messenger. I'm running on a Galaxy S Captivate. When you click on a contact's icon, it pops up a little toolbar with actions, such as: Call, View, Text, Email, IM, Navigate. Clicking on IM launches the built in IM client from AT&T. I'd like it to message the contact using eBuddy instead.

notifications - Get rid of 'battery-low' popup after some delay?

I'm using an Android phone (a Motorola Defy+ running CM9) with OsmAnd as a map solution mounted on my motorcycle (it just shows the map and a gpx-track as a driving hint).

It's not connected to a charger yet and I don't mind when it runs out of battery (I have spare ones).

However there's this "battery low" message popping up at 15% downwards. It covers a huge part of the map and stays there until you hit the OK button which does not work with gloves on and during the ride at all.

That remaining 15% still give >1h runtime which I want to enjoy withouth nagging popups!

Is there a way to hide it completely or get rid of it after some seconds automatically?

enter image description here

Answer

That is hard-coded into the framework am afraid.

Look in frameworks/base/core/java/android/os/Power.java

public static final int LOW_BATTERY_THRESHOLD = 10;

The alternative is to roll-your-own ROM to do this, there's a broadcast intent for battery low warnings (ACTION_BATTERY_LOW) but that's only for system signed apps AFAIK and cannot be intercepted.

The alternative is to listen for the ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED broadcast and perhaps using Tasker, just to mute the battery warning sound...

app2sd - Why do I have less internal storage space after moving Google+ to my SD card?

I'm having a puzzling problem. I was pleased to see that the latest version of Google+ now supports being moved to the SD card.

However, I just installed it on my HTC Desire and, having moved it to the SD card, find I now have 2MB less internal storage space on the phone than I did before! Since the previous version was over 12MB, surely the new version should have freed up a significant chunk of internal storage space? I thought this would help address the problem of constantly running low on space, but it seems to have made it worse. Would be grateful for any suggestions / advice!

Answer

Version 1.0.7 is significantly larger than previous versions. Even after moving to the SD card I'm showing 14.5MB taking up system storage. That'll account for your 2MB reduction in space.

Google generally hasn't allowed for their apps to be moved to the SD card, presumably so they can be sure widgets will work or other performance considerations. However, since this version weighs in at over 24MB I guess their hand was forced.

app2sd - How do I find out if an app can be moved to the SD card before I install it?

Is there a way I can do this? Too many times I install an app, only to uninstall it, because it can't be moved to SD.

Answer

if your phone is rooted you can use link2sd :

play store link

Home page

but you'll have to partition your SD card first using mini tool partition wizard

and here's the Tutorial on how to partition your SD card

This Can move immovable and -of course- movable apps more efficiently than app2sd and saves more space because normal moving moves a small part of the app to SD card ,while Link2SD moves a big part of the app(but not all of it(user experience))

If your phone is not rooted:

1.Market apps : you can't know because market downloads apps and installs them instantly.

2.apps which you have their APK you may find out by looking in the manifest.xml file inside the APK in android:installLocation="auto" as @Rafael said.

backup - Can adb be used to recover SMS messages while in permanent "Safe Mode"?

I have a non-rooted Droid X2 that is in permanent "Safe mode", but I want to recover SMS messages. SMS Backup and Restore will NOT work because safe mode only allows system apps to run.

adb shell will get me into the phone, but does not allow me to get to the SMS database:

[rjt@pc232 workspace]$ adb shell
$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32.9-00008-gc406305 (hudsoncm@il93lnxdroid80) (gcc version 4.4.0 (GCC) ) #2 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jan 24 22:54:19 CST 2012

$ cd /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
$ pwd

/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
$ ls
opendir failed, Permission denied
$ su -l root
su: permission denied
$ sudo
sudo: permission denied
$ sudo su -
sudo: permission denied
$ sudo su -l root

sudo: permission denied
$

Since SMS Backup and Restore is allowed to access my SMS messages when in normal mode, is "Safe mode" blocking my access or the fact that this phone is not rooted?

Can I root the phone without losing my existing SMS messages?

Answer

You will be unable to do this without a rooted device, as the /data directory can only be read by the Android system, and apps can also read their own /data/data/ directory only.

Android devices do not come with sudo, and you need to be rooted to use su as it switches to the root shell (on unrooted ROM's, su can't switch to the root user, as the kernel denies it).

If you do find a way to root the device, (which may be difficult), you can mount the /data partition as RW, then you can copy files from it.

