How can I find a saved Wi-Fi password?

I have an Android phone which is connected to a secured Wi-Fi hotspot. How can I find out the password of the hotspot from the phone?

Answer

On my phone, the credentials are stored in /data/wifi/bcm_supp.conf. You'll probably need root to see it directly on your phone but you may be able to use adb pull (requires the Android SDK) from your PC to get the file.

As noted in the comments, the location may vary based on your ROM or device (specifically the Wi-Fi chip; mine's a Broadcom). Check /data/wifi/, /data/etc/wifi/ and /data/misc/wifi/ for relevant config files if you don't find the ones suggested by eldarerathis or me.

5.0 lollipop - What kind of applications use internet on the background?

Viewed the list of applications that use Wi-FI and came across what is shown on the image below.

problem

What it is? Virus? Instead of Google I use F-Droid. Root is there, but only Total Commander and Titanium Backup are available. Phone - Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini. Rooted, twrp. In applications "10005" does not exist. Titanium Backup was deleted 2 month ago.

After installing Dr.Web 10005 disappeared. But from 15.11.2018 to 12.12.2018 "10074" exist.

Answer

Every Android app (including system apps) is a *NIX user and is assigned a unique UID within range 10000-19999 at the time of installation or during first boot (for pre-installed apps). That's how Android enforces Discretionary Access Control on apps.

The number you showed looks like UID of some app which has been removed now. You can check UIDs of installed apps from file /data/system/packages.list. UIDs near to 10000 are usually system apps or builtin Google/OEM/vendor apps.

If you have root, you can track/control apps' internet access based on their UIDs using Linux kernel's built-in firewall netfilter, which is controlled by userspace tool iptables. AFWall+ makes use of the same.

external sd - How to upgrade / swap SD card without losing data and installed apps?

I have 2GB Micro SD card in my Android and want to upgrade to 4GB.

How can I achieve it without losing anything from my 2GB card? I mostly use this card to store images/music and most of the apps.

Answer

First, turn off your phone's radio by entering Airplane Mode - usually this'll be by long-pressing the power button and selecting Airplane Mode.

Next on your homescreen, press MENU and click SETTINGS (or navigate in your preferred way). In SETTINGS, choose SD CARD & PHONE STORAGE. Press UNMOUNT to dismount your SD Card.

Now remove your SD card from the phone and insert it into your card reader on your PC.

Copy ALL the files to a folder of choice.

Insert your new 4 GB card into your cell phone and choose to FORMAT it from within the device. This is the safest course of action. Remove the new SD Card and use your PC to move/overwrite all data from the copy of the old card to the new one.

Re-insert your new card into the phone and reboot so that the scanning of the card takes place.

orientation - How to disable virtual keyboard when in landscape mode?

I have a Droid 2 (on Gingerbread); The device has a physical keyboard.

I use virtual keyboard in portrait mode sometimes, but never in landscape mode (since I have physical keyboard.)

Is there a way that would allow me to disable virtual keyboard when in landscape mode, but leave it available for portrait mode?

Pair two Bluetooth devices simultaneously

I am building an app for an Android tablet that will control an Arduino microcontroller board (paired via bluetooth). However, the tablet will also be paired via Bluetooth with my Android phone to share the phone's internet connection. Can I pair the devices this way simultaneously?

Answer

AFAIK, bluetooth connections can occur simultaneously as long as their operational bounds do not overlap. In other words, you cannot connect two bluetooth headsets at the same time, but you can connect a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse to the same device at the same time (I personally have tested this last scenario, and it works!)

So in your case, I assume the steps you would take would include making sure that the two communication streams don't require any of the same functionality, which sounds as if it would be possible, since one is strictly for internet availability. If you connect both and they won't pair with the device simultaneously, you probably won't be able to. But if they register as different types of devices (under different bluetooth "profiles", for example) you may be in luck!

Sorry there's nothing definitive. The bottom line here may be trial and error. If they don't work initially, you may be able to set up the Arduino to register under a different "profile" when it connects to the tablet, so as not to interfere with the internet connection coming from the phone.

rooting - Root Samsung Epic Galaxy 4G (SPH-D700) on FC09 Gingerbread?

I have been searching for a while and am trying to figure out if I can root the SPH-D700 on the FC09 update. I just cant find any information regarding that.

Id like to Root the phone, either if I have to update or downgrade, and even preferably be able to flash CyanogenMod 9, and update to ICS. I know this is possible on the phone, I just dont know if this FC09 update will prevent this or something.

I am trying to familiarize myself with this phone as its my freind's phone, and I am trying to root it for him, as he is still sitting with stock, and needs root for a few features.

So what do you guys believe would be the best way to go about this? Should I just get a root image of an earlier update to downgrade? and then just do the updates after I am rooted?

I am just not sure where I should start. Been searching this for most of the day, I just cant seem to find a definite answer yet.

Thanks for your time guys, Hope we can work this out.

Answer

Just about every Samsung device can be flashed with Odin, regardless of what firmware is installed on it at the time. For specific instructions you can refer to this XDA thread, which explains how to flash a rooted FC09 image:

  1. put your device into Download Mode

  2. Connect to your computer and make sure ODIN recognizes your device

  3. Flash the Clockworkmod.tar.md5. Make sure EVERYTHING is unchecked INCLUDING AUTOREBOOT!!!!

  4. Once ODIN does its thang, unplug your phone and pull the battery

  5. Now reboot into CWM Recovery by pressing and holding the power button, camera, and volume down button until the capacitive buttons at the bottom show

  6. Now locate the ROM.zip. It should be called DeodexedFC09.zip

  7. Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache Partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache, and if you want Wipe Batt Stats

  8. Now reboot, and you should be running Stock Rooted FC09!

ODIN: http://www.mediafire.com/?66csfeo1ce95ysw

CWM TAR: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655

Stock FC09: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580931

You should be able to get the Epic into download mode by doing the following:

You enter download mode by shutting device completely off. Then open the physical keyboard press and hold the 1 key and then press power for a few seconds.

Downgrading, rooting, and then updating seems unnecessarily complicated. The updates probably wouldn't apply on their own once the device was rooted, so you'd need to install them manually anyway. You might as well just install the image you want straight away instead, whether that's a stock one like the above linked image or CyanogenMod.

samsung galaxy s 2 - Part of touch screen is not working

This is a weird touch screen issue as only part (2 blocks) of the screen is not working. I tested the touch functionality via "Touch Test" and observed that 2 red zones are not responding to finger tap (see screenshot). Where there are 2 thin gaps (actually 2 lines) are responsive. This happened after an app update (15 apps). I didn't drop the phone during this period. So I am suspecting this might due to a software issue. What could cause this issue?

home screen shortcuts - Pinning Web Sites to Android Homescreen

Is there a way to pin websites to your homescreen in Android like an app? I know this can be done in iOS, Windows Phone, and Windows 8, but I don't see a way to accomplish it on a Nexus 7 Android device.

The closest I've been able to come is to set the sites I want pinned as bookmarks and place the bookmarks folder as a widget on the homescreen, but I'd prefer not to have the clutter of the bookmark folder there and just pin sites directly.

Answer

Android has a Bookmark widget that supports individual sites, and a Bookmarks widget that will display all of your bookmarks.

It looks like you don't want to use the Bookmarks widget, but rather an individual Bookmark.

There are 2 ways:

  1. From within Chrome: Bookmark the site you want to link to. Open the Bookmarks (via Menu > Bookmarks) and long-press the one you want to add. Select Add to home screen

  2. From the App Launcher: Go to Widgets and find Bookmark (it looks like a red flag with a star on mine) and add that to your home screen. You can then pick whichever bookmark you want.

Either way results in a direct link to the desired bookmarked website.

Mediaserver using excessive CPU time and battery

I've got a Nexus 4 on OS version 4.2.1 that suddenly started to drain it's battery very quickly. When looking in the battery usage I see "Mediaserver"eating 60% of the battery over time, with several minutes of CPU time logged and several hours of Keep Awake time. Typically the screen, phone idle or other services eat up the majority of battery life.

I tried closing all apps and charging it up, and sure enough overnight it still drained significant battery, again Mediaserver was the culprit as reported in the Battery usage chart; it had kept the device awake all night and drained 10% of my battery despite zero use. I haven't added a large number of files and I'm not playing music/etc so Mediaserver shouldn't be doing very much on the drive.

How can I stop Mediaserver from eating my battery life like this?

Answer

Killing all running apps didn't solve the problem, nor did disabling the automatic sync for Google account items like videos/photos (which I heard suggested for a similar battery issue).

What did work was simply rebooting the device by holding the power button and picking shut down. After rebooting Mediaserver no longer appears to use much of my battery in the usage chart and my charge lasts like it always did. So if you get the same issue, just reboot.

Push Notifications not working over WiFi on Google Devices

I have 3 Android devices at home: Nexus 4 Android 5.1.1, Nexus 5 Android 5.1.1 and Lenovo Yoga 2 Android 4.4.2, all connected to my WiFi. The Nexus devices simply cannot receive Push Notifications (Gmail, Hangouts...GCM?) while the Yoga tablet can. On mobile data both Nexus devices can receive push notifications. If I connect them to my workplace WiFi everything is fine.

All devices have all the apps up to date. I've tried resetting the Nexus 5 to the factory defaults but it doesn't help. I've tried restarting the phones a couple of times but still no luck. The router is an ASUS AC68U, latest Merlin, on a 1Gbps internet connection. The only things that changed in my environment in the past 2 weeks are: 5.1.1 update and I moved to 1Gbps internet.

Is this related to the new Play Services Update? Or Android 5.1.1? Can I somehow look deeper into this? Logcat? Any help is appreciated.

Answer

It looks like GCM Push Notifications don't work with IPv6. I disabled IPv6 entirely in my router and now everything is fine. Though IPv6 was enabled for the past two years and I didn't have any kind of issue. Let's hope a Play Services update fixes it.

5.0 lollipop - Nexus 4 Smart Lock Trusted Places is not there!

I have just updated to Lollipop on my Nexus 4 and can't see "Trusted Places". I use "Trusted Face" which works pretty well, but I would like to use "Trusted Places" at work. However, it is not there.

I have rebooted, but it is still not there. I have looked for the Google Play Services. I cannot find it under Apps, but Google Play says I have it installed.

Can anyone help me?

Answer

From an article on Android Police,

If you're on a Lollipop device and aren't seeing this yet, you can manually install the –438* build of Play Services 6.5 from APKMirror.

(Emphasis mine)

* The -438 build is for Nexus 5 on Lollipop.

The new "Trusted places" feature is available starting from Google Play services 6.5.85. You might want to check the version of your Google Play services:

  1. Go to Settings - Apps

  2. Go to "All" tabs

  3. Find and select "Google Play service"

  4. Check the version under the app name above.

As of 2014-11-22, Google has updated their Play services for Nexus 4 on Lollipop. You can either wait until Google push the update automatically, or sideload (install) it manually from APKMirror (version 6.5.87 (1599771-436)).

applications - "Weather is running" notification

Running 8.1.0 on a Moto x4: I keep getting this notification:

Weather is running

Tap for more information or to stop the app.

Weather is running notification

If I tap and Force Stop the Weather app, it comes back before long.

  1. How can I really keep the Weather app from running in the background?

  2. Or, if I want it to run in the background, how can I prevent this notification from constantly appearing?

What can cause "Android OS" process to use high percentage of battery?

I've read a bunch of forum posts about the Android OS battery drain bug. This is where the 'Android OS' process is showing large percentages in the battery statistics.