Use these command to remount the /data patition:

su

mount -o remount,rw /data

The su command can only be executed on a rooted device.

EDIT:

Just for clarification, the SMS Backup & Restore app uses an API call to get the SMS messages via the Messaging app, hence the need for the READ_SMS permission.

EDIT2:

Most rooting methods don't wipe the device data, however some do. You would have to google for a way to root your droid 2 however, and see if it wipes the data.

rooting - Kedacom USB Device doesnt work with fastboot Nexus 5x

Trying to flash TWRP and root my Nexus 5X.

I'm running the N 7.1.1 preview.

I've got the adb and fastboot files downloaded and allegedly working

adb devices

and

adb reboot bootloader

work as they should.

The Android bootloader info shows that I'm in FASTBOOT MODE, SECURE BOOT is enabled, and DEVICE STATE is unlocked.

But

fastboot devices

doesn't list anything at all.

I'm running windows 10, and when viewing Device Manager, it shows my bootloader-ed nexus 5x as a "Kedacom USB Device" and "Android Bootloader Interface" in the sub list.

But, it won't allow me to replace the drivers with the Google USB Driver, it doesn't even recognize the driver files in the extracted google driver files I downloaded from the Android Studio software.

Not sure what the issue is, but I'm thinking it's an issue with the driver on my end, but then why did the adb half of this work by default?

Answer

As for my phone (Xiaomi Mi5) the cause of this problem was driver. I couldn't delete driver and istall another one because Win10 install driver faster. The decision was a changing OS on to Ubuntu or Windows (7, 8.1) than device was not recognized. And install drivers from Android SDK.

Is there a zoom and timer functionality on Nexus S camera?

If not, is there another app that gives this functionality?

Answer

There is no timer built in, but you can crop images in the standard gallery app which is essentially the same as digital zoom.

There are a number of apps which list timer functionality (I haven't tried them myself so can't verify first hand how well they work):

external sd - How to prevent Android from creating LOST.DIR on SD card?

After the phone restarts, there is a LOST.DIR folder created on the external SD card. Is it possible not to create this folder if nothing is lost?

Answer

LOST.DIR is just a storage space (directory) for files that were recovered upon boot. You can safetly remove it with no problems. The sysytem keeps it just in case you want to get your recovered currupted files back.

A quick google search yielded:

As for preventing it from being created, just prevent the SD card from becoming corrupted. Here are some things to keep in mind while using an SD card:

  • Always eject before removal

  • Never remove while files are being modified

  • Never remove from Android device while device is on

If you have your device connected to the computer, the SD card will usually automatically mount itself on the computer. Remember to eject it before disconnecting the device.

This thread has a ton of good info. Basically the gist of it is, if you are following all of the precautions to keep the SD card from getting corrupted (ejecting before removal, ect...) then the SD card is partially incompatible with your device. If you move to a higher class SD card, the problem usually goes away on its own.

dialer - Save a number during a phone call

How can I save a number during a phone call? The scenario is that I'm calling someone to get the phone number of someone else. If I just type the number in the dialer, it disappears when the call ends.

Opening some kind of notepad application is cumbersome both saving and retrieving: tap home, tap applications, find the application, start a new note, type number, end call, copy number, paste number into the dialer (how to do the last step is another question)

Answer

I found that Number Saver is the closest to a solution. It adds an icon to the notification area when on call and will even automatically switch to speakers when run during a call

networking - Restricting an app to only send internet traffic but not receive that back?

Is there a way or app to restrict some apps on my Android, or the whole device, to only send internet data packets but not receive them back?

I want to confuse a game app by doing this. It restricts me to have only two games simultaneously. But I want to suppress this behavior by opening game in normal way, blocking incoming traffic and then sending three or more requests to start a game. The app errors, but after restarting, all three or more games will start.

I have a rooted phone.

Answer

It's possible, but far from easy to achieve. There are multiple approaches we can use to block (or at least try to block) incoming traffic.

But blocking one way traffic doesn't make sense in most cases. An app sending TCP packets but not receiving back responses will consider itself disconnected from internet. However, you may try for your particular case if it works.

Note: All of below discussed methods need root access.

UID BASED BLOCKING:

Android uses Linux kernel which has a builtin firewall netfilter that can be used to filter network traffic. There is an iptables module named owner that filters traffic based on its UID / GID. Every app on Android is a UNIX user and has a unique UID.