For me, I'm running 2.3 Gingerbread. I don't use bluetooth or GPS. I'm on 2G most of the time. Some days I get 40 hours out of a battery. On these days in the battery usage settings, the 'Android OS' process uses about 3% of battery. However other days I get about 8 hours with similar use. On these days the 'Android OS' process uses about 35% of the battery. I really want to find out what causes this.

The fixes suggested so far are:

  1. Reboot (Temporary).

  2. Turn off and remove battery for a couple of minutes.

  3. Reset battery stats.

  4. Change WIFI sleep policy.

  5. Use a task manager

  6. Flash stuff to the phone.

  7. Revert to older versions of the OS (not really a fix).

Does anyone know the definitive cause of this problem and the correct fix? Or is it possible there are multiple issues that cause this so different things will work for different people?

unrooting - Is it possible to unroot a device?

Once a device has been rooted, is it possible to unroot?

I also want to keep my data, so can I unroot without wiping/re-imaging? If so, how difficult is this?

Answer

This really depends. What phone are you using and how did you root it?

For example: some phones have an easy "one click" root method to root your phone. They often have a reverse easy "one click" unroot method. An example of this is EasyRoot for Droid.

As for doing it via a factory reset, that's not necessarily enough. Factory resets usually (always?) wipe only the user partitions such as /data without touching the system partition, where su and other evidence of rooting is likely to remain. Re-flashing the ROM should be enough though, although some devices have flash counters that may also be checked if you send in your phone for warranty purposes.

security - Can Applications With Root Access Modify Their Own Permissions?

For rooted phones, there are several apps which require root privileges. Knowing this, the user does allow the app to get root. Now, the app would have been installed with a set of x permissions, say INTERNET, LOCATION. Now, on gaining root, is it possible for the app to secretly (or not) give itself extra permissions eg. BLUETOOTH ? I read somewhere that the Apps requiring INTERNET or BLUETOOTH permissions are added to a user group which has access to these device files. So, can a rooted app associate itself to that group and gain the permission ?

Answer

Yes, all rooted apps theoretically can use the entire system, including all facilities that otherwise need app permissions. They could also modify the permissions database "under the radar" to grant its non-root part more permissions than were requested at install time.

You have to trust root-using apps not to violate their given permissions.

5.0 lollipop - Is it possible to install Stock Android?

I have a Lenovo K3 Note and it comes with Android Lollipop with some custom skin and apps from Lenovo. The problem is, in spite of having a decent hardware, the phone lags too much.

I was wondering if installing Stock Android would somehow make it better. So can I get stock Android image and can I format my phone with it?

Answer

This page has a list of custom ROMS (some based on the stock ROM) for your phone. Since each phone has a different hardware configuration, stock Android has to be modified to suit each phone's requirements. So Google's ROM will not work directly on your device; someone will have had to mod it themselves, and such ROMs may have other issues. Some custom ROMs have been tweaked to have even better performance than stock Android, so keep that in mind.

If you want to minimize the chances of having other problems (connectivity issues, battery issues et cetera) on your phone, your best choice is to research more on each ROM, and flash one made by an experienced dev.

You can Google the ROM + your phone name and find out more about each ROM and how well it works on your phone. Please note that stock ROM, refers to the ROM your phone came with, and not Stock Android.

If you don't find any stock ROMs to your liking, consider flashing a well known ROM, like CyanogenMod on your phone.

Here is a tutorial on flashing CyanogenMod on your phone. Read the video description first to install the ClockWorkMod ROM manager first.

Flashing any ROM on your phone voids your warranty, and may cause your phone to have more problems than you did on your phone's original ROM. Keep that in mind before you do any of this.

Backup SIM message and contact without transfer to phone

Is it possible to backup the message (e.g. SMS) and contacts inside my SIM card to my external SD Card without transferring them into my Android phone?

Answer

That should be possible. There are plenty of backup apps available on Google Play which allow local backups, such as SMS Backup & Restore or SMS Backup. For contacts, there's e.g. Contacts Backup, and for both together Super Backup : SMS & Contacts. They all store the backed-up data e.g. on your SDCard.

Though I found no explicit mention of SIM messages, I'd assume they are covered – but you might wish to check for yourself to make sure.

Update: As it turned out, above apps do not seem to cover SIM storage. But I've just stumbled upon Backup2CSV, which explicitly lists to Export contact directories (SIM CARD and phone) (it also lists Export text messages (SMS), but does not explicitly mention the SIM card in that context).

5.1 lollipop - How do I exclude a subfolder in DCIM from Google Photos backup?

I set Google Photos to automatically back up pictures and videos I take and nothing else. I use an Xperia phone and it comes with a feature to take "Time Shift" photo which is essentially just a series of rapidly taken pictures. It's stored under the "XPERIA" folder inside "DCIM". The problem is it doesn't show up in the setting to exclude folders. And it also gets uploaded to Google Photos, so I'm often flooded with pictures (remember, it's multiple rapidly taken photos) that I don't really need backed up. I can't move the folder either as it is hard coded into the Xperia's system.

htc desire - Italian Froyo not show Month Name

After update my HTC Desire to last Froyo Update, I can't see anymore Month Name or Day Of Week name.
Instead of January I see 1 and instead of Wednesday I see 2.
This happens in all my App (even Facebook).
How can I restore the names?
Do I have to root it?

My HTC language system is Italian.

Answer

This is a known "bug" with Android (it is probably intended behavior). The language, locale, and related settings are all linked and cannot be changed independently. Google apparently decided that people who read Italian want to see numbers for dates. I don't believe this was changed in 2.3-gingerbread so I guess there is no fix yet :(

rom flashing - Why isn't Clockworkmod Recovery "Sticking"?

I've tried multiple times to flash ClockworkMod recovery onto my unlocked Galaxy Nexus (LTE\CDMA variant "toro" build) device. Each time I can boot into recovery and ClockworkMod displays. However, if I completely reboot my device (boot into Android and then reboot), when I try to run recovery, my phone shows an android with a red exclamation point and refuses to boot. I've tried flashing from both Linux with the fastboot tool as well on the device itself with ROM Manager. ROM Manager reports that ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 is flashed.

What am I doing wrong?

Answer

I had the same problem and I found the solution is to rename a file in the system folder:

  • remount /system in read/write mode (use something like the Root Explorer app or ES File Explorer; both have root modes (check the app's settings) for remounting /system as writable)

  • rename the /system/recovery-from-boot.p to /system/recovery-from-boot.p-bak

(note: you could delete it, but renaming is much safer since its easily reversible)

you could also do this manually in an adb shell or on-phone Terminal session:

  • mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p-bak

  • after you've renamed the file, you might have to re-flash your CWM if it had been missing previously

google play store - How to change country?

I want to install this application

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scoompa.callrecorder.open

but I can't, because I'm in a wrong country. I would like to change country. Do I need to travel to another country to install this application or can I somehow pick a right country ? what is the right country for this application?

Answer

To answer your question, see this previous question for options on changing the country that the Market think your phone is in: How can I circumvent regional restrictions in the Android Market?

For the second part of your question about which country to change to, from the app's description:

Currently for U.S. and Canada based phones only.

But from this description:

  • The application dials to our service, which dials to the other party, showing your phone number as the caller ID.

  • The service then records the call at the telephony level, and sends a very high-quality recording straight to your email box.

I think that even if you get it to install, it will only work properly if you are currently in the US or Canada, as it seems to work by redirecting your call through a landline call forwarding service, which either won't work in other countries, or will be using a hideously expensive international rate call for that purpose.

Is it possible to stop notifications of an OTA update?

I rooted and modded my Samsung Prevail (Gingerbread) a couple weeks ago, and all is going well there.

However, I am now getting notices about an OTA system update, which I have no intention of installing. I will wait for the makers of my mod to produce a parallel version.

In the meantime, is there any way to kill the constant notices about the update?

Unwanted folders showing up in Gallery. Can they be removed?

I'm enjoying Bejeweled 2, but don't want the 'backdrops', 'fonts', and multiple 'images*' folders in the Gallery. They're a pain to wade through when I'm trying to see my own pics. Is there any way to remove them?

I've Googled a bit, but have only found other people complaining about the issue--no real solutions.

Answer

Yes you can! In directories that you do not want scanned by the media scanner put a blank file called .nomedia

Don't forget the "."

Windows may not let you create this file because of the name.

Some file explorer apps have an option for creating this file.

The app developers should have created this file for you but some forget.

When will my tablet get the Android 3.x update (Honeycomb)?

Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) was released in February 2011, however not all of the devices that will get this update have received it yet. Each manufacturer and carrier needs to add their custom modifications before it can be officially released. Versions 3.1 and 3.2 have also been released.

This community wiki will list all of the known and rumored dates for devices. If you have an update make sure to follow the format that's been established, and the following guidelines:

  1. Keep phones in alphabetical order listing the manufacturer and model

  2. Specify if the date is confirmed or rumored and link to the source

  3. If there is an unofficial release, link to the site where it can be downloaded

If you don't have a high enough reputation score to edit the wiki (currently 100), leave your suggestion in a comment or answer and someone will update the list.

cyanogenmod - Google Services battery usage

I recently updated to the 10.1 M snapshot of CyanogenMod for my Sprint Galaxy S3 (d2spr). Ever since I did the update, I have been seeing crazy high battery usage from Google Services. I have tried just about everything I can think of to shut it off, but nothing seems to be working. I'm connected to Wi-Fi most of the day, so I don't think 3G has anything to do with it.

Attempted Troubleshooting:

  1. Turn off Google Account Sync (per this question)

  2. Turn off Google Now

  3. Turn off Location reporting

If possible, I'd like to fix this without using Juice Defender or any other battery management apps, but if that's what it takes, so be it.

So how can I get Google Services to stop sucking the life out of my phone?

Google Services - 37% Google Services detail - keep awake 2 hours

Answer

This is most likely some app utilizing Google Services. You don't show the details screen to be reached when tapping the graph on top of your first screenshot. Please check there, and cross-check with How to deal with (orphaned) WakeLocks? -- the "keep awake" of your second screenshot suggest Wakelocks as the "source of evil". The part What if it is the Android System itself? should help you track the issue down further.

Another possible -- no, very likely candidate is found in another question I just stumbled upon: Google Services is killing my battery by keeping phone awake. Sound familiar? ;)

4.2 jelly bean - Android automatically corrects my volume

I have a bit annoying problem. My Android 4.2 Jelly Bean automatically corrects volume down every few minutes. It is rather annoying than a problem.

I tried to find and switch off this functionality, but i was not successful.

Can somebody help me where i can find it and switch it off?

Tablet is not rooted. This occure when I listen Google Play, when I am not listening to music, when i have switched on or off Google Play. It happenes about every 10 minutes or something like that. It happens when plugged headphones via connector or without it. Bluetooth not tested.

Thanks.

factory reset - On system restore, will I lose my software updates?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and have it updated to 4.1.2 from ICS. If I restore my phone to factory settings (either by going to settings or by rooting), will I lose my updates? If so, is there any other way to restore without having the above setbacks?

Answer

Yes, you'll lose your updates, along with any other installed app that didn't come with stock. But you will be able to re-update the apps via Google Play, and you won't lose any purchases you made (they are stored forever on the Google cloud).

I'm not sure why you're concerned about it, though. I can understand not wanting to lose your settings and data, but the only downside to losing app updates is the time and bandwidth required to re-update them afterwards.