But the problem is that owner module is only valid for outgoing traffic i.e. the packets generated locally. IP packets coming from some other machine don't carry owner information with them. So the owner module applied to incoming traffic should fail or it should give a warning as explained here. To measure per-app incoming / outgoing network usage, Android patched kernel to include qtaguid module. But iptables wasn't patched to use the module from command-line. Also see related details in How to view network traffic requested by app?.

However owner module works for some of the incoming TCP packets received back with TCP Flags, which may block incoming traffic fully or partially:

# iptables -I INPUT -m owner --uid-owner -j DROP

* To remove the rule, replace -I with -D

Probably the reason is that same TCP packets are returned back for Handshake and Bye but I'm not sure about that. However be ensured that it doesn't work for 100% TCP/UDP traffic. See escaped traffic:

# iptables -I INPUT -j LOG --log-uid --log-prefix 'INCOMING '
# dmesg -w | grep INCOMING | grep -vE 'IN=lo|=5353|=1900|ICMP' | grep -v UID=

Some firewall apps block outbound traffic using VPN on Android. VpnService API also makes use of UIDs and SOcket_MARKs to control traffic in routing table / RPDB, just before leaving the device.

PORT BASED BLOCKING:

More certain and complex ways of blocking incoming traffic rely on watching all the network sockets being created and deleted. A socket is a combination of IP address and port.

To get some basic idea of this approach, let's take example of Firefox app on my phone, with UID 10081:

# ss -4tuapne | awk '/uid:10081/ { print $5,$1,$2,$7.$8 }'
192.168.1.11:39910 tcp ESTAB users:(("mozilla.firefox",pid=22370,fd=163)) uid:10081
...
...
# iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 39910 -j DROP

This will block all incoming traffic to port 39910 being used by Firefox app. But this approach is not practical because creation and deletion of sockets is taking place at such a high pace that even in native code some packets would be missed. And at the next moment the same port will be assigned to some other app's socket. This seems only possible if the local port is fixed, but for normal apps, random system selected available (TCP / UDP) port is being used for socket creation (can be controlled with ip_local_port_range).

You can find some more details View network traffic requested by app.

IP BASED BLOCKING:

This methods works best if you know the source IP address of packets. Find all servers your app is trying to connect on internet (e.g. by blocking app for outgoing traffic) and block them using iptables source IP filtering, if they are not a hundred in number and they don't keep on changing frequently:

# iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -s -j DROP

applications - What if you accidentally deleted some important apps and can't install them back?

What if you accidentally deleted some important apps and can't install them back because Google Play doesn't have them? For example android system, com.android dun server and com.android.lgsetup wizard (i.e. basically apps that are originally there). And every few seconds this message will appear:

"Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

And I cannot even go the browser or Task Killer because every time I do, it will force quit. How can I reinstall those apps? I think I cleared all data for those but I did not clear the browser and so why can't I open the browser?

Do I really need to send it for repair or can I fix it?

Factory reset is disabled by kill switch on LG L16C

I cannot do a factory reset on a LGL16c, it comes up with screen to confirm reset and agreeing to wipe data, I say yes to both. Then it comes up with a screen that says

Factory reset is disabled by Kill switch

I reboots and nothing happens. I cannot reset through settings on phone, security, it says factory reset disabled by server policy.

I found out that all new smartphones have this new "Kill switch" installed by all manufacturers because a new law passed prevents a thief from accessing a phone if there is a password on it and trying to factory reset it.

Is there a way to bypass the kill switch if I have the phone and there is no password and I want to wipe data and reset phone?

Is it possible to change password on the phone itself for gmail/market/other google apps?

I think this is a general question that would apply to all Android phones though I have a HTC Desire Z.

I cannot find a section on any of the settings to change the password for the Google account used for gmail, Android Market or any of the other google account dependent services and features on the phone. Surely this is a glaring omission?

I would expect a feature to be present on the phone and for extra security, have it ask me for the existing password in order to allow me to change to a new one.

Obviously I can change the password when logged into Google in a browser on a PC/Mac but this is an unnecessary procedure - surely we are all becoming increasingly mobile-centric, so shouldn't it be possible to change it on the phone?

I have searched here and on Google, the only answers I can find are things like:

  • people who need to enter the new password on the phone after changing it to this new password when on a PC or Mac logged into Google on a browser for example.

  • people who want to change their actual google account, i.e. use a different one

But I can't find anything about a section on the phone itself to change the password for Gmail,Android Market and other google account dependent services and features on the phone!

Answer

Not a perfect solution but you can change your password by opening you Google account/Gmail on your phone browser.