Edit: You are probably asking about OS updates. Your phone does not keep an original OS image. Thus, once you update your OS (either by OTA updates or by installing a custom Rom), you will not be able to revert to the older Android version. Doing a factory reset should just reset the phone to a clean slate of the current Android version.

samsung galaxy nexus - Recover Google account password without unlinking/deleting the main account from android device

I forgot the password for my Google account and I want to recover it. This Google account happens to be the main Google account linked to my Android device.

When I try to use the Recovery options:

  • A password reset link can only be sent if you haven't signed in for 4 days.

  • Your security question can only be answered if you haven't signed in for 5 days.

  • A third option where "I no longer have access to those above", it implies a very long password recovery process and MAY get the password again.

If I don't unlink this Google account from Android device, the device will continue to sign in to Google services. So, recovery options can't be used.

I don't want to reset my phone to unlink/delete the main Google account, wait 4-5 days and then get the password. This means I can't use my phone for this amount of time and may lose data.

How to get it without unlinking or deleting the Google account of my Google Nexus with Android 4.2.1 (Jelly Bean)?

Answer

I am able to receive reset links despite having logged in today, yesterday and pretty much every day. However you should be able to access your account on your phone (as it will use your login details to sign in to chrome) then use that to add your phone number to your account. Then pick reset my password with my phone which will send an SMS to your phone.

backup - Cloning an application with its full data store between devices

Given a generic application I would like to transfer it, full with its own data, to another device or to the emulator.

After restoring the application and its /data/data/com.app directory it should be supposed to work as normal, provided that its business logic doesn't take into account that the device ID has changed or other facilities (like accounts) are missing.

Copying /data/data/com.app brutally may result in data corruption when app is active.

How do I do that, with or without root?

Answer

Solution one: TitaniumBackup

Both devices must be rooted and use TitaniumBackup application. I have found that Titanium doesn't start on Emulator 2.1

Solution two: use adb backup options

Use adb backup and adb restore properly. This would mean to restrict the backup to the single app to be cloned, including its data, but nothing else. This is important as adb restore is an all-or-nothing, no selective restore possible. Full syntax for adb backup is:

adb backup [-f ] [-apk|-noapk] [-shared|-noshared] [-all] [-system|nosystem] []

So to only have our "Foobar" app included, we need to connect the device and:

adb backup -f MyBackup.ab -apk com.foobar.app

This done, and adb connected to the emulator, the generated backup file MyBackup.ab then can be restored using

adb restore MyBackup.ab

Android Lollipop's notification bar is not transparent in Nexus 4

I had updated my Nexus 4 with Android 5.0 OTA update last week. I observed that the notification bar is not transparent. I see some reviews of Android Lollipop (Nexus 4) in YouTube and as I remembered correctly the notification bar was transparent. Is anybody having the same issue?

Answer

Compared to Nexus 5, Lollipop stock launcher on Nexus 4 doesn't have transparency on the notification bar.

Instead, the one with transparency is Google Now Launcher (originally known as Google Experience Launcher). After installing the launcher, you can switch between those two from Settings > Home.

ADB backup is not working

I just tried to make a backup from my Nexus 5 (before installing CM 11) It is unlocked but not rooted. On PC side I'm working with Ubuntu 13.10.

When I type

adb backup –all -apk -nosystem –f /data/Nexus5Backup/backup_17042014.abk

then my phone asks me if I want to backup and I confirm. But the terminal in Ubuntu immediately returns to prompt (~$) and my phone says the backup is complete.

When I type

adb backup –all -apk -shared -nosystem –f /data/Nexus5Backup/backup_17042014.abk

and also confirm that I want to backup then the terminal hangs at

Now unlock your device and confirm the backup operation.

The phone is displaying "shared storage".

But the weirdest thing is that in both cases the backup file (/data/Nexus5Backup/backup_17042014.abk) is never being generated.

How can I do a full backup? I already did backups in the past and they worked. Is this a bug in my Android version (4.4.2 KitKat)? And is there a workaround?

Answer

I asked this question some time ago and as I weren't able to fix it, I simply forgot about it. However as adb backup seems to work again for me and because it may be an issue for others I'll post here, what has changed since last time.

Actually an update fixed that issue. So I guess it was a bug. I can't determine which version it was but everything works fine at least since the versions of Ubuntu and adb you can see below. If the tip of matt wilkie doesn't work out for you and if you are using an older version of Ubuntu and/or adb I strongly recommend an update.

$ adb version
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.31
$ lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

Can I Delete a WhatsApp Message After 7 Min. Deadline?

So I know that if I send a WhatsApp message to someone, I can delete the message on the recipients phone within 7 minutes, using the new "delete for everyone" option in WhatsApp.

Is there a way to get passed this limit, and delete the message a few hours or days later?

Answer

Yes, there is a simple way to trick WhatsApp into thinking that 7 min. haven't passed yet.

This would involve A few simple steps. (Note: this will only work within 5 days of sending the message)

  1. disconnect WhatsApp from internet connection. You can do that by going into airplane mode, or disconnecting from mobile data and WiFi.

  2. Change the date of your phone. in settings -> date and time turn off "automatic date and time" and change the date to within 7 min. of sending the message or even before that. (If you sent a message on nov. 20 at 7:30, then just change the date on your phone, to nov. 19)

  3. Force stop the WhatsApp app. Go to settings>apps>WhatsApp>force stop.

  4. delete the message. Open WhatsApp and find the message that you want to delete, long press on it and now the "delete for everyone" option will appear, press on it.

  5. Change the date back to normal

  6. Turn off airplane mode or enable data/WiFi

As soon as WhatsApp gets network connection, the message will be deleted on the recipients phone. But you will not get any notification that it was deleted.

If for whatever reason there is a red exclamation mark next to the message, make sure you changed the time, and then press on the exclamation mark and press "resend message" that will delete for the recipient.

applications - Prevent USB data transfer (when phone is in use) and being charged

I would like to know how to protect my data when I use public battery charger in public places. I know that if I do not unlock my screen when charging, my data is safe, but what if I would like to use my phone while connected to public charger?

I would like to know how or if it requires to have an app that can help me block data transfer via USB , even if I am using the phone.

Why is the NFC in the Galaxy Nexus battery?

Why is the NFC in the Galaxy Nexus embedded in the battery?

Wouldn't it make more sense to separate the two things? Is there any hardware advantage of being this way?

Disadvantages I can see several, like replacing the battery with another, without NFC...

Answer

The NFC feature does not sit in the battery, only the antenna does.

NFC consists of:

  • an integrated chip (soldered onto the logic board)

  • an NFC Antenna that needs free view to the phone's back side
(antenna signals from the sticker on the back of the battery only need to pass the back cover)

If you look at the antenna you'll notice how big it is. It's basically just a coil with 4 windings, see ifixit's teardown. NFC allows for passive devices (Credit cards and such) which need to be fed energy from an active device through the antenna. Some engineer decided its best fit would be as a sticker on the battery.

There's only 2 positions where you can place it:

  • Back of the battery

  • Inner side of the battery cover (like with the Nexus S)

My guess is this: By placing it on the battery, the expensive and big 2-point connector (as with the Nexus S) could be merged together with the battery contacts to make it cheaper (and/or maybe more robust).

4.3 jelly bean - Where is the current_now measurement generated

If you go into the adb shell, you can check what the amount of current the battery is discharging by using the following command

cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_now

When the current is discharged it shows it as a negative value. I am wondering where in the kernel this current_now file is generated. I am using a nexus 7(flo) and I am using 4.3 jelly bean.

An app I am using (trepn) doesn't like negative measurements. So it shows current values as 0. I am trying to find where the current now file is generated and replace the sign

Someone told me that he has opened a phone only 4 days ago, but by the look of it, it is not less than a month.

When trying to buy a used phone, is there any way to check how long this phone is in use? Or the date when this phone is turned on the first time? Or the time of unboxing? Or the time of the first usage?

Is there any way I can filter those results out?

htc droid incredible - Is it possible to only silence certain notifications?

I'm running Android 2.2 FroYo on an HTC Droid Incredible. When I go to bed, I want to turn off all notifications except for incoming phone calls, which I still want to receive. Is this possible, either natively or through an application?

Answer

I asked this question to a friend and he suggested the AudioManager Widget. It allows you to control volumes for Alarm, Media, Alerts, Ringer, System, and Voice Calls independently. It also allows you to toggle vibrate for alerts and ringer independently. So far, it seems to be a solid app.

motorola droid - Factory reset to restore performance? What are the disadvantages?

tl;dr: What bad things will happen if I do a factory reset?

So I've had this original Droid for about a year and a half. I love this phone, and if only I could get it to be a bit faster and have a little more internal memory I'd keep it forever. However, it had been around for quite a while before I jumped on the Android bandwagon and it's getting pretty creaky in the joints. Further, my contract isn't up until next April.

Over that time I have installed and uninstalled a lot of applications (often to answer questions here or, more likely, from recommendations here). I have tried no fewer than five different home screen launcher apps.

I have streamlined the apps I'm using and moved everything possible to the SD card. Still, performance just isn't that good. I don't want to root (although I've considered it), but I need this thing to carry me for eight more months.

Could a factory reset possibly help? What is the downside to doing a factory reset?

I'm not concerned with losing anything important. Between the Market and AppBrain I have no fear that I won't be able to get key apps back. I also have all of my important data syncing to the cloud so I've no worries there.

Is there anything lost that I can't recover myself? For instance, am I going to have to go back to the Verizon store and have them reprogram my phone number? Is there any reason I shouldn't just go ahead and to the reset?

Update: So I took the plunge yesterday and everything worked out fine. I use Google 2-factor authentication, and that complicated things a little bit. Once I got past that it has been fine. I have quickly the discovered the apps I really need, and have been enjoying much "snappier" performance.

I'm just sorry that I can't accept multiple answers. These have all been very helpful.

Answer

You'll be in the clear for the most part. I factory reset my Moto DROID v1 a few months back, and while it is a little scary to do a total wipe like that, you really have very little to lose. Like you say, you'll be able to redownload any app that you have previously purchased, and your contacts / e-mail should sync back up just fine. It is a little frightening to see the commissioning screen on first boot, but you'll get past that quickly. Like you, I had tried clearing out as much as I could and getting "lean", but I still saw a big performance boost after resetting.

One thing you will want to be certain to do is save any text or MMS messages that you have received to your SD card. These get stored in system memory by default and will be erased if you don't save them to the SD card first. You can save an image attached to a text by long pressing the image. You'll get a pop-up with the option to save it to your SD card.

When will my device get the Android 8.0 update (Oreo)?

Android Oreo was officially released on August 21, 2017. It adds features such as picture-in-picture and AutoFill.

You can review the high-level changes at the Android developer website.

Of course, not all devices will get this update right away, even at release; others won't get it at all. Manufacturers and carriers often choose to add their own custom modifications, which tend to delay the official release.

When will each device get Oreo, either officially or unofficially, if ever?

installation - Installing .apk as system app directly (with root)

I'm wondering is it possible to install .apk file as system app directly (with root)? Without converting user app to system app.

Answer

You can simply copy the apk (its name not relevant) into /system/app or /system/priv-app, set the appropriate permissions (rw-r-r, root:root) and then do a reboot. That's it.

Works well on Android 6.0.1.

How to set one Ringtone for Contacts and another for non contacts?

Is there an Android App that can perform one ring for anyone in my Contacts and another ring for anyone not in my Contacts?

I know how to go in and set individual ringtones, but I have 350 contacts.

Actually, all I would need is an App that sets a ringtone for any number that is not in my Contacts list.