4.3 jelly bean - Boot from an image in PC using Android device

I've a Redmi 1S (Hongmi 1S) running MIUI v5 (Jellybean v4.3). I have a Bitdefender rescue disk ISO file. I want to boot this rescue disk using my Android phone, just like a bootable USB drive.

  • How can I boot from this file in PC using my Android device. What are the necessary requirements?

  • Will Android handle this as an ISO file, or will it simply store it as an unknown file type?

I had earlier asked this question on the MIUI forums, but by the next day itself it was stamped irrelevant and was closed/deleted.

As there is no specific date for an upgrade, my device may or may not update to Android 4.4 Kitkat or MIUI v6. So still, will it change with the update?

google play store - Is apkmirror.com safe?

Is it safe to download and install Google Play from apkmirror.com? How can I check this is a safe download?

Backstory:

I had to factory reset my original Samsung Galaxy Tab as it refused to start up. After the reset, I haven't been able to update Google Play. Every time I try, it crashes with '(process com.android.vending) has stopped working'.

I've seen multiple references to the site, but nothing official from Google.

Answer

Apkmirror.com is run by the same people behind AndroidPolice.com, one of the biggest Android news websites. All uploads are manually vetted and approved, and only free apps are allowed so you won't find any 'cracked' apks or 'warez'.

As you already have the Play Store installed, only an apk signed with the same key as the currently installed version will be able to upgrade the app so this is an extra verification of the apk you download. Therefore, if you download the app from Apkmirror.com you should be safe.

Personally, this one of the only sites I would trust to download apks from.

5.0 lollipop - Should Dalvik Cache be wiped in Android OS that supports ART?

When switching custom ROMs (in ART), is it necessary to wipe the Dalvik Cache?

Wiping the Cache is necessary, but should wiping Dalvik (which doesn't exist in Android Lollipop and afterward) be necessary?

What impact will it cause if we wipe Dalvik (something not present)?

In ART, what does the Dalvik cache contains? (is it an empty folder?)

Answer

The Dalvik Cache is still in use under ART, it is the location where the .oat files (they contain the compiled application, compiled during installation ) are stored, they just didn't change the name. Source: 1

So Wiping may be necessary if ART related files were updated. Because it does no harm other than compiling all applications again, I suggest just doing it to be safe.

wi fi - Can I use a modern Android phone with no phone plan?

I'm new to the Android platform, but am looking into doing some development for Android 2.x, with the hope of publishing an app to the Android App Market eventually. I'd like to be able to test my app on "real" hardware, but I already have an iPhone, which is plenty expensive itself, and I don't want to pay for an entire second cell phone plan just to test my code. So my question is, is it possible to buy an unlocked Android phone and operate it entirely over wi-fi? If so, what features (besides the obvious, like making calls), will I be missing out on?

How to get mDNS working for Chrome on Android?

Is there a way to connect to http://mylaptop.local/ using Chrome on Android, or is there another browser that works?

I travel from network to network with my laptop and my phone and I often have to connect my phone to a website on my laptop. With Safari on an iPhone I can simply use http://mylaptop.local/ (usually hitting reload on an open browser window), but with my Android device I always have to figure out the current IP of my laptop punch it in by hand and connect to it (I don't control many of the networks I'm on and they don't seem to ever have DNS integrated with DHCP).

I've searched a for an answer and it seems most people simply hack around the issues using static DNS, or they control DHCP and DNS, neither of which apply for my situation. Also I see code libraries for supporting mDNS (and other zeroconf stuff) in a specific Android application, so perhaps there's a Chrome add on out there, or some other browser that supports it?

Also, is there any official word on device wide support for mDNS and the .local domain on Android? I had trouble finding that as well.

Samsung Galaxy S3 keeps losing network connection and need to restart phone to reconnect

I've had my S3 for around 6 months and never had a problem. But in the last couple of days it seems to be randomly losing connection to network (T-Mobile): I have to restart my phone to reconnect. Sometimes this only lasts a few minutes before dropping out again.

Anybody else had this problem? I have no idea whats causing it. I have changed nothing on the phone, and the area I am in has good coverage.

I dont get any error msg and all seems fine -- until I try to use it to access Internet; then it tells me "no internet connection" and the internet data signal disappears. If I try to text the text just fails to send, and I cannot receive or make any calls. People who ring say it goes straight to the mailbox.

rooting - I've installed a custom recovery image, but not yet rooted my phone. How can I install SuperSU and subscribe to automatic updates?

I own a Samsung smartphone. I'm running Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean". I've also installed ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.4.5.

Each time I exit ClockworkMod Recovery, it offers to root my phone. I haven't accepted this offer yet.

Binaries are not yet available for the currently-maintained fork of Superuser. So I guess I'll install SuperSU instead.

OK; fine. So I want to install SuperSU. I also want to start getting automatic updates — in other words, as new versions of SuperSU are released, I want the Google Play store app to install them automatically.

Please note that I would rather not boot Android up even once with su installed but with no su GUI installed. Doing such a thing would be a security risk which I'd rather avoid if possible.

What steps should I take, and in what order?

Answer

Follow these steps:

  1. Download the flashable ZIP for SuperSU app into your device. It would have both the APK as well as su binary. Choose the stable build .

  2. Boot into the custom Recovery → flash the ZIP → Reboot.

  3. After the boot animation you would see "Android is upgrading" dialog for few seconds. Once booted to Home screen, launch SuperSU app.

  4. Go to Settings and scroll down until you see CLEANUP section.

    IMG:

  5. Choose Reinstall. It would remove SuperSU app from the system but not the su binary.

  6. Go to Play Store and install SuperSU app. Since the app is now installed from Play Store, you would definitely receive updates to the app as long as they are pushed to Play Store and are compatible with your device.

I have Samsung Galaxy S+ (i9001) and the other day had a prompt from WhatsApp to update the app.

The update download but the installation fails and the app cannot be opened.

I tried downloading the APK of the latest version and even many of older versions but the issue is still there.

I know WhatsApp said they are ceasing support for Android 2.1 and 2.2, but my phone has 2.3.6, so it shouldn't be affected.

How to fix?

Answer

Yes, officially they said they won't support android 2.1 and 2.2, but since the last update only devices with Android 4.0 and above are supported.

Try installing 2.16.259 over 2.16.225:

  1. Download APKs for WhatsApp version 2.16.225 and 2.16.259.

  2. Install 225 first, don't open it

  3. Reboot the phone

  4. Install 259

But soon or later these versions will be dropped as well.

samsung galaxy s 3 - Why does Battery Doctor say my battery is 50% charged while Android says 23%?

Battery Doctor says my battery is 50% charged while Android says 23%:

enter image description here

Is there any reason why? I use a 4200mah Extended Battery on Samsung Galaxy SIII with Android 4.1.2.

Answer

There are two sources for reading the battery capacity

  • From the battery files

  • From the ROM

I learnt this when I saw a similar but smaller discrepancy on my new phone using 3c Toolbox and the developer clarified this on mail. To quote from 3C Toolbox developer mail

In Android, one can get the stock hard-coded battery capacity from battery profiles, an hidden API in Android. That’s the one of the 2 sources the app uses.

The other source is in the kernel, usually under /sys/devices/power_supply/battery/charge_full_design

On my device path is different. To know the path on your device, from 3C Toolbox, tap request support from Help and support menu. An email will be generated to the developer having information about your device, including battery_info.txt. This file amongst other things specifies the path of second source

Since you are using an extended battery, I would guess that the app is reading from the ROM and Android from the battery files (original battery is 2100 mAh and extended battery is 4200 mAh and the battery percentage readings are nearly half).

This is the only explanation I can think of

Edit: For more details , please see Where are the battery capacity files located

applications - Multitasking solutions to (not-rooted) Android OS and Apps out there?

For here i mean multitasking visually, which means the ability to see more than one Apps at a time.

Other than Samsung's Multi Window, Popup Play (or by the Stick It! app), Pen Window, or the LG's QSlide, Slide Aside, and Dual Window, are there any other multitasking solutions else from the major vendors out there?

I would only consider reliable solutions, which means the original untwisted rom (i know original doesn't necessarily means reliable, but as least i got warranty), or by certain android apps which requires no-rooting, or any other solutions with clear lines of instructions or codes.

lineageos - Difference between Lineage OS and Cyanogenmod : how does it affect current users?

Cyanogen said it plans to cease developing its open-source version of Android and will shutter its services by the end of the month. The company's blog mentions,

As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than [December 31].

  1. Do users get new update as OTA while using CyanogenMod, or do they have to completely erase and flash a new ROM? (That requires flashing new firmware, ROM, recovery etc.)

  2. What will happen, if users are continue using CyanogenMod after December 31, 2016?

  3. What about bugs, security, stability?

Answer

Here are some answer, but as I'm not Cyanogen representative, they only engage me.