If not, would that be difficult to create?

Answer

Automation is the preferred option. Many apps are available. I prefer using MacroDroid , since it is free (upto 5 macros) and easy to learn. To understand how MacroDroid works and required settings, my answer here

Your macro would look like this

  • Macro : Ringtone for non contacts (name of macro )

Trigger: Call IncomingSelect ContactNon Contact

Action: Ringtone Configure → Select from drop down

Constraints: None ( Macro runs always )

screen - Do bright wallpapers spend more battery than dark ones?

I started wondering about this when I realized most websites I visit have white backgrounds, and I know that the screen is usually responsible for most of the battery usage. Since I can't change the background in those sites, I might at least switch my wallpaper to a black one.

Most (all?) phones need back-lighting to brighten the screen when needed. Since that back-lighting consumes battery, is it correct to state that a white screen consumes energy at a faster rate than a black one? (assuming the same brightness level in the settings)

I'm assuming that a white screen needs stronger back-lighting, but I don't know if it's the case.

4.0 ice cream sandwich - Change WCDMA to GSM automatically

I have Samsung Galaxy S II with Android 4.

If I configure my phone to GSM/WCDMA (automatic) mode, I have problems when I receive or make a call. Usually I lost the call or the other person cannot hear me.

In my city 3G network is not very good.

I solve this problem changing the mode to GSM only (manually) and then make the call.

Is there a way to configure my phone to change from WCDMA to GSM automatically when I make or receive a call?

I've installed 2G/3G OFF application, but it is still manual.

Answer

If you constantly get a poor 3G signal, you may want to switch the signal preference to favor 2G instead of 3G. Here's a way to do it on ICS:

  1. In dialer, press *#*#4636#*#*

  2. Go to 'Phone Information'

  3. Swipe to this 'Set preferred network type'

  4. Assuming it is 'WCDMA preferred', change it to 'GSM Auto (PRL)'

Screenshot
Screenshot (click to enlarge)

This setting will change its signal quality threshold, allowing it to switch from 3G to 2G 'earlier'. Use at your own risk though...

To address your question of automatically switching signal when you make a call, you might be able to hammer something out on Tasker if you are so inclined (I may give it a try later to satisfy my own curiosity xD).

One problem is forsee though, is that I believe it takes a bit of time to switch signals, so it might affect your call (or its quality).

4.0 ice cream sandwich - What exactly is framework-res.apk

As far as I understand it, it is a big system file that apparently controls a big part of the phone. I am interested because I wanted to do some themeing and so far I had edited SystemUI.apk, but if I ever ran into any problems (and being a beginner that was bound to happen) nothing seemed to happen other than the fact that I lost my notification bar.

Problem is, I have heard of some people who touched framework-res.apk and they wound up not being able to even boot their phone. I decided before carelessly poking around with something that could potentially soft brick my phone, I would like to learn a bit more about it.

So what exactly is framework-res.apk? What is it used for? What does it control? Where do we visually see its use? What could potentially happen to my phone should something go amiss with framework-res? Anything else I should know before poking my nose where it shouldn't be?

I cannot connect my Moto X to Windows 7, 32-bit PC via USB. After doing some research normal solutions people found were

  1. Enabling MTP in connection settings.

  2. Disabling USB debugging in Dev. settings.

  3. Updating drivers.

  4. Updating windows media player.

I've tried all of this still my PC can't detect Moto X as USB storage device. It shows the device in - Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers, but says this device does not work properly as Windows cannot load its drivers. It gives option to re install drivers in troubleshooting but everytime I do it the device driver is not successfully installed.

data monitoring - Can my phone be monitored by my family members without them ever accessing it?

It is actually for a friend, so less info. But she suspects that one of her family members know what she is watching on youtube and maybe also about Whatsapp messages. Do you think that is possible? The family member has is in a foreign country and has never accessed her phone. And she has not installed any apps that the family member has sent. What do you think?

Answer

Only if they have the password to her Google Account or her device is set in the Family Friendly mode (which I find very difficult to happen, otherwise she wouldn't be able to use WhatsApp), tell her to try changing her Google Account password, also, she can install Kaspersky Internet Security (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kms.free) to check if her device contains any Spyware or related software. I hope this helps her, if you have any doubts or want further information please let me know by commenting.

external sd - How does Samsung implement SD card encryption?

My android device just stopped working. I still have my SD card, but all data in it is encrypted. Encryption has been performed at file level, so I have the directory structure and filenames in plain text, but file contents are encrypted.

Does anyone know if I can recover my data without the original device, using openssl or a similar program?

cyanogenmod - Test wired headset detection via software

Since I still don't know whether my problem (call audio doesn't work without headset or speakerphone) is caused by faulty hardware or by software, I'd like to know the following:

Is there a way to tell if the headset switch in the headset jack (which tells the phone app whether a wired headset is connected or not) is working as expected?

I am looking for a solution that doesn't require disassembling the phone before knowing what is actually causing the aforementioned problem. The following idea comes to mind:

Is there a way to display/query/dump the status of the headset detection via ? Maybe something under /dev?

Or are there other ways to tell if Android thinks a wired headphone is currently connected?

By the way, I am running Cyanogenmod version 11-20141112-SNAPSHOT if that makes any difference.

UPDATE

I noticed that stock Android seems to have a "headset icon" to indicate that a headset is connected, but apparently Cyanogenmod doesn't have this (or I accidentally disabled it somehow).

security - Is there a way to block permissions for other applications on Jelly Bean?

I use LBE Privacy Guard with great pleasure to grant and withdraw permissions to access my contacts, the internet, etc. for each individual application installed in Ice-Cream Sandwich on my Galaxy Nexus. However, it is not compatible with Jelly Bean yet (causes rebooting cycle without fixing, and even then it can only block network access). Considering that the last update was in March of this year, this may take a while.