  1. Users will not receive OTA updates as soon as they stop maintaining their software stack. You keep on using your last Cyanogen ROM and hence receiving no more security updates, or you can change the ROM you install. For changing, you could use an entirely new one and try to wait some guys start a fork of the project (this will, for sure, occur: perhaps you'll be one of them). With a fork it is possible they will choose to support upgrade from the last Cyanogen.

  2. Nothing, you just will not receive updates and you will risk more and more because of missing security updates.

  3. As you will not be able to update, your phone will keep the same software stack as it is. Bugs, security and stability will stay as it is in your last Cyanogen. For bugs & stability, you don't care but for security it is a pain (as security will go down as time goes on).

backup - How do I export Telegram contacts to my phone?

I'm new here.

My little brother accidentally touched the "reset factory" button in settings, and now I don't have my contacts on my phone! I have 1500 (almost 400 business) contacts with more than 670 profile pictures!

I rooted my phone and used recovery tools in W7, but nothing worked for me! I just recovered 10 old contacts, so God bless the Telegram app because I saw my contacts there, but there are no contacts in my phone app. Is there any way to import contacts from the Telegram app to my phone app?

If possible please tell me how to fix this issue. Any guidance also in programming issues like linux terminals will be accepted in my way.

(Note: I used search in this site but there was nothing for my issue, just found a link that a buddy wrote there:

"Just install a contact backup software from google store like "+contact backup" and after that make a back up from your contacts."

But there's no app in the app store with that name!

applications - Reinstalling purchased apps on a new phone?

Possible Duplicate:
Move paid apps between devices?

My contract is getting close to finishing so I'll be upgrading to a new Android phone and giving my old phone to a family member.

When I move my Google account across to my new phone will I have to repurchase or just re-download my paid for apps?

Also will I'll have to remove the paid for apps from my old phone before it is associated with a new Google account?

Answer

You will not have to repurchase them if you associate the same Google account with the new device. They will be available in your market to re-download.

I don't know if you can have more then one phone associated with the same account, but I did not do anything when I got a new phone, except associate my google account to the new phone.

Can an android phone connect to both WiFi LAN (not necessarily connected to the Internet) and mobile data network at the same time? Or when it connects to one, does it have to disconnect from the other? My phone is Kyocera Hydro Icon with Android 4.4.2.

4.0 ice cream sandwich - Connecting to VPN forces having secure screen lock

Possible Duplicate:

I noticed that creating a VPN connection in ICS forces me to use a secure screen lock. I want to have Slide method for my screen lock, but it's disabled when I've set up a VPN connection. Is there a way to use a slide lock with a VPN configured?

Phone: Google Nexus S
OS: Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4

Answer

I had the same problem, but I found a solution.

I just chose Pattern, turned off the screen, turned it back on and clicked on Forgot in the lower-right corner. After I gave in my Google password it changed automatically back to slide.

In the settings the option "none" is still grayed-out but it's selected anywhere and it works.

networking - How to tell current frequency band?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace, with quad-band I believe. It is possible to see the current connection network type, e.g. UMTS, EDGE, etc, by going to Settings -> About Phone -> Status. But it does not tell which frequency band it is on. Is it possible to find out which frequency band (either exactly, or just which of the four major bands) that I am using?

Answer

Based on avirk's hint, I found a way. First press the code *#0011#

GSM example:

GSM900: IDLE
T: 10, B: 10
Rx Pwr: -94, Rx ual: -
Rx Lev: 21, Tx Lev: 0-
Speech VER: AMR EFR FR
VOC: AdaptiveRate

TS: 0
Temp: 68 Batt: 71 LNA: 0
Service: Available

It is obvious that it's using 900MHz band, from the "GSM900".

UMTS WCDMA example:

WCDMA: Idle
Rx CH: 10612, R: -94
Tx CH: 9662, Tx Pwr: -
EdIo: -6, RSCP: -98

SpeechVER: AMR EFR FR
RF: Sleep2
L1: PCH_Sleep
Drx cycle: 64, PSC: 392
Temp: 67 Batt: 69 LNA: 0
Service: Available

UMTS can use two different physical layers (low level radio) UMTS-FDD and UMTS-TDD. Android just shows WCDMA, which I think is the same as UMTS-FDD, but perhaps it can refer to both of them. By looking up the channel number here you can tell the frequency bands and whether it is UMTS-FDD or UMTS-TDD.

In the above example it is using UMTS-FDD, the down-link channel (Rx) is in the 2100MHz band and the up-link channel (Tx) is in the 1900MHz band.