Is there another application that can do this and that is compatible with Jelly Bean? Applications like Droidwall and Permission Denied and others also don't seem to work on JB. This question asks a similar question, but that was a year ago, and I believe none of those application works on Jelly Bean.

Answer

As the "What's New" section says it's been updated for Jelly Bean, this looks promising:

I've never tried it, but assuming you're rooted, this guy's apps are usually good.

My Google Voice services keeps getting stuck on “restarting”

The "UpdateService" for Google Voice constantly keeps getting stuck on "restarting" and therefore I miss out on receiving SMS messages from Google Voice. I've already been trimming down on some unnecessary services and it doesn't seem like it has helped a whole lot. Any other suggestions or thoughts about this problem?

I'm currently running CM6, but it happened before on stock too.

Answer

I haven't seen this particular issue before, but Kevin Purdy's "Holy Trinity" of steps to take with apps that just aren't working properly is:

From Settings | Applications | Manage applications |

  • Force stop

if that doesn't help

  • Clear cache

if that doesn't help

  • Clear data

and if that still doesn't help, try the nuclear option:

  • uninstall and re-install

2.2 froyo - Can't install Google Play Services

I just upgraded Google+ to 3.6.0.44338848 (released late March 2012) and now it won't launch. It says:

This app won't run without Google Play services, which are missing from your phone.

If I tap "Get Google Play services" I'm brought to Google Play where I tap "install" and "accept and download" but then I get "Error: No connection."

(I do have a connection. I can browse the web just fine.)

Now, I should mention that Market/Play has been odd the whole time, I've had this phone, a T-Mobile myTouch 4G running Android 2.2.1. Whenever I want to install an app, I have to go into Applications, tap Google Play Store, and tap "Uninstall updates" to restore the Market app. Then I can install applications. Over time, some process upgrades Market to Google Play but I can't install applications until I downgrade to Market to avoid the "Error: no connection" message. The processes is frustrating. On my old LG phone (also running 2.2 Google Play worked just fine).

I'm been putting up with all this downgrading because it's not often I install apps and usually there's no problem after installing or upgrading an app.

But now the Google+ app is unusable so I'm motivated to do something about the "No connection" problem.

I've read through posts such as http://www.teamandroid.com/2013/01/14/fix-google-play-store-no-connection-retry-error-message/ and Google's help page at How to access the Google Play Store app - Google Play Help but I'm stuck. Please help.

Answer

I was able to install Google Play Services by browsing to its page at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms and then logging in, clicking install, and choosing my phone.

Come to think of it, I might start installing more apps this way, from the comfort of a desktop browser. :)

Anyway, I'm able to use the Google+ app again.

I'm still puzzled by the "No connection" business and having to periodically downgrade Play to Market to install anything from my phone running Android 2.2, but I'm glad I didn't have to root it and install CyanogenMod as suggested by some friends.

What am I doing wrong? Do these errors mean that I am trying to flash the wrong firmware?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Can I mark sms as read in the notification menu?

When get an incoming sms and view it in the notification menu (swiping down from the top of the screen) I can sometimes read the entire message there and I don't need to reply to it. Is it possible to mark it as read there and then? The two options I have right now is "reply" and "call".

music player - Corrupt album art

One of my albums has a corrupt album art and I can do nothing to fix it. The cover is stored as a file named folder.jpg in the audio files' folder. The picture looks fine when I open it with any picture viewer on my computer. But on my Android device it looks like a plain gray box with only a small part of the upper-left corner showing the actual picture.

I've deleted this picture and replaced it with a higher res one I found on the Internet (totally different source). The album art is still corrupt. I've deleted the album (audio + jpg files), rebooted the device, and copied it back. The album art is still corrupt. I've deleted any embedded album art in the MP3 files' tags using foobar2000 and MP3Tag. The album art is still corrupt. I've cleared the data of the "Media storage" app and rebooted the device. The album art is still corrupt. I don't know what I still can do.

The audio playing apps I've been using include Winamp, Songbird, Google Play Music and Shuttle Music Player. Each of them showed the corrupt album art the same way.

I'm using Android ICS on an HTC One V.

settings - Is it possible to force enable the battery saver mode in Android Lollipop?

It is possible to automatically enable battery saver mode in Android 5.0 when the battery hits 5 or 15%.

However sometimes it would be nice to enable this mode by hand. e.g. when the battery is still half full.

Is this possible?

Answer

Yes it's possible. You can turn on the batter saver mode anytime.

Goto Settings -> Battery -> Battery Saver -> On

You can easily turn off anytime by opening the notification and selecting

TURN OFF BATTERY SAVER option.

Does the google play store not provide updates for frozen apps?

Possible Duplicate:
Is there any other way to get updates to frozen apps?

I freeze problematic apps in hope of waiting for a better update. When frozen, the apps once did update like normally. I've turned on automatic updates in Google Play Store.

Now I've noticed that apps that are frozen does not seem to get updates.

Is this a problem with the way I freeze apps? I use Link2SD app to freeze apps.

Or is it because of the updated latest versions of Google Play Store doesn't allow updates for the frozen/disabled apps? (Google play store shows "Enable" button over the place of "open/update" for installed frozen apps.)

My Google Play Store version: 3.10.10

Why does my cell phone keep getting an error message about my password being wrong or account being changed?

I do not have Google+, I do not have 2 step verification, and I have no data to show in my data tools tab online. So, why do I keep getting an error message that my password is incorrect or my account has changed? I didn't change anything, in fact, I never use it. Have I been hacked? If so, how can I resolve this so it doesn't keep happening?

security - Are there any good firewalls available?

Does the android platform have any firewall application?

Answer

I'm pretty sure that Android includes iptables, which is the standard firewall for any Linux. What I have no information about is whether iptables is compiled into the kernel used on all phones, but you might get more information out of this thread in the xda-developers forum.
